Chapter 163: 163-The Big Bad Restless Wolf.
Verity:
"Because the other packs can object," I continued.
We had been talking for the past ten minutes.
Ragnar did not seem like he had a lot of input. Or maybe he was just keeping it to himself.
I noticed he was really anxious, sweating a lot and constantly trying to reach for his shirt’s button.
But then he would stop, possibly because I was sitting right next to him and he felt it was inappropriate.
I’m just not sure what was going on with him, but all in all, he did not look very confident.
I decided to give it a rest once I noticed he was getting really annoyed.
He was getting really uncomfortable.
"I think we should talk about it in the morning."
As soon as I suggested that, I watched him tilt his head, not looking very— um, okay.
"Why? What’s wrong with doing it now?" he asked, making me gulp.
"Actually, it seems like you’re tired," I said, trying to adjust myself on the seat.
That was my way of avoiding direct eye contact with him.
"You don’t need to worry about anything. I’m fine," he muttered.
"Oh, all right then," I mumbled, frowning in confusion at what I did wrong this time.
I mean, he was quite judgmental.
I knew that much, but I had to adjust because he was my boss, and I was just a secretary.
I noticed he opened his mouth a few times, as if he wanted to say something.
Then he kept rubbing his face with his hands.
After another fifteen minutes of me yapping while he just pretended to listen, he finally let out a breath.
"You should go and sleep. You look tired," he said to me.
I was perfectly fine. If anything, it seemed like a cry for help.
I decided not to force him.
"Okay, good night," I said as I reached for my phone.
However, he suddenly leaned forward.
It wasn’t a subtle movement.
For a second, I honestly got scared until he pulled his hand back.
I guess he was trying to reach for my phone. I’m not sure what he was doing.
"Is everything okay?" I asked because Ragnar had never acted this way.
His body language wasn’t like him at all.
"I thought it was my phone," he mumbled.
Then he lifted himself from the couch just enough to check the phone in his pocket.
Then he pulled it out.
Did he think I was stealing his phone?
I’m not sure what was happening with him, but this was just not okay.
Finally, I decided to walk out.
And honestly, it had never felt so amazing.
I was able to sleep peacefully, but honestly, throughout the night, I could hear Ragnar moving around in his room.
It was pretty obvious he was going through some kind of turmoil.
Or maybe he was missing Gigi. I mean, he had done that before.
Whenever he went out with me, it seemed like he remembered Gigi even more.
Well, that night was different.
I would hear him groan and throw things around. What was going on with him?
Maybe he and Gigi had some argument.
Every time I heard his walls thundering, I would wake up.
Then, after three, everything became peaceful. I fell asleep like a baby.
I woke up for breakfast, and Ragnar seemed completely fine.
It did not seem like he had a bad night. It did not even look like he had gone through anything.
Everything was back to normal, and I assumed he just had not been feeling well the previous night.
The rest of the day was the same.
We went from one person to another, discussing with the witnesses what they had seen.
While Ragnar surveyed the area around the border, I spoke with each witness for more than an hour.
I specifically focused on what they were doing and where they were before and after the attack.
After everything was done, Ragnar and I decided to visit the other pack.
We did the same thing, rinse and repeat.
We went to the second pack and spent at least two days there.
That was the longest we had stayed anywhere.
I barely got to see Ragnar because he was mostly surveying the area and checking security, whereas I was with the witnesses.
The only times we saw each other were at lunch and dinner. Even those were brief.
This was not going as planned. I thought we would have more time to spend together.
Finally, we headed to the third pack.
I wore a simple white dress with white sandals, leaving my hair tied in a messy bun with a few strands framing my face.
The dress had net sleeves with little sparkles on them.
I chose it because I really was not feeling like dressing up in pants and everything.
The bruise on my neck had faded too, so I was pretty good to go.
Usually, I would opt for a rather scandalous dress, but this time— I don’t know.
Seeing myself in the mirror, I felt like the Verity from before, the one who liked wearing dresses.
When I left my room, I heard Gigi’s voice from Ragnar’s bedroom.
He had put her call on the speaker.
She was yapping about nonsense and he was listening.
The big bad wolf who didn’t listen to anyone was tolerating that annoying ass bitch.
"And I wasn’t even able to sleep, did you sleep well last night?" Gigi asked him in a very dramatic tone.
"No!" he replied sternly, "I couldn’t sleep either."
There it was.
He was missing her whole night but what kind of love makes someone this uncomfortable?
He hung up after talking for another five minutes and came out of his room.
Since it was a full moon night, Ragnar and I had decided to stay over at the second pack, the Purple Mist Pack, and just mark our presence at the mate ball before leaving.
All the young people really caught my attention.
The she-wolves were happily roaming around in gowns, hoping to find a mate after midnight.
Well, that was how it worked.
