Chapter 45: Chapter 45: I Want Candy

Gu Fei still had candy, but she wasn’t willing to give it away.

’Young or old, when they ask me for things, can’t they just say it nicely?’

’They’re all so aggressive, and they even blame me, as if I owe them something.’

’Fine! I won’t give them a thing!’

Gu Fei simply shook her head. "I’m really all out."

Leaning on her cane, the old lady sneered, "I see it clearly now. That girl has started to hate me."

"Go on, you lot, keep protecting her. She’s an ungrateful brat. You’ll all see one day!"

The old lady turned to leave. Gu Qing stepped forward. "Grandma, let me help you."

The old lady forcefully shrugged him off. "I don’t need your help! I can walk on my own!"

A moment later, the old lady was out the door. From the next courtyard came Bao’er’s bright, piping voice. "Grandma, where’s the candy you went to get me?"

The old lady muttered something in a low voice.

Suddenly, Bao’er started wailing again. "I don’t care! I want candy! I want candy—"

Everyone in the room looked at each other in dismay. Gu Qing sighed. "That kid, Bao’er... so headstrong."

Everyone silently picked up their chopsticks and resumed eating.

After they had eaten for a while, Gu Zhang instructed Er Lang, "Tomorrow, go to your uncle’s house. Have a good talk with him and try to convince him to travel with us."

Then he looked at Ms. Li. "You should do the same with your family. Go back home tomorrow and tell them what the village chief said. If they want to leave, we should all go together."

Ms. Li nodded.

Her family lived in the next village, so it would be an easy trip.

After dinner, Lan Zhi volunteered to wash the dishes.

Mrs. Chen told her not to, but she insisted.

Lan Zhi was panicking inwardly.

’I’m a maid that Gu Fei bought for 1800 taels. That’s enough money to buy a hundred servants! If I don’t start working hard and just freeload, the Gu Family will sell me.’

Gu Fei returned to her room, flopped onto the kang bed, and started taking stock of the items in her space.

There were over a hundred bags of rice and flour combined, each weighing twenty jin. That added up to more than two thousand jin, which should be enough to last them until they reached the south.

She had over fifty cases of mineral water from several different brands. Each case held twenty-four bottles. It seemed like a lot, but it definitely wouldn’t be enough for the journey. Two bottles of water per person per day was a conservative estimate.

With so many people in the family, they could probably go through an entire case in a single day.

There was plenty of cooking oil, though—twenty or thirty cases.

She had a full range of seasonings, plus some snacks and other miscellaneous items.

There was only a tiny amount of fruit left. Gu Fei decided not to eat it for the time being. She would save it for when they were truly desperate.

Once she finished her inventory, Gu Fei took out the animal hides Gu Qing had bought and piled the several dozen hides on the kang bed.

Mrs. Chen walked in and froze. "These hides... they’re—"

Gu Fei figured Mrs. Chen had gotten the wrong idea, assuming she had conjured the hides out of thin air again. "Big Brother bought them today," she explained. "I was thinking we could make some sheepskin coats for you and Dad to wear when winter sets in."

Li Chunhua lifted the door curtain and entered as well, chiming in, "With this many hides, if we’re careful with the cutting, everyone in the family can get a sheepskin coat."

Just as she said that, a sharp CRASH came from the kitchen. Mrs. Chen slapped her thigh. "My bowl—"

Mrs. Chen dashed to the kitchen to find Lan Zhi staring at her, her eyes welling with tears. On the floor lay a bowl, shattered to pieces.

Mrs. Chen sighed. ’Even though my daughter didn’t say anything, I can see it,’ she thought. ’This Lan Zhi... she can’t be a servant. She must be a young lady from the Marquis Mansion. Look at that soft, delicate skin. We can’t expect her to do any real work.’

’If my daughter wants to keep her, there’s nothing I can do about it.’

Mrs. Chen softened her voice. "It’s alright. A broken bowl is just a broken bowl. This isn’t the kind of work you should be doing anyway."

"Do you know how to sew? Go on, head to the other room. Little Fei mentioned something about making sheepskin coats."
