Chapter 43: Chapter 43: A Little Craving Won’t Kill You
Gu Zhang asked in a stern voice, "Er Lang, why did you hit Bao’er?"
His eyes red, Gu Erlang held up Gu Fei’s hand. "Bao’er was biting my sister! He bit down with all his might, and I couldn’t pull him off. What else was I supposed to do?"
Only then did Gu Zhang see the deep teeth marks bitten into Gu Fei’s finger.
Gu Zhang was furious. "Brother, your son may be precious, but my daughter is precious too! Watch your son from now on, and don’t let him come bothering my Little Fei again!"
Mrs. Chen finally rushed over. Seeing Gu Fei’s raised finger, then glancing at Ms. Qian who looked ready to fight to the death, she immediately burst into a wail. "Oh, my precious darling! You were already injured, and now you’re hurt again! What are we going to do?"
Gu Fei nudged her mother with her elbow. ’Mom, you’re laying it on a bit thick.’
Gu Laoda’s mouth twitched. He looked at his son sitting on the ground, then at Ms. Qian who was desperately trying to break free, and felt completely drained.
Just then, the village chief saw the chaos and, standing on a stool, yelled at the top of his lungs, "Break it up, break it up! Go home and cook! We can discuss fleeing the famine later, there’s no rush at this very moment. We still have a few days before we leave."
"Those who are leaving, hurry back and prepare. We depart in five days!"
Gu Zhang looked unhappy. "Come on, let’s go home."
Gu Erlang quickly hoisted his sister onto his back. Gu Fei glanced at Bao’er on the ground and suddenly called out, "Bao’er!"
Bao’er stood up, sniffled, and looked at Gu Fei.
Gu Fei took out a piece of candy, jiggled it in her hand for him to see, then slowly popped it into her own mouth.
Bao’er immediately burst out crying, "WAAAH!" He started rolling around on the ground frantically, "I want candy, I want candy—"
A corner of Gu Fei’s mouth lifted into a smirk. She patted Gu Erlang, "Second Brother, let’s go."
Nearby, Lan Zhi covered her mouth to stifle a giggle.
When they got home, Lan Zhi quickly applied medicine to Gu Fei’s injury.
Gu Fei was lying on the kang, breathing heavily. Mrs. Chen came in and said in a huff, "From this day on, you’re not allowed to go anywhere. You are not to step foot outside this house until you’ve fully recovered!"
She took Gu Fei’s finger to examine it closely. "Thank goodness, the skin isn’t broken."
"That Bao’er, honestly. He’s six or seven years old and still biting people!"
With that, she turned and went out to cook.
A short while later, dinner was ready, and the family gathered around the table to eat.
Suddenly, Bao’er’s ear-splitting cries drifted from next door. "I want candy—I want candy—"
Then came Ms. Qian’s voice. "Bao’er, stop crying! Mama will kill a chicken for you."
Bao’er’s crying immediately changed its tune. "I want to eat the chicken, but I want candy too—"
Gu Fei couldn’t help but let out a snort of laughter, and Lan Zhi pursed her lips, smiling.
Gu Zhang cleared his throat. "Let’s eat, let’s eat."
They’d bought a cut of meat in the city today. Mrs. Chen couldn’t bear to use all of it, so she cut half and stir-fried it with a bowl of string beans.
On the table was a basin of cornbread cakes, as well as two white flour cakes.
Mrs. Chen placed the two white flour cakes in front of Gu Fei. "Little Fei needs to recuperate, so she has to eat well. The rest of you, don’t get greedy."
Little Cao was the first to pipe up. "Grandma, I’m not greedy. I’ll just eat the cornbread cakes."
Lan Zhi had never eaten a cornbread cake before. She gleefully picked one up with her chopsticks. ’This cake is such a lovely golden color, it must be delicious.’
Gu Fei watched her without a word.
The first bite Lan Zhi took was actually quite fragrant. But after chewing a few times, when she tried to swallow, her throat felt like it was full of sand. She couldn’t get it down no matter what.
Gu Fei sighed. ’I knew it. With a throat as delicate as a young lady’s, she’d never be able to eat coarse grains.’
She picked up one of the cakes from her own bowl and placed it in Lan Zhi’s.
Mrs. Chen looked as if she wanted to say something, but held her tongue.
Gu Zhang frowned.
Li Chunhua kept her head down feeding Little Cao, as if she hadn’t seen a thing.
