Chapter 185: Let Her In

Several bodyguards who were attacked by Janice covered their wounds and stepped forward, ready to drag her away.

However, Janice broke free from them. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor’s arm with all her might.

"Let me in. I’m his wife."

"Shut up! He’s in a coma all thanks to you! How dare you have the audacity to see him again? Don’t be delusional!"

Nathan tried to stop her.

Janice cried when she heard Nathan. She looked at him tearfully and pleaded. "Please, let me see him."

Her pleas were useless before Nathan.

"Don’t even think about it!" Nathan was firm.

"Please."

Janice knelt on the ground with a plop, but Nathan turned away, ignoring her.

She had no choice but to beg him pitifully.

Everyone turned to look at Janice sympathetically.

Amelia couldn’t bear to see Janice in such a pitiful state. She went forward to help Janice up and said, "Stop it, Janice. Please get up."

"Mom, I beg you, let me in."

Janice pleaded with Amelia.

Amelia was hesitating. She wanted to agree to Janice’s request, but this wasn’t something menial. She couldn’t afford to take any risks as it concerned Christopher’s life.

Just as Amelia was hesitating...

"Let her in."

A sonorous voice could be heard.

Everyone turned to look at the owner of the voice. On the other side of the hallway, Rob was pushing a wheelchair. Old Mr. Allson was sitting in the wheelchair, approaching them slowly.

Amelia quickly got up when she saw her father.

"Dad, why are you here?"

"Why can’t I be here?" Old Mr. Allson grumbled, visibly displeased. "How could you

keep this from me?"

He coughed dryly as he spoke.

Amelia’s face was full of worry. "We didn’t mean to hide it from you. Your health..."

"I’m in perfect health. I can take it."

Old Mr. Allson waved at Rob to push him towards Janice.

He stopped in front of Janice and reached out with his calloused hand.

"Get up, my dear."

Tears streamed down Janice’s face as she remained silent. She had no idea how to face Old Mr. Allson.

He didn’t insist since Janice refused to get up. He turned to Nathan and demanded, "Let her in."

Nathan was stunned.

"Dad..."

He was about to retort when Old Mr. Allson interrupted him.

"Janice is the only person who can wake Chris up. I won’t be able to do it, and neither will either of you."

Everyone fell silent at his words.

"Go in, Janice. It would depend on you whether Chris can wake up or not."

Old Mr. Allson spoke earnestly.

Tears welled up in Janice’s eyes as she nodded her head. She slowly stood up and bowed before following the doctor into the ICU.

"Dad, you’re betting on Chris’s life."

Nathan said.

"So what? Life is a gamble, after all."

Old Mr. Allson closed his eyes and stopped talking.

Nathan was extremely displeased. He wanted to say something, but he could only swallow his anger and turn away.

Janice followed the doctor into the ICU and donned the protective clothing under the doctor’s guidance. She was only allowed to enter the ICU after being disinfected a few times.

The ICU was a lowly pressurized area. It was surrounded by glass and they could see everything outside clearly. Similarly, the visitors from the outside could see everything inside the ICU too.

She noticed it when she was disinfecting herself outside before entering the ward.

She entered the ward slowly.

The ICU was filled with various medical and monitoring equipment, as well as a hospital bed.

...

Christopher was lying on the bed and attached to various monitoring equipment.

He lay there motionless as if he had fallen asleep.

The patient monitor was beeping. It was the only thing that could prove that he was still alive.

Slowly, she walked towards him. She stood in front of his bed and stared at his face.

Under the transparent oxygen face mask, his face was abnormally pale.

The doctor had mentioned before that it was caused by excessive blood loss.

She had never known that a person could lose so much blood. Her memories of that day were stained with blood.

Even now, she still remembered the scene where he was covered in blood. That was the scene she would never wish to recall again in her life.

She was taken aback when she saw Christopher lying on the bed, looking as pale as a paper. She didn’t know what to say to him.

But she knew that this was her last chance to wake him up. She could not give up just like that.

She raised her head, attempting to stop her tears. Then, she slowly sat down by the bed when she calmed down.

She sat there and instinctively reached out to hold his hand.

She could still clearly feel his cold hands even though she wore rubber gloves.

The cold was bone-chilling.

"Chris, are you cold?"

As she spoke, she wrapped her hands around his hand and rubbed it.

She recalled that his body temperature was always warm every time he got close to her. She would never expect that he would be so cold to touch one day.

However, she wasn’t afraid. She could use her body to warm him up even though he was cold.

Gently, she lifted his hand and placed it on her chest.

She stroked his cheek with the other hand. Even though most of his face was covered by the oxygen face mask, she still couldn’t help but to shiver when she touched him.

That sensation instantly crushed her all efforts to mentally prepare herself before entering the ward.

She couldn’t help but cry uncontrollably at his hapless state.

She recalled the doctor’s instructions before entering the ward so she quickly retracted her hand. She wiped it clean and then turned around to look at the timer outside the glass door. She slowly withdrew from him.

"Chris, do you remember that day when you took me to the seaside to see the sunrise? You asked me what wishes I made to Polaris."

As she spoke, she exhaled deeply and continued.

"Actually, I had made several wishes that day. I wanted to be a stronger person. That way, I could be by your side so I wished for strength."

"I also wished for wisdom. You’re right, I’m not smart enough. I often do stupid things to slow you down, so I want to be smart enough to match your wits."

At that point, she couldn’t help but laugh at herself and continued.

"I also wished for courage. That is what I lack the most."

She lowered her head to calm herself down and whispered, "Do you still remember? I wanted a divorce after I discovered your real identity. Actually, the reason why I wanted a divorce wasn’t because you lied to me, but it was because you were such an amazing person. After all, I was just an ordinary girl, how could I deserve such a wonderful person like you?"

She twitched her nose and tears fell from her cheeks. But soon, she smiled and said.

"Fortunately, you didn’t give up on us. You held onto me and wouldn’t let go. That’s the only reason why I managed to persevere till now."

...

She smiled. Her smile was hauntingly beautiful. That piece of memory was too absurd for her. How could she refuse Christopher back then?

"I must have been a fool then," She thought. Fortunately, he hadn’t given up on her.

She was extremely thankful that he hadn’t given up on her but her eyes gradually dimmed as she recalled something.

"But later, I realized that I can’t depend on you alone. I have to gain enough confidence in myself.

"So that I can have the courage to be with you and grow old together."

"Yes, I want to grow old with you, no matter how difficult our journey would be."

"I knew that I was greedy. I wanted everything. I wanted love, I wanted happiness, but all I wanted the most was to be worthy of you."

"But now I know. I was too greedy. If I didn’t have so many wants back then, maybe nothing would have happened to you and you would be safe right now."

"Maybe Heavens decide to punish me. But it was my fault. Why must it be imposed upon you?"

She couldn’t but sob loudly. If it was a punishment for her greed, why the punishment wasn’t imposed on her?

"I’ve figured it out now. I don’t want anything at all. Courage, power, wisdom, love, or happiness. I just want you to wake up. I can give up everything as long as you recover."

If the Polaris could grant wishes, could Chris recover if she were to take back her greedy desires?

"I can make you delicious food and together, we can make many babies, not for grandpa or for anyone. I just want to give birth to a child for you. Chris, wake up. I promise I won’t go back on my word."

She stared at his motionless face after she finished. How great would it be if he could open his eyes and respond to her now?

However, there was still no reaction from him.

Time passed and her despair grew.

"Beep." The heartbeat monitor continued to beep at the same frequency as before.

There was no change at all.

Was she not sincere enough?

Why didn’t he respond? 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

She couldn’t continue anymore.

There was a saying that a couple could communicate with each other telepathically. Why couldn’t she do that?

Was it because they hadn’t been together long enough?

No...

No! He must have heard her. She had to wake him up.

With that in mind, she wiped her tears and said.

"I’ve always been dissatisfied with something. We’ve been married for more than three months, but you didn’t give me a wedding ring. Not only that, but you didn’t even give me a wedding. Didn’t you say that you loved me? Can you bear to leave me in regret? You can’t leave me before you grant my wishes! You must wake up. Do you understand, Chris?"

She warned him.

However, there was still no response from Christopher.

Just then, the doorbell rang. She knew that it was time for her to leave.

However, the heartbeat monitor continued to beep at the same frequency as before. Janice grew antsy and held Christopher’s hand anxiously, looking powerless. "Hurry up, what else do you want to hear from me? Hurry up, I don’t want to leave like this, do you understand?"

Tears rolled down her face as she spoke. She felt helpless and powerless, as though she was about to drown in an ocean. Gradually, she fell into a panic. Some medical staff in protective clothing stepped forward and dragged her away. She was dragged further and further away from Christopher. In a panic, she struggled and turned to look at Christopher. Finally, she shouted, "Chris, I love you! Christopher, I love you, I love you... I love you... I love you..."

She was finally being dragged out of the ward.

However, no one noticed that Christopher’s hand trembled subtly on the bed at the moment when the door of the ward was closed.
