Chapter 64: Chapter 64: I’m Having Afternoon Tea with Luna
Vincent Holt had a bellyful of things to say and was dying to get them off his chest.
Chloe Dave had reminded him to watch what he said, since Caleb Lowell was clearly on Jane Lancaster’s side. An outsider shouldn’t meddle in their affairs.
Vincent Holt had been displeased at the time. What did he mean, "an outsider shouldn’t meddle"? When it came to a close relationship with Caleb Lowell, who could be closer than his grandmother?
Still, he’d been shrewd enough to coordinate with his grandmother beforehand, shifting the blame for many things onto the old lady.
"My grandma meant well when she asked her to play the erhu. She just wanted her to show some filial piety in front of our relatives."
"That’s just how old people are. A little vain, maybe, but it’s all for your own good. All you have to do is humor them a bit, and they’ll be happy. Who knew she’d be so confrontational?"
"My grandma asked her to delete that lovey-dovey social media post before, so maybe she was unhappy about that, thinking my grandma was being a busybody."
"She even sent me a stock candlestick chart. I could let that slide, but publicly announcing that the Holt family’s stock price was plummeting was just completely inappropriate for the occasion."
"There were so many relatives and business partners there at the time. What if someone was superstitious about that sort of talk and decided not to work with us anymore?"
"Then she got all paranoid, thinking I was targeting her. What reason would I have to target her?"
"In the end, she made a complete mess of the banquet and just walked out, leaving my grandma so angry her high blood pressure acted up. She’s still lying in bed right now."
Vincent Holt said a great deal, and Caleb Lowell listened quietly the entire time.
Chloe Dave was a bit surprised. If it had been him making these complaints, Zion probably would have gotten angry and shut him down right away.
He could also tell that while Vincent Holt seemed impulsive, he was actually very skilled at lodging complaints. Every sentence was meant to guide the listener, to sow discord, yet his expression was one of righteous indignation, making it very deceptive.
Although lying was wrong, he was even more unwilling to see Caleb Lowell side with Jane Lancaster, so he tacitly went along with the lies Vincent Holt was spinning.
"Chloe, is what he said about Mrs. Everett true? Did you see it with your own eyes?" Caleb Lowell suddenly asked.
Chloe Dave snapped out of it, only then realizing the complaints had reached the part about Mrs. Everett.
"Yes." He nodded, then added after a moment of thought, "I did some digging, and it’s true that Mrs. Everett was also partly at fault for not arranging a car properly..."
Caleb Lowell hung up the phone, feeling as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over his head.
Chloe Dave wouldn’t lie, which was why he was trying to make excuses for Jane Lancaster. But only Caleb knew that Jane was just using the incident with Mrs. Everett to make a scene.
She had clearly forgiven Mrs. Everett right in front of him, but the moment he left, she went after Mrs. Everett.
’It’s been so long, and Mrs. Everett has suffered so much, yet I didn’t know a thing.’
The little bit of concern he had just started to feel for Jane Lancaster vanished once more.
After Silas Holt ended his call with Caleb Lowell, his expression darkened.
"Well? What did Caleb Lowell say?" Old Mrs. Holt pressed.
Silas Holt sneered, "What else could he say? Just a verbal apology, telling us not to bother with Jane Lancaster."
Old Mrs. Holt: "I knew it! I knew it! He just loves protecting that little bitch!"
Silas Holt was very dissatisfied with Caleb Lowell’s attitude. ’If a woman is disobedient, even if you can’t bear to hit her, you should at least teach her a lesson.’
But Caleb Lowell, on the other hand, instead of dragging Jane Lancaster over to apologize, actually had the nerve to ask him, her uncle, to be understanding of a junior’s immaturity.
’If you know she’s immature, why do you still indulge her?’
He had originally planned to call Julian Lanscaster to demand an explanation, but when he did, he was met with a soft refusal.
The assistant who answered the phone said that Julian Lanscaster’s stomach condition had flared up and he was currently undergoing treatment. He would make amends once he recovered.
’This is clearly an excuse! They’re treating me like an idiot and just fobbing me off!’
"If that were my own daughter, I would’ve beaten her half to death and delivered her to their doorstep to apologize!" Silas Holt swept everything off the table in a rage.
But no matter how angry he got, there was nothing he could do to Jane Lancaster.
Timothy Lancaster was a notoriously doting father. If he really made a move on her, things would likely get messy.
"No! I will absolutely not let a woman like that marry into the Lowell Family and ruin our family’s reputation!" Old Mrs. Holt was still seething.
Silas Holt: "..."
He disliked Jane Lancaster, but he also disliked the domineering Caleb Lowell.
If Caleb Lowell were to find a powerful marriage partner, that would be a disaster. Wouldn’t he just walk all over all of them then?
Pairing him with a cripple like Jane Lancaster was perfect. It would be best if their house was in constant chaos; he could watch the drama unfold.
Besides, only if Jane Lancaster married into the Lowell Family could he pull rank as her uncle-in-law and slowly torment her.
"And Vincent? He’s never home. Where is he fooling around now?" Silas Holt changed the subject.
Old Mrs. Holt replied, "He went to find that Luna Morgan."
As a father, how could he not see through his son’s little schemes? All that talk about finding a miracle doctor to treat his grandmother’s leg was just an excuse.
Silas Holt saw it clearer than anyone: his son’s behavior at the banquet that day had all been about standing up for that Morgan girl.
If there hadn’t been any conflict, he wouldn’t have cared. After all, Luna Morgan was pretty and sensible, and very respectful toward her elders.
If his son wanted to play around, he’d let him. He himself had a string of romantic entanglements in his youth, and it hadn’t stopped him from later finding a wife from a well-matched family for a strategic marriage.
But after the banquet, he had come to completely resent Luna Morgan.
’Jane Lancaster at least comes from a wealthy family. But who the hell does this girl think she is, daring to cause a scene at a Holt family banquet?’
’If my son hadn’t been bewitched by her, he never would have caused trouble for Jane Lancaster that day.’
’But she had the audacity to side with Jane Lancaster, showing the Holt Family absolutely no respect.’
’I can’t touch Jane Lancaster for now, but dealing with a little girl with no background? That would be all too easy.’
Julian Lanscaster having his assistant say his stomach condition had flared up wasn’t entirely an excuse.
His medical report had come in, and his stomach was indeed in poor condition. Western medicine didn’t have any great solutions, so the doctor could only recommend he see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for slow, gradual treatment.
Alvin Lancaster: "Big Brother, I heard there’s an amazing traditional Chinese medicine doctor in Solara. I’ll pull some strings in the next few days to get an appointment with him."
Jane Lancaster sat on the sofa, a distant look on her face.
"Jay, what do you think?" Julian Lanscaster looked over at her. "Why don’t we all take a trip to Solara to see him?"
Jane Lancaster snapped back to reality. "I’ll go with whatever Big Brother decides."
’Why look far for what is near? Luna Morgan has medicine. She once saved a mysterious old man who gave her a bottle of medicine that he said could cure stomach ailments...’
’And then what?’ Alvin Lancaster couldn’t help but glance sideways at her.
’Luna Morgan was the one who used that bottle of medicine to cure Big Brother’s stomach condition.’
Alvin Lancaster grew anxious. ’Why isn’t my sister saying something so important? Thank god I can hear her thoughts!’
"Then we’ll go to Solara in a few days. I’ll have Lucy arrange to get an appointment," Julian Lanscaster said, making the final decision.
Alvin Lancaster hesitated for a moment. ’Big Brother probably can’t hear her thoughts and doesn’t know anything yet, so I’ll let it go for now.’
He decided to find Luna Morgan in private. He had to get his hands on that medicine.
Jane Lancaster stood up. "Big Brother, I’m heading out."
"Where are you going?" Julian Lanscaster paused before saying, "I’m about to go out as well. I can give you a ride."
Jane Lancaster: "Oh, I have afternoon tea plans with Luna."
