Chapter 42: Chapter 42: I’ll Fight You to the Death

Hu Zi covered his mouth. "Can’t give you any. There was only one, and I already ate it."

Bao’er spun around and ran off, weaving his way through the crowd until he finally found Gu Fei.

He thrust his hand out at Gu Fei, demanding, "Give me candy!"

Gu Fei was just about to pull one out of her space, but then she reconsidered. ’Wait, this isn’t right.’ She put it back.

’This kid, Bao’er, just runs up and acts all aggressive. Do I owe him candy or something?’

She rolled her eyes. "All gone."

Bao’er refused to accept that. He grabbed Gu Fei’s pant leg. "Give me candy! If you don’t, I’ll get my mom to beat you!"

Gu Fei turned his head to face the other way. "Go on, then. Your mom’s right over there. Go tell her to come beat me."

Ms. Qian was busy talking with a few other women, spittle flying as she gossiped animatedly.

Bao’er ran over and tugged on his mother’s pants. "Mom, Little Fei gave Hu Zi candy but not me! You have to beat her up for me."

After having three daughters, Ms. Qian had finally been blessed with this one son. She cherished him like the apple of her eye and would give him anything he asked for.

Hearing Bao’er’s complaint, she didn’t even pause to think before marching him over to Gu Fei.

"Little Fei, if you have candy, why won’t you give some to your younger brother?" Ms. Qian demanded as soon as she arrived.

Gu Fei smiled. "I don’t have any more."

"And even if I did, I wouldn’t give him any."

"It’s my stuff. I’ll give it to whoever I please. What business is it of yours?"

Ms. Qian’s eyes widened. "You girl! How can you be like this? Bao’er is your little brother too! We may have split the households, but we’re still family. You can’t even part with a single piece of candy? How can you be so petty!"

Gu Fei laughed. "I’m just following your example, Auntie. You lent us one tael of silver and came demanding it back not even an hour later. Is that any way for an aunt to behave?"

Ms. Qian was livid. "You insolent girl, you hold a grudge over the smallest things!"

She tugged on Bao’er. "Come on, let’s go home. I’ll make you some malt candy."

But Bao’er dug his heels in. "I don’t want malt candy! I want the kind Hu Zi had! He said it’s a hundred times tastier than malt candy!"

Looking at Bao’er, Gu Fei started to soften. He was, after all, just a six- or seven-year-old kid. ’What’s the point of arguing with him?’

Just as Gu Fei was about to pull a piece of candy from her space, Bao’er suddenly lunged, grabbing her hand and biting down hard.

Whenever his older sister, Xing’er, wouldn’t do as he pleased, he would bite her viciously. Xing’er never dared to retaliate and would always end up giving in.

Without a second thought, Bao’er tried the same tactic on Gu Fei.

Gu Erlang saw what was happening from the side and rushed to pull him off. "Bao’er, let go of Sister Xiao Fei! Now!"

But Bao’er had bitten down with surprising force, clamping his jaw on Gu Fei’s finger and refusing to let go.

Gu Fei cried out in pain.

Gu Erlang grew frantic and smacked Bao’er on the side of the head.

The blow was a little too forceful, and Bao’er tumbled to the ground. Seemingly unfazed by the pain, he immediately started rolling around on the floor, wailing, "I want candy! I want candy!"

Seeing her son get hit, Ms. Qian felt a pang so sharp it was as if her own heart was being squeezed.

She lunged at Gu Erlang, swinging a slap. "You dare hit my Bao’er! I’ll kill you!"

But there was no way Gu Erlang would let her hit him; he simply sidestepped to dodge the blow.

Gu Zhong, Gu Zhang, and Gu Rong were all standing nearby.

They had been discussing their plans to flee the famine and hadn’t been paying close attention to what was going on around them.

Seeing that a fight was breaking out, the men hurried forward to pull them apart.

When Bao’er saw that he was no longer the center of attention—with the adults now busy fighting and breaking up the fight—he stopped his rolling and sat up on the ground to watch the spectacle.

Ms. Qian struggled with all her might to break free from Gu Zhong, who had wrapped his arms tightly around her.

Ms. Qian twisted around and started pummeling Gu Zhong. "You useless piece of trash! Your son just got hit, and you’re holding me back! If you had any backbone, you’d go give Gu Erlang a beating!"
