Chapter 73: Chapter 73: I Saved You, and Not Even a Word of Thanks?
That night, Caleb Lowell left the airport and got into his private car.
The business trip had been long and fast-paced, and even he couldn’t help but feel a little exhausted.
The city lights streamed past as the driver asked, "President Lowell, are we heading to the Lancaster residence now?"
Previously, Caleb Lowell would always go see Jane Lancaster the moment he returned from a business trip, so the driver assumed this time would be no different.
After all, the young couple had been apart for some time and would naturally want to see each other as soon as possible.
Caleb Lowell froze for a moment. He couldn’t explain why, but in that instant, he felt an intense aversion to the idea. "We’re not going to the Lancasters’."
The driver, a little surprised, asked cautiously, "Then would you like to go home now, sir?"
Caleb Lowell fell silent for a moment. It was still early, and he didn’t particularly want to go home either.
"Let’s go to the bar district."
On this trip, he’d made a friend—a professional master mixologist—who had introduced him to a stunning whiskey.
His friend had told him he’d built a distillery at the foot of a snow-capped mountain specifically to produce it. Because production was limited, it was currently only supplied to his own bar.
Before they parted, his friend had given him the address of his bar in Stratton’s bar district and told him to stop by anytime, on the house.
It wasn’t about the free drinks; he just suddenly craved that pleasantly tipsy feeling again.
That way, he could temporarily forget about reality and stop agonizing over what kind of person his fiancée truly was.
After the car stopped, the driver said, "I’ll wait here for you, Miss."
Jane Lancaster nodded and walked toward the brilliantly lit commercial street.
She’d had a sudden craving for cake earlier that evening. The moment she mentioned it to Julian Lancaster on WeChat, he immediately bought her a Black Diamond VIP membership for this very shop and had been ready to have the cake delivered to her.
Since she had nothing better to do anyway, and she didn’t want to sit at home having a staring contest with Alvin Lancaster, she decided to pick it up herself.
Because she was a Black Diamond VIP, all the tall, handsome men on staff lined up to welcome her. Their reception was so enthusiastic, it was as if the owner had arrived for an inspection, not a customer to buy cake.
They even lined up to see her off when she left.
Two of the handsome employees helped carry her cake, insisting on escorting her to her car.
"Hey, isn’t that Luna Morgan?" Mama Knight suddenly said.
Jane Lancaster had already spotted her.
The other woman had been sitting by the fountain. The moment she saw Jane, she shot to her feet, steadying herself with her suitcase, her expression clearly nervous.
They gazed at each other from across the fountain, the city’s brilliant lights reflected in their eyes.
Some children were playing in the plaza, and as one ran over, they were easily intercepted by one of the tall employees before they could bump into Jane Lancaster.
A couple of seconds later, Luna Morgan broke eye contact first, turned, and walked away, dragging her suitcase behind her.
Jane Lancaster got into the car and told the driver not to leave just yet. "Wait a moment."
Twenty minutes later, she sighed. "While we’re living in the lap of luxury, someone else is about to be out on the streets again."
She had waited all this time, but in the end, Luna Morgan never came to ask for her help.
Mama Knight didn’t quite understand. "Who are you talking about? Why would she be out on the streets? Doesn’t she have money for a hotel?"
Jane Lancaster paused. It was a line of reasoning that had never occurred to her.
’That’s right,’ she thought. ’Why would she be homeless? Even if she’s short on cash, couldn’t she find a budget hotel to stay in for a few nights?’
It wasn’t like Luna Morgan didn’t earn money. She helped that professor, Quentin Woods, by replicating ancient paintings and was paid for it. Because it was a niche market and her skills were exquisite, her salary wasn’t low at all.
On top of that, she had also appeared on the game show, *The Tower of Wit*, with three Adrian Lancasters, winning at least several hundred thousand in prize money.
No wonder Mama Knight never felt guilty about kicking Luna Morgan out. If you don’t have a place to live, can’t you just stay in a hotel?
"Perhaps she really is broke," Jane Lancaster said after a moment’s thought.
Luna Morgan’s parents were deep in debt and had gone into hiding long ago to escape their creditors.
The family’s house had been repossessed, which was why Luna Morgan was homeless.
Although she was capable of earning money, she always liked to help people for free, so she was never well-off. She had a knack for getting herself into miserable situations, which always ended with some man having to save her.
Jane Lancaster sighed to herself again. ’It’s tough being the long-suffering heroine of the story.’
Luna Morgan didn’t know why, but the moment she saw Jane Lancaster, she just felt afraid.
She knew, of course, that what those people said wasn’t necessarily true. ’Jane isn’t that kind of person.’
’But even if Jane herself didn’t order it, the people around her would still come one after another to torment me.’
Over the past three years, she had been deliberately given a hard time on countless occasions. She was already used to it.
’They can treat me however they want, but why did they have to persecute my cousin’s family?’
’How laughable, for me to dream of being friends with Jane Lancaster. In a single instant, I was cast back down to Hell.’
’Jane eats cakes that cost tens of thousands, served by a flock of handsome, attentive men. Meanwhile, on my own birthday, the best I can do is buy the last, flawed cake left at the shop, only to have the clerk roll their eyes and call me a pauper.’
’We were from two different worlds to begin with.’
"Hey! Get out of the way!"
Hearing the shout, Luna Morgan hurriedly looked up to see several teenage skateboarders careening toward her.
Startled, she instinctively stumbled backward, tripped, and fell right into the fountain.
For a moment, she couldn’t tell what was colder—her heart or her body.
"Hey there, pretty girl. Dragging a suitcase around all by yourself? Can’t find a place to stay?"
The question snapped Luna Morgan back to reality. She looked at the three middle-aged men before her. "Sirs, do any of you have a room for rent?"
"I do," one of them said. "I can take you to see the place."
Luna Morgan hesitated for a moment before following him. "Thank you."
「On the way.」
"Your clothes look wet. You should change out of them and take a hot shower right away."
"You look pale. Are you running a fever?" the man said, reaching out to touch her hand.
A chill shot down Luna Morgan’s spine. "I-I’m not renting your place anymore!" she said, her voice trembling.
She turned to leave, dragging her suitcase, but her legs felt weak and she couldn’t move quickly. The three middle-aged men easily caught up and grabbed her luggage.
"Don’t go, little beauty."
Furious and helpless, her eyes red with frustration, Luna Morgan cried, "You... let go!"
The leader of the group was about to speak when someone kicked him to the ground from behind.
Luna Morgan thought she was done for, but then Caleb Lowell appeared as if from nowhere and saved her.
Tears instantly welled in her eyes. "Young Master Lowell!"
The middle-aged man scrambled to his feet, cursing. "Fuck, where did this pretty boy come from? Do you have any idea who I am...?"
Radiating a dangerous aura, Caleb Lowell rolled up his sleeves, took off his watch, tossed it to Luna Morgan, and advanced on the three men. A fight broke out.
"Miss Morgan, hold on to that watch carefully," an assistant reminded her with a smile. "That’s a collector’s grade Richard Mille. It’s worth over ten million."
Luna Morgan froze, clutching the watch. She didn’t dare move, terrified of damaging something so valuable.
A few minutes later, the three middle-aged men fled in disarray.
Caleb Lowell’s gaze swept the area, and his expression darkened when he saw Luna Morgan’s retreating back.
He strode over and grabbed her arm. "Have you no manners? I save you, and you don’t even say thank you?"
Luna Morgan kept her eyes downcast. "Thank you. I gave the watch back to your assistant."
This only made Caleb angrier. ’What is she doing? Is she avoiding me on purpose?’
Just as he was about to say something more, Luna Morgan suddenly pitched forward and collapsed.
