Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Coming Knocking

Lan Zhi craned her neck to swallow, her eyes fixed on the white flour bun in her bowl. She quickly placed the bun back into Gu Fei’s bowl. "I’ll just eat this."

Gu Fei shook her head. "Even I can’t get that down, so how could you? Don’t force yourself."

Lan Zhi waved her hands emphatically. "No, I have to eat it. I should eat whatever your mother and the others are eating. I... I’ll get used to it soon."

Watching Lan Zhi struggle to swallow, Gu Erlang felt inexplicably upset. He stood up, got a bowl, filled it with vegetable soup, and placed it in front of her. "If you can’t get it down, soak it in the soup. It’s easier to swallow once it’s soft."

Lan Zhi gave him a grateful smile and tore the bun into pieces, dropping them into the soup.

Gu Fei sighed. "Mother, from now on, either we all eat white flour, or we all eat coarse grains. I can’t enjoy eating well by myself."

Mrs. Chen was silent for a moment before saying, "Little Fei, if you don’t run the house, you don’t know how precious every grain is. We’re about to flee a famine, and we have no idea how long we’ll be on the road. With this many mouths to feed, we could eat through a mountain of food. How could we possibly not conserve?"

Gu Fei didn’t argue further. In truth, she didn’t know how much rice and flour she had in her dimensional space, either. ’I’ll have to take a proper inventory in a bit.’

Just then, a frail, trembling figure appeared in the doorway and shuffled inside.

Farming households usually left their courtyard gates unlocked.

Gu Qing was sitting facing the door. He quickly stood up and went to support her. "Grandmother, what brings you here?"

Mrs. Chen also stood up. "Mother, have you eaten? Please, join us."

The old madam waved her hand, her expression sour. "I’m not eating your family’s food."

She turned to look at Gu Fei, her eyes fixed on the white flour bun in her hand. "Well, will wonders never cease. I, your own grandmother, don’t even get to eat white flour buns, yet a little slip of a girl like you is already enjoying them. Aren’t you afraid of shortening your own life for it!"

Gu Fei remained silent, simply taking a huge bite of her bun before reaching for the other dishes.

Mrs. Chen quickly forced a smile. "Mother, Little Fei is still recovering from her injuries, so I made her something a little better. If you want some, we still have a bit of white flour. I can make some and bring it to you later."

The old madam slammed her cane on the ground and shouted, "I won’t eat it! I’m not so blessed! I didn’t raise a good son or a good daughter-in-law, so I don’t deserve to eat!"

Gu Zhang stood up wearily. "Mother, we were having a perfectly nice meal. What is all this about? If you have some complaint about your son, just say it directly."

The old madam turned and glared at Gu Zhang. "I want to ask you just how you raised your daughter! She’s disrespectful to her elders and unkind to her brother! All she knows is how to hoard food for herself!"

"She wouldn’t even spare a single piece of candy for her younger brother! What’s the use in raising a girl like that!"

’So, she’s here to stick up for Bao’er,’ Gu Fei sneered inwardly. ’No wonder.’

She said coolly, "Grandma, you can’t blame my father. Wasn’t I sold when I was six? I’m sure my father wanted to teach me, but unfortunately, I never had the chance to stay home and receive his guidance."

The old madam’s face instantly turned pale with rage. The matter of selling the girl had been a point of contention with her second son for a long time. She had stubbornly insisted that she was sending Gu Fei to the Marquis Mansion to live a life of luxury.

After saying it so many times, she had come to believe it herself.

Gu Fei’s words were clearly another accusation, and for a moment, the old woman trembled too much to speak.

Seeing his mother’s face had gone pale, Gu Zhang quickly tried to placate her. "Little Fei, do you have any candy left? Hurry up and give it to your grandmother to take to Bao’er."

Gu Fei shook her head. "It’s gone. I gave one piece to Hu Zi, one to Little Cao, and I ate one myself. They’re all gone."

The old madam glared at Gu Fei. "You definitely have more! Hand them over now!"
