Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Should I Stop This?

As soon as Jane Lancaster walked into the living room, she saw the family doctor was already waiting.

She instantly understood.

’Brother must have called the family doctor here specifically to check on Alvin Lancaster’s leg, right?’

’He’s not like Father. Father is a staunch patriarch, unyielding and never soft-hearted. But while my brother seems strict on the surface, he actually cares deeply for his younger siblings.’

’He made Alvin Lancaster kneel all night, but he was so worried that he didn’t sleep a wink either.’

’There’s a trace of warmth beneath that strict, cold exterior.’

Alvin Lancaster froze. ’So, my brother was silently worrying about me?’

He looked at the faint, dark circles under Julian Lancaster’s eyes and was a little moved. "Brother, Luna was right. Your stomach is in bad shape. You should get a proper check-up."

Julian Lancaster reeked of alcohol. He turned his head to look at Jane Lancaster. "Jay, how are you feeling?"

The family doctor spoke up with a smile, "Alright, why don’t I take a look at all three of you."

After all, each of the three Lancaster siblings had their own issues.

Julian Lancaster was the type who didn’t flush easily when drinking, but his face grew paler the more he drank. His body lacked the enzymes to break down alcohol, making him prone to getting drunk or suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Years of irregular eating habits due to his hectic work schedule had probably led to stomach problems, and drinking now caused him pain.

Alvin Lancaster’s fractured ankle wasn’t healing well. It would require X-rays and a new cast. For now, the doctor could only treat the bruises on his knees from kneeling for so long.

Jane Lancaster was actually the most normal of the three. Although she was physically weak, she had fortunately only had one drink. A hangover-soothing soup and some rest would be enough.

After finishing his work and prescribing some medicine, the family doctor took his leave.

Jane Lancaster finished her hangover soup, then got up and went upstairs to rest.

"What’s this?" A maid who came to clean up paused when she saw the medicine bottle on the coffee table.

Alvin Lancaster recognized it as the bottle of hangover medicine Luna Morgan had given Jane Lancaster and was about to speak.

"Jay forgot it. Give it to me," Julian Lancaster said.

Just as he picked up the bottle, Mama Knight walked over and said, "Young Master, I’m heading up anyway. Let me take it to the Young Miss."

Julian Lancaster furrowed his brow slightly but still placed the medicine bottle on the tray in Mama Knight’s hands.

Alvin Lancaster thought for a moment, then spoke up, "Actually, Mama Knight is a good person. She only has Jay’s best interests at heart. But then again, Father did hire her to be Jay’s nanny."

Julian Lancaster was noncommittal.

"Mama Knight can be a bit presumptuous at times, but she doesn’t mean any harm..."

Julian Lancaster pressed his long fingers to the bridge of his nose. "What exactly are you trying to say?"

Alvin Lancaster froze. He didn’t know why he’d suddenly felt the need to say all this to his brother.

His brother hadn’t shown any dissatisfaction with Mama Knight, yet he couldn’t help but feel nervous.

He was worried his brother would get angry, that he might suspect Mama Knight was the one who spread rumors because of what Luna Morgan said at the Holt Family’s banquet.

This worry was inexplicable and baseless; even he couldn’t explain why he felt it.

"It’s nothing. I just suddenly thought Mama Knight is a good person..."

"If Mama Knight were merely ’a good person,’ she never would have had the chance to stay by Jay’s side," Julian Lancaster interrupted him.

He had no time to stand around listening to Alvin Lancaster evaluate a nanny, so he turned and went upstairs.

Alvin Lancaster slowly sat down on the sofa. He figured he had probably defended Mama Knight out of guilt.

After all, he was the one who had immediately suspected Mama Knight. He was the one who always felt she abused her minor authority and sowed discord.

But Mama Knight hadn’t sowed any discord at all. The one who truly did was Pauline Shaw.

His sister’s inner voice didn’t lie. She didn’t even know he could hear her thoughts, so how could she be faking it?

He had been too prejudiced, completely unwilling to find out the truth of the matter, and had rushed to condemn his sister.

The next day was the weekend, and Lucy Finch arrived early in the morning.

When Jane Lancaster came down for breakfast, she saw Julian Lancaster sitting there, going over work with Lucy Finch.

Just as they reached a stopping point in their work, Julian Lancaster got up and walked away.

Lucy Finch said with a smile, "The Young Master is so busy he completely neglects his health. The fact that he’s decided to take two days off this weekend for a full physical must be thanks to the Young Miss."

Jane Lancaster was quiet for a moment and didn’t respond.

"It was the Young Miss who persuaded the Young Master to look after his health, wasn’t it?" Seeing the silent atmosphere, Lucy Finch felt a bit lost. Had she said the wrong thing?

’Why would I persuade him to do that? If I were to persuade him of anything, it’d be to work harder. After all, at not even thirty, he’s in his prime.’

’Why would a workaholic like him suddenly decide to rest and get a checkup? Don’t tell me he’s going to discover his cancer early.’

’Should I try to stop this?’

Alvin Lancaster’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly tried to smooth things over. "I was the one who persuaded my brother last night to get some rest and have a checkup. After all, he’s the pillar of the family now and works too hard."

’Heh, what a credit-stealer. Brother clearly decided to rest and get a checkup because of Luna Morgan.’

Alvin Lancaster: "..."

"I also think Brother works too hard. He should take a good long rest," Jane Lancaster said suddenly, her face full of concern.

She turned to Julian Lancaster, who was walking over, and said, "Brother, let’s go on a vacation, shall we?"

Julian Lancaster: "Sorry, I’m afraid I can’t. There’s too much to do at the company."

Jane Lancaster put on a disappointed expression.

Julian Lancaster looked at his sister with fond exasperation. "I promise you, Brother will take you abroad for fun when he has time, okay? We’ll take a cruise to Antarctica."

’Antarctica? You’d better go by yourself. After all, that’s where you’ll be buried. The glaciers are dead, silent, and cold—perfectly suited for you.’

Alvin Lancaster’s face turned a little pale. ’Why is sister always thinking about death?’

But he made a silent mental note: Brother can’t go to Antarctica. Under no circumstances!

Julian Lancaster raised his teacup, hiding the thoughtful look in his eyes.

’Antarctica? Does Jay actually know some kind of prophecy, or is she just ranting?’

After a moment, he put down his cup and said gently to Jane Lancaster, "Regarding the Holt Family matter, have you and Caleb Lowell sorted things out?"

Jane Lancaster shook her head. There was no need to sort anything out in the first place.

Julian Lancaster looked at her disapprovingly. "Even married couples need to communicate, let alone the two of you who are just dating."

"I didn’t handle it last night because I thought a third party’s account might be distorted. You and Caleb Lowell should have cleared the air yourselves."

"If you don’t explain things first, what if Caleb Lowell jumps to conclusions?"

He sighed. "Forget it. I’ll talk to Caleb Lowell about this."

「—」

"Brother, I understand. Thank you for helping clarify what happened."

Caleb Lowell wasn’t surprised to receive Julian Lancaster’s call.

He had gotten word of what happened at the Holt Family’s estate as soon as it occurred.

He had been waiting for Jane Lancaster to explain herself. As long as she was willing to explain, he was willing to believe her.

Unfortunately, a day went by, and all he got was disappointment.

There was nothing wrong with Julian Lancaster’s account, but he wasn’t going to blindly trust one side of the story.

"Chloe Dave, tell me exactly what happened," he said, dialing Chloe Dave’s number.

Chloe Dave had been waiting for this call. He had tried to call yesterday, but Caleb Lowell didn’t want to listen at the time, so he had no choice but to hold his tongue.

"Zion, Vincent is right here with me. Why don’t I have him tell you himself?"
