Chapter 162: 162-He Is So Nosy

Verity:

"That’s a really odd question to ask someone," I responded before quickly adding, "No, he doesn’t."

I didn’t want Roman to get in trouble just yet.

I was planning to make very good use of him.

As long as he was in the picture, the brothers weren’t going to openly take me.

I didn’t want things to turn bitter between us.

As far as they knew, I had a boyfriend, and that gave me a valid reason to push them away.

"Yeah, you were admitted to the hospital the other day," he said again, making me realize traveling with Ragnar was difficult because he pried so much information out of whoever rode with him.

"Yeah, I had food poisoning," I mumbled, slowly sliding back to the edge of the seat as I looked out the window.

I heard him let out a quiet laugh.

It sounded more like a sarcastic scoff.

"And there you go, hiding in your shell."

I turned to him the moment I heard that.

"I’m not hiding," I replied, sounding offended.

"You know what’s a coincidence?" he said, making my heart beat faster.

Why the fuck had I agreed to come with him?

And why the fuck did he have to make it so fucking difficult to deal with?

"That an old man we were going to visit was also admitted there."

As he continued speaking, I realized he had all the information about my hospital visit that day.

Literally everything.

"Yeah, I brought him in and paid his bill."

Before he could say anything else, I chose to tell him myself, acting as though it wasn’t a big deal.

"Uh-huh," Ragnar murmured.

I slowly settled back into place and turned to look at him.

"He is the same man who was supposed to have the footage of Oliver’s attack."

I decided to keep telling the truth.

I already knew he had information, so lying would only make things worse for me.

"And what business did you have with him?" he asked, his fingers twitching slightly. It drew my attention to all the rings he was wearing.

One held a blue sapphire set in silver.

Another had a strange metallic black stone with white and red sparkles embedded in it.

It was an overall very unusual ring.

He wore another one with a beautiful green stone.

"I visited him to find out if he had the footage."

I told him the truth.

"He told me he didn’t have it," I said with a sigh, looking down.

"And why would you go ask for the footage?" he asked again, his voice calm.

I hated every time he acted as though he’d caught me in a lie.

"Because I was attacked by that person and left in pain in my own home. So yeah, I wanted to know who it was. I wanted to take matters into my own hands for my own safety and protection because I realized I was on my own."

I’m not sure why I became so emotional, but by the time I finished speaking, tears shimmered in my eyes.

I quickly blinked them away before turning my head toward the window.

This time, I didn’t turn my whole body.

I stayed where I was, my back resting against the seat.

"So you’re not going to want to know who drugged you?"

My heart did a somersault in my chest.

I sucked in a deep breath but didn’t respond.

My fingers curled around the strap of my bag.

Then there was silence.

We finally arrived at the border of the Green Mist pack.

"The Green Mist pack is known for its herbs,"

I started speaking, changing the topic to something more professional.

"I’m not interested," he replied coldly.

My head snapped toward him, and I noticed he was cracking his knuckles while looking away.

This man’s ego was so big.

I didn’t answer one question, and he was already acting like a spoiled brat.

I remained silent until we met with the Alpha and Beta of the pack. They had booked us two rooms in their mansion.

The rest of the evening went well. We just talked about the project.

The Alpha suggested building a fence around the area between the three packs. It wasn’t going to be easy, though.

Just because an Alpha King owned the entire world didn’t mean he could declare that land the private property of any pack.

The biggest issue was the rogue community.

The packs already had established borders, and extending them would seem a little unfair.

Even if fairness wasn’t the issue, I was pretty sure Alpha King Ragnar could do it without anyone questioning him, considering he had already been expanding and creating new packs.

The real problem was that there was no guarantee the monster wouldn’t be able to cross the fence.

Unless the fences were made of silver and gold-spun wire, with warriors stationed every few miles, a simple fence wouldn’t be able to stop it.

Still, I listened to the Alpha.

After that, they made dinner for us. We ate, then retired to our rooms.

I walked upstairs behind Ragnar, realizing his room was first and mine was right next to his.

"Come to my room," Ragnar said before unlocking his door.

For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.

"Sorry?" I asked.

He rolled his eyes and grunted.

"All right, I get it," I replied, immediately realizing he was getting annoyed.

Once he entered his room, I followed him inside.

He immediately shrugged off his coat in a rough, impatient motion, like he hadn’t enjoyed the meeting at all.

From the way he had spoken with the Alpha, I already knew Ragnar wasn’t interested. He had a few problems of his own already.

"Start speaking," he demanded.

"About what?" I asked in a soft, gentle tone.

He turned around and, while undoing his cufflinks, shot me an annoyed glance.

"Oh, you mean the project?" I asked.

He gave me the same look as before. A look of annoyance.

"I think building a simple fence wouldn’t solve anything. It would probably make the other packs think these three Alphas are just trying to expand their territory."

As soon as I said those words, I watched Ragnar’s muscles finally relax.

That was a rare sight.

He only nodded before walking over to sit on the couch, and I realized this was his way of appreciating that I had done a good job.

Wow. What a subtle asshole.
