Chapter 184: Why Are You Defending An Outsider?
Not long after, the siren from the ambulance, police car, and fire engine could be heard.
The heart-wrenching sound resounded through the entire Tomaville.
In the hospital waiting room, Janice sat on the floor in despair. Her eyes were dull as she stared at the door of the operation theatre, which was tightly shut. She had remained in that exact position without moving ever since Christopher was rushed into surgery.
Yvonne was the first to arrive in the hospital. She happened to be on night shift today so she rushed over after she heard what had happened.
She saw Janice sitting in the hallway, covered in blood. Her pristine white shirt was covered in blood. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes were red and swollen, and her eyes were empty.
It was as if she had turned into a different person.
Yvonne stopped in her tracks before she walked over and crouched in front of Janice. She called out softly, "Janice."
Janice froze in her position, as though she didn’t hear anything. She sat on the floor and was holding a case. The case was covered with blood, and one could not see its original appearance anymore. Janice was staring at the case, motionless.
It was as though she was completely unaware of whatever happened in the outside world.
Yvonne’s heart ached when she saw Janice and she didn’t know what to say to her.
The hospital was in a mess when Christopher was brought in. All the specialists had rushed over to treat him, including the retired doctors.
As a doctor, Yvonne knew how grave the situation was.
But at that very moment, she was at a loss for words.
At this moment, a rush of footsteps could be heard in the quiet hallway.
Yvonne raised her head and saw a middle-aged man with an intimidating aura. He was walking over in a hurry.
She recognized him as Nathan Bateman, the richest man in Tomaville, as he often appeared in the media and newspapers. He was Christopher’s father.
Yvonne looked at Janice worriedly when she saw Nathan. She called her softly, "Janice."
Only then did Janice returned to her senses. She latched on the wall and slowly stood up as Nathan walked over. However, as soon as she steadied herself, a slap landed heavily on the left side of her cheek.
Her head tilted to the side and she lost her balance. Her entire body was slammed
onto the wall.
"What are you doing?"
Yvonne was the first one to react. Immediately, she stood in front of Janice to protect her.
Nathan glared at the woman in front of him and snapped. "It’s none of your business. Get out of the way."
"No!" Yvonne rebuked firmly.
Nathan clenched his fists. He wasn’t someone who would use violence against women, but Yvonne was challenging his limits.
He regretted that he didn’t take care of this matter before, and now, Christopher was harmed.
Nathan was frustrated. He pushed Yvonne away and raised his hand, attempting to slap Janice again.
"Stop!"
Amelia came over right after that. With a glance, she immediately understood what had happened after she saw Nathan’s fury and the fingerprints on Janice’s cheek.
"What are you doing?"
Nathan stopped and lowered down his hand. He snorted. "How dare you ask me this when she harmed Christopher?"
"How can you hit her when we’re have yet to clarify the matter?"
"Christopher is your son! Why are you defending an outsider?!"
"If you truly considered Chris to be your son, then you wouldn’t be venting your anger on his wife now."
"You..."
Nathan was made speechless. He retreated to the side with a disdainful look.
It was only then that Amelia turned to look at Janice. She couldn’t bear to see Janice’s pitiful state anymore.
"Listen to me, Janice. Chris will be fine. Go home and take a shower. I’ll stay here with him."
...
Janice seemed to regained her senses now. She hadn’t reacted to Nathan’s slap at all a moment ago.
She shook her head frantically when she heard Amelia.
She didn’t want to leave. She wanted to stay here and be the first person to hear that Christopher was fine.
"No, I want to stay here."
As she spoke, she wrapped her arms around herself and leaned against the wall, as if she was afraid that someone would take her away. She isolated herself from the outside world.
Amelia was heartbroken when she saw Janice.
She was worried about her son, but Janice’s actions made her heart ache.
Amelia stopped persuading Janice and sighed helplessly. She turned her gaze to the operation theatre with a heavy heart.
Just like that, they waited outside the operation theatre for a long time.
The lights in the operation theatre were switched off and the door slowly opened.
Doctors in their scrubs appeared one after another in exhaustion.
Everyone rushed towards the doctors, including Janice. However, before she could move closer to them, she was stopped by Nathan.
She stood from a distance and looked at the doctors nervously.
"Doctor, how is my son?"
Amelia was the first who spoke.
A senior doctor hesitated for a moment when he heard Amelia’s question. He was leading the doctors and stood in front of them.
"We’ve rescued the patient, but he is still in a coma due to excessive blood loss." "When will he regain consciousness?" Nathan asked eagerly.
The old doctor shook his head. "That’s hard to say. It will depend on the patient himself."
"Can’t you specify when he will regain consciousness?"
Nathan continued to ask.
The old doctor recognized Nathan. He sighed and said, "The knife pierced through both lungs and it was only one centimeter away from his heart. It would be a miracle if he regains consciousness. It’s hard to say when he will be awake, as there is also a possibility that he will never regain consciousness. He’s not out of danger yet. Anything could happen."
Everyone was shocked when they heard him.
Especially Janice. She reeled in shock and almost fell to the ground. Fortunately, Yvonne was quick to catch her.
"Janice, are you alright?"
Janice didn’t reply to Yvonne. She shook her head and walked towards the old doctor wobbly.
"Doctor, I beg you, please save my husband."
She pleaded, her eyes filled with tears.
The old doctor sighed. Then he shook his head helplessly and walked away.
Janice stood there frozenly as the group of doctors left. Her eyes looked empty.
Suddenly, her vision blurred and she passed out.
"Janice..."
Janice lost consciousness after she heard someone calling out her name.
Darkness...
Unending darkness...
Janice didn’t know where she was. All she could see was complete darkness.
Her heart was beating wildly because she couldn’t see anything.
"Where is this?"
She yelled desperately.
However, no one paid any attention to her.
Just as she was in deep despair, suddenly, the sound of a wooden door opened behind her. "Creak." She was startled momentarily before turning around.
A blinding light shone on her. Subconsciously, she reached out and covered her eyes. After a while, she slowly moved her hands away until she got used to the bright lights.
She saw a tall figure. He was standing at the door and was walking towards her slowly.
...
Janice realized that the figure was Christopher as he approached her slowly.
He stood in front of her and looked at her lovingly.
"I’m leaving, Janice. You must continue to live your life and stay healthy."
After that, he reached out to hug her. Janice wanted to return his hug, but she couldn’t touch him. She wanted to say no but she realized that she couldn’t speak at all.
She could only continue to cry as she stared at his figure, moving further and further away until he gradually disappeared into the horizon.
"No!"
She yelled loudly and woke up. Brightness filled her vision the moment she opened her eyes.
"Janice, Janice!"
Someone was shouting in her ear.
Her eyes were filled with tears as she turned around and saw Yvonne’s blurry face.
"What happened, Janice? Did you have a nightmare?"
Yvonne asked worriedly.
Janice realized that it was just a dream when she saw Yvonne.
But why had the dream seemed so real?
She suddenly remembered something and immediately sat up.
"Yvonne, where’s Chris?"
She asked eagerly.
Yvonne remained silent and looked at Janice hesitantly.
Janice felt suffocated as Yvonne remained silent. She stopped asking, then she lifted the blanket and got up weakly. She did not even have time to put on her shoes before she ran out with her barefoot.
Janice was too quick. By the time Yvonne reacted, Janice had run out of the room so Yvonne chased after her hurriedly.
"Janice, listen to me."
Janice couldn’t hear Yvonne at all. Her mind was filled with Christopher and she could only run as fast as she could.
But the hospital was huge. She didn’t know where to find Christopher.
So she asked everyone she met on the way.
"Where’s my husband?"
"Do you know where my husband is?"
Everyone looked at her as though she was crazy.
"Janice, calm down."
Yvonne finally caught up with Janice.
"Yvonne, tell me, where is my husband?"
Yvonne was heartbroken when she saw Janice acting like that.
Last night, Christopher was sent to the intensive care unit after Janice had fainted.
ICU wasn’t a place that anyone could enter. Furthermore, the Batemans stood guard in front of the ward, most likely to prevent Janice from entering it.
"He’s in the ICU."
"Where is it? Take me there."
Janice pleaded.
Yvonne sighed and took her to the ICU.
There was a row of men guarding in front of the ICU.
Bodyguards in black suits stood in front of the hallway.
Janice was just about to enter before she was stopped.
She wasn’t bothered by the guards. At that moment, no one could stop her.
"Get out of the way. Let me in!"
She struggled frantically and even bit some of the guards. The guards who came to stop her were injured so they let her in.
She rushed to the entrance of the ICU.
Nathan and Amelia were standing at the door with a doctor.
No one knew what they were talking about, but both of them looked grim.
Janice walked towards them slowly. She heard the doctor, "The patient has a weak pulse and breathing rate. We’ll need someone he loves to talk to him and bring him back to life. You can discuss amongst yourselves and decide who you want to send in."
Janice immediately ran over when she heard the doctor. "Doctor, please let me in." She was tearful, barefooted, and was still wearing the hospital gown.
The doctor looked at her hesitantly.
"Who allowed you to enter? Get out! Where are the guards? Are they all dead?" Nathan didn’t expect Janice to enter the ICU, so he roared in anger.
