Chapter 181: The Mermaid’s Tear
"Trash, a bunch of garbage!"
Hearing the report from the other side of the phone, Sophie couldn’t help but swearing.
They couldn’t even catch a woman, what kind of incompetent fools were they? After a series of expletives, something occurred in her mind.
"Since you failed, leave Tomaville immediately. Don’t be discovered." She quickly calmed down and explained.
Sophie hung up after giving instructions.
She was still feeling peeved/
She didn’t believe that luck would always be on Janice’s side.
"One day, she would fall into my hands." While thinking of this, Sophie narrowed her eyes fiercely.
On the other side, in an abandoned factory. "Boss, are we really going to leave like this?"
"Of course not. We haven’t received the money yet. Don’t listen to that woman. As long as we hand the female reporter to those traffickers according to her instructions, we will complete the task. Let’s go."
"Where are we going?"
"Obviously to get her, you idiot!"
The two of them walked out while cursing.
In the studio of the TV station, Janice hurriedly handed Nino to Mike.
Mike thanked her repeatedly.
"You are welcome, just go," Janice replied.
Watching Mike leave, she heaved a sigh of relief.
She remembered that her car was still parked there, so she quickly called for car towing.
When Janice was done, she returned to the studio. Nino was performing on the stage. She took a video of Nino and sent it to Christopher.
At the auction house.
Many celebrities and wealthy persons in Tomaville were gathered here.
Christopher was sitting, showing no interest in the auction items on the stage.
His only purpose here was to buy the precious sapphire, the Mermaid’s Tear.
"Mr. Bateman, we received some information. Those people have come to Tomaville."
Rob reported to Christopher right after answering a call.
"Oh?" Christopher was a little surprised. "Send someone to keep an eye on them and see who they are contacting with." He then ordered.
"Yes, Sir."
As soon as Christopher finished giving orders, his cell phone rang. He took it and found that it was a video from Janice. It was Nino doing tricks on a stage.
After watching the video, Christopher chuckled and put his phone away.
"What are you laughing at?"
Amelia suddenly sat in the empty seat next to him.
Christopher frown and asked, "Mom, Why are you here?"
"Don’t forget, your mommy is a jewelry designer. How can I miss such an occasion?" Amelia replied.
Christopher chose not to respond.
"Oh right, which one have you taken a fancy to?" Asked Amelia.
"The Mermaid’s Tear." He answered.
Amelia paused for a moment and gave him a thumbs-up.
"You have a good eye. That gem is rare and valuable." She praised.
"I didn’t choose it because of the market value," Christopher replied.
"Then why?" Amelia frowned.
She seemed to have realized something and said, "Oh, I see. Are you going to buy it for Mommy? I know you love Mommy."
Amelia spoke merrily, completely unaware of her son’s expression.
"It’s not for you."
Her smile froze instantly and talked in an envious tone. "I knew you wouldn’t be so filial to buy it to me. Is it for Janice?"
Christopher replied with silent acquiescence.
Amelia sighed and teased, "Seems like you’ve forgotten your mother after having a wife."
...
"Wait a minute, you want it too?" Christopher frowned.
"Yes, but it’s just that my son likes it. I’m willing to part with it." Amelia replied.
Soon, the Mermaid’s Tear was taken to the stage. Its starting price was $750,000.
Christopher whispered to Rob, letting him call for a price.
"$750,000."
"$800,000!" someone shouted.
"$900,000," Rob called again.
"1 million!"
"1.1 million."
Suddenly, a man’s voice was heard. "I bid 1.5 million."
The voice was a little familiar. Rob looked back and found Benjamin. He seemed to have just entered the field. He shouted the price even before sitting down.
Obviously, he had been planning to bid for it all along.
Rob became worried and looked at Christopher.
"2 million," Christopher called without an expression.
The price rose to 2 million within a matter of seconds, everyone was shocked.
Benjamin sat down and listened to the exclamations from the crowd. He curled his lips and then shouted, "2.5 million!"
Another fifty thousand dollars was added to the bid.
The other bidders reached their limits and left the competition one after another, leaving only two remaining.
"5 million!" Christopher tried to raise the bar.
The crowd boiled over at this.
However, Benjamin just calmly raised the bidding paddle.
"6 million."
The atmosphere was intense, keeping everyone’s attention glued on both bidders.
But the two of them sat there as if nothing had happened.
"Son, do you know him?" Amelia got some clues and asked in a low voice.
Christopher didn’t say anything but raised his paddle.
"I bid 10 million."
As soon as he finished his words, the audience burst into an uproar. Amelia even gave a thumbs-up to her son.
How ruthless!
Ten million for a piece of sapphire was a sky-high price.
In terms of investment value, it was impossible to recoup the money.
With such a wealthy buyer, the crowd turned their eyes to him. At the same time, their eyes fell on Benjamin too. They wanted to see if he would one-up Christopher.
Christopher also looked at him provocatively.
Their eyes met in the air.
Benjamin showed a triumphant smile. He didn’t take any action.
In the end, the decision was made on the stage, and the Mermaid’s Tear was sold to Christopher.
After the auction ended, everyone filed out.
Christopher and Amelia were the last to leave.
because of the sky-high price he bid with, the organizers stopped them for photoshoots.
Other than Amelia and Benjamin, all the seats were empty.
He sat in his seat, staring at Christopher with a self-deprecating smile on his face.
He didn’t even know what he was fighting for.
Perhaps it was just a little bit of unwillingness in his heart.
Finally, when all the people on the stage had left and only Christopher was left, he stepped forward.
"Congratulations, Mr. Bateman."
Christopher didn’t take Christopher’s compliment seriously.
He thanked him politely before he was about to leave.
"If I’m not mistaken, you’re planning to give this this to Janice." Benjamin suddenly spoke up.
Upon hearing this, Christopher stopped but didn’t respond.
Seeing his reaction, Benjamin knew that he had guessed correctly. In fact, it wasn’t difficult to guess.
Even though this gem was rare, it was far from being worth ten million dollars.
...
Christopher certainly understood this principle. He was willing to spend a huge sum of money to buy it, and it had nothing to do with business considerations.
Then there was only one possibility.
Gems are precious but love is priceless.
"Mr. Bateman, why don’t you care about your wife more? If I were you, I wouldn’t want to give her useless gifts like this. I would spend more time with her instead. What do you think?"
After saying that, without waiting for Christopher’s reply, Benjamin sneered and walked off the stage.
Christopher stood there until his figure disappeared. He muttered to himself, "What is he talking about?"
"Son, can we leave now?"
When Amelia stepped onto the stage, she saw him staring blankly in one direction.
So she waved in front of his eyes.
Only then did Christopher come to his senses. "Let’s go."
He kept the gem box in his hand and walked down the stage.
When Amelia saw that he was in a hurry, she couldn’t help but tease him. "Why are you in a hurry? Can’t wait to see your lover, huh?"
Christopher didn’t speak, he was thinking about what Benjamin had just said. Did something happen that he didn’t know?
Amelia had no clue what he was thinking. She saw Rob coming out from the other side while following Christopher. Her eyes turned slightly and she said to her son, "Lend me your assistant for a minute."
Christopher knew that his mother was referring to Rob. He nodded and walked to the car alone.
Rob was about to follow him.
Amelia stopped him. "I’ve told your boss that you’re helping me today."
Rob stopped when he heard this.
Amelia patted on his shoulder and said, "Rob, long time no see."
Rob was shocked from Amelia’s pat. He quickly bowed and called out respectfully, "Madame."
His reaction was a bit strange. Amelia frowned and corrected him. "You can stop calling me Madam. Just call me aunty from now on."
Rob opened his mouth, but no words came out.
"Erm, Chairwoman."
He could only change his form of address.
Amelia didn’t force him anymore. Rob was considered as a general manager of her jewelry brand. It was reasonable to call her by that term.
She stopped correcting him anymore.
"Take the key and bring me for a ride today."
As she spoke, she handed over her car keys and walk toward the car.
Rob received the car keys. Only then did he dare to look at Amelia’s back, a glimmer of light flashing in his eyes.
After Christopher left the auction house, he called Janice.
Although Benjamin’s words were inexplicable, he still wanted to call to confirm Janice’s safety.
"Where are you?"
Asked him as soon as the phone was connected.
Janice was standing at the door of a car shop while received the call. She replied, "Something happened to my car today. I’m at the repair store now."
"I’m on my way now. I have something for you," Christopher said.
Janice nodded. After hanging up the phone, she caressed Nino, who was in her arms, and said, "Your daddy is coming soon, be a good boy."
As she spoke, she walked in with Nino in her arms.
There were quite a few people getting their vehicles fixed here.
She didn’t know what happened today, but there seemed to be a lot of people. She glanced at the service desk and walked over. She wanted to ask when the car could be repaired, but found that there were several people in front of her.
