Chapter 164: 164-The Lycan In The Woods

Verity:

The mate ball would begin at the evening, and everyone would be dancing around till midnight.

When the full moon rose, mates would finally feel the mate bond.

I mean, those things were not for me.

After we marked our attendance, we left for our journey.

About an hour before midnight, I started to have a very bad feeling, like something was not right.

We had just driven out of the pack’s border, and immediately, it felt like something was off.

The road ahead looked abandoned, especially at night, considering it was rogue territory.

It was an avenue lined with woods on both sides.

"How long?" Ragnar asked the driver.

I turned my head toward him, then looked ahead again.

"It will take us a few more hours before we arrive at the Red Mist Pack," the driver responded.

Ragnar nodded.

He had been quite on edge throughout this trip, and I began to wonder if I liked the professional Ragnar more or this very unhinged, fidgety one.

He kept fixing his coat, stretching his neck, and cracking his knuckles.

Then he would shake his leg until midnight started to approach, and I realized why.

It hit me all at once, and I snapped my head toward him.

"Did you plan this?"

As soon as I asked him, he frowned at me. Only his eyes moved toward me.

"You know the monster attacks if somebody travels around midnight, right?" I said, disbelief evident in my tone.

"No, I did not. I did not travel just because of that," he answered, looking out the window.

"Just like you didn’t remember, I didn’t either," he said with a shrug.

Then he rested his head back, closing his eyes as if he were completely comfortable.

I stared at him in disbelief until it hit me.

He did not believe the sightings of the monster.

"Didn’t Alpha King Jaguar fight the monster too? Is it the same one?" I hissed.

I watched Ragnar’s face tighten even though he did not say a word.

He never opened his eyes, but the way his expression changed told me he was listening.

"You don’t believe it, do you?" I asked him, shocked by the fact that he probably did not even believe his own brother.

"Alpha King Ragnar, I’m speaking with you," I demanded because my heart was now thundering in my chest.

Him not believing it could cost me my life.

He had brought us down the same road where the monster had been sighted.

He slammed his hand on the seat, and my body jolted before he opened his eyes, ran his hand through his hair, and turned to me.

"What Jaguar fought was not just any monster," he hissed, making my eyes narrow at him.

"Then what was it?" I asked softly.

"It was a lycan."

My heart flipped when I heard that. It was as if finger-like creatures were crawling up and down my spine.

"So you know there is a monster, not just anything but a lycan, and yet you brought us here?" I asked in confusion.

"I didn’t. I just didn’t think it was true that it only traveled around midnight. When Jaguar was attacked, it wasn’t around midnight. So no matter what time we travel, if this thing wants to attack us, it will."

As Ragnar was explaining in a raised voice, something suddenly ran in front of our car.

It hit the front of the car so fast that we did not even have time to brace ourselves.

My body lurched toward the front seat, and I was only saved when arms wrapped around me.

I felt a force pull me back, and I landed right in Ragnar’s arms, on his lap.

By the time whatever it was had disappeared, the driver had stopped the car.

I was breathing as if I had run a mile.

However, the worst part was where I was breathing.

In the Alpha King’s fucking lap, with his arms tightly wrapped around me.

I wondered if we were going to have another awkward situation where he would have to acknowledge that pulling me back had brought our bodies into contact.

But before that could settle in, I felt a shove.

He threw me back onto my side like I was a rag doll.

My body landed on the seat while Ragnar was already ready to confront whatever was outside.

I heard him open the door, and I quickly fixed my posture, turning to him.

"No!"

As I reached my hand out, Ragnar stopped.

It happened so abruptly.

When had I ever raised my voice at Alpha King Ragnar?

And when the fuck had he actually listened?

"Don’t," I uttered.

He watched me in silence before blinking once, a gesture Ragnar never, ever made.

That was his way of telling me everything was fine, that he got it.

He stormed out of the car and slammed the door shut.

Now I was alone with the driver, who I could tell was panicking so fucking hard.

In the distance, I heard a loud screeching noise.

There it was.

The monster.

I started turning my head, looking in every direction.

Then the sound grew closer and closer until I felt the car shake again.

The monster had hit the car again.

I watched Ragnar suddenly take off his coat and throw it in the air.

From the window, I could only see a little. It was dark outside too.

Ragnar jumped to the back, making me turn my head around.

The back window of the car was tinted black, making it hard for me to see anything.

But every once in a while, the car would shake as if they were fighting.

Through the side mirrors, I caught a glimpse of it, and my skin felt like it would stretch and tear apart from the goosebumps.

Ragnar had turned into a big black wolf, fighting against the monster.

And the monster— it was the scariest-looking thing I had ever seen.

Tall, standing on its two feet, with enormous hands and visible claws.

It truly was a lycan.
