Chapter 41: Chapter 41: 100 Times More Delicious Than Malt Candy

The village chief looked at the crowd, his expression conflicted. ’Who would want to leave? I don’t want to leave either. I have a fine home of green brick and tile, dozens of acres of land... all that I’ve built up, and in the blink of an eye, I have to abandon it all!’

It was an agonizing, gut-wrenching pain, but there was nothing he could do.

The Heavenly Book had stated it plainly: starvation for a thousand li, plagues running rampant. If they didn’t leave, they would not survive!

After he finished speaking, the village chief said no more. Whether to go or not was a decision everyone had to make for themselves. He couldn’t very well hold a knife to their necks and force them to come along.

Chaos erupted in the crowd as everyone began searching for close friends, family, and siblings to figure out what to do.

Gu Zhong looked around and, after some difficulty, found Gu Zhang. He quickly pulled him aside. "Second Brother, something this big, how could you not have told me first? Are you really planning to flee the famine?"

Gu Rong, the third brother of the Gu Family, squeezed his way over as well. "Second Brother, surely it hasn’t come to fleeing the famine, has it? If we really leave, what will happen to our house and land?"

Gu Zhang sighed. "I only got the news last night myself. I haven’t had a chance to tell you."

"Third Brother, forget about the house and land. There’s no grain in the fields anyway, and it’s not like anyone can steal the house. We have to survive first."

Gu Rong was taken aback. "Second Brother, you’re really going?"

Gu Zhang nodded solemnly.

Gu Rong only needed a moment’s thought to make up his mind. "Alright, then I’ll go with you, Second Brother."

He gritted his teeth. "Besides, there are only three people in my family, and I only have a few acres of land. It won’t break my heart to leave it behind."

His second brother was the only truly educated man in the family—no, in the entire village. Although he and their eldest brother were literate, they could barely recognize a few words. Second Brother was also sharp; if the family hadn’t suffered that misfortune all those years ago, he would have had no problem becoming a Scholar.

For decades, he had been accustomed to letting his second brother make the final decision on all important matters.

Gu Zhong was still hesitant. "I... I need to think this over carefully."

Gu Zhang didn’t try to persuade him. He just said to Gu Zhong, "Tomorrow, go to Eldest Sister’s house and tell her. No matter what, she must come with us."

Gu Zhong’s heart skipped a beat. ’He’s even telling me to get Eldest Sister... Second Brother is truly determined to do this.’

He was already leaning toward leaving, but he still said, "I’ll go back and discuss it with Ms. Qian."

Gu Rong scoffed. "Eldest Brother, she’s just a woman, simple-minded and short-sighted. What’s the use in discussing it with her?"

Standing off to the side, Gu Qing finally understood why his sister had wanted him to buy a mule cart.

’We have to flee the famine!’

Just then, Gu Rong’s son, Hu Zi, ran over and hugged Gu Fei’s leg. "Sister Xiao Fei, I want candy."

Earlier, when Gu Fei was leaving the house, she had popped a milk candy into Little Cao’s mouth.

Little Cao’s cheek was bulging with the candy, which she still hadn’t finished. Hu Zi had noticed her mouth moving, and when he leaned in closer, he caught a sweet fragrance.

When he asked what she was eating, Little Cao mumbled indistinctly, "My sister gave me candy."

And that’s why Hu Zi had come running.

Gu Fei fished out a candy, discreetly tore off the wrapper, and called to Hu Zi, "Open your mouth."

Hu Zi opened his mouth, and a piece of candy slipped inside.

His eyes widened as an explosion of sweetness hit his taste buds. ’This is... SO... GOOD!’

Before Gu Fei could say a word, Hu Zi had already run off again.

He ran up to a few of his playmates and began to show off eagerly. "I have candy and you don’t!"

One of the children pouted. "Big deal. It’s not like we’ve never had candy before. I just had some malt candy inside."

Hu Zi opened his mouth. "It’s not malt candy! My Sister Xiao Fei gave it to me, and it’s super delicious! A hundred times better than malt candy!"

His playmates couldn’t imagine a taste a hundred times better than malt candy, and they all stared at Hu Zi with envy.

Suddenly, Bao’er, his eldest uncle’s child, grabbed Hu Zi. "Give me that candy!"
