Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Was It Pauline Who Told You Jay Wanted to Eat West Mountain Bamboo Shoots?

The room fell silent after Jane Lancaster’s words.

Luna Morgan’s eyes grew moist. Though she tried her best to hide it, her voice was still choked with emotion. "Miss Lancaster, it’s what I ought to do."

Jane Lancaster sighed internally.

’She must feel incredibly wronged, right? After all, the suspect was the one who should have been condemned, but public opinion threw her into the eye of the storm instead.’

’Back then, anyone and everyone felt they could condemn her, even though it’s not like she’d done anything heinous.’

’She holds no grudges, nor is she full of bitterness like some people. Instead, she’s been actively trying to repay the favor and make amends. But even after all she’s done, people like Caleb Lowell and Julian Lancaster still turn a blind eye to it all.’

’This debt of gratitude is so heavy. Hasn’t it been suffocating her all these years?’

Hearing this, Alvin Lancaster was speechless. ’You know it’s suffocating her, yet you still have the heart to use her?’

"I’ve always believed that nothing is ever truly ’supposed’ to happen. Saving you was my choice, not yours," Jane Lancaster said gently. "So there’s no need for you to carry such a heavy burden. It’s too hard on you."

Luna Morgan was deeply moved. "Miss Lancaster, I understand. But it doesn’t feel like a hardship. Wanting to repay you is my choice, too."

"Silly girl, I’m all better now. You’ve already repaid the debt."

Luna Morgan sniffled. "I’m very happy that you’ve recovered, but a life-saving debt can never be fully repaid."

Miss Lancaster was so good to her, which only strengthened her resolve to continue repaying the kindness.

"She’s lying again!" Chloe Dave was on the verge of cursing. Others might not get it, but he knew exactly what was going on.

The other day, when Luna Morgan wanted to plead on Mrs. Everett’s behalf, Jane Lancaster had been pressuring Mrs. Everett while spouting a bunch of high-sounding, righteous words.

The expression she wore while deceiving Luna Morgan then was identical to the one she had now.

Vincent Holt’s eyes widened. "Luna, she’s doing it on purpose! Don’t believe her!"

He had clearly wanted Luna to remain forever indebted to Jane Lancaster, so how had the tables been turned?

’Is this life-saving debt ever going to end? Doesn’t this mean she’ll have the upper hand over Luna for the rest of their lives?’

Vincent Holt was frantic, hoping Luna Morgan would come to her senses and not fall for the trick.

Jane Lancaster turned to look at him. "I’d like to ask you, why are you so deliberately trying to sow discord? First, you insisted on making me compete with Luna on the erhu, and now you’re spreading rumors that I bully Luna. What are your true intentions?"

Her tone was calm and unhurried, but the question was sharp.

All eyes turned to Vincent Holt once more. After all, the two parties involved had already made peace, so Vincent’s frantic agitation did seem rather suspicious.

"Enough! Can’t we just have a peaceful meal?!" Old Mrs. Holt slammed her chopsticks down.

No matter what, it was wrong for Jane Lancaster to dare to give her precious grandson a hard time.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. "It seems to me you didn’t come to wish me a happy birthday, you came to cause trouble!"

A few of the Holt family’s relatives sitting nearby began to whisper among themselves.

"We shouldn’t have invited her. The old lady only invited her because she thinks highly of her, but look at her, causing all this drama."

"She’s always looked down on us. Now that she sees the Lancaster and Lowell families doing so well, she doesn’t give a damn about the Holt family."

"It’s the old lady’s birthday, for heaven’s sake. This is a deliberate attempt to embarrass her."

"What kind of junior acts like this? Stirring up trouble on such an auspicious day."

Jane Lancaster nodded in agreement. "Exactly. Vincent Holt, what kind of junior are you, deliberately stirring up trouble on your grandmother’s auspicious day!"

Vincent Holt was about to go insane with rage. "Jane Lancaster!"

’This is too much! They were obviously talking about you!’

Old Mrs. Holt was so angry she clutched her chest, looking as if she might collapse.

"If my grandmother gets sick from anger, can you bear the responsibility?" Vincent Holt demanded as he hurried to support the old lady.

CLATTER! Jane Lancaster "accidentally" knocked over a candlestick on the long table, then weakly clutched her forehead.

’Heh, you can play the frail old lady, but I can play the sickly invalid. Like anyone can’t act.’

"Miss Lancaster!" Luna Morgan’s face went pale with fright. She rushed over to support her. "Are you feeling unwell somewhere?"

Seeing that faking illness wasn’t working, Old Mrs. Holt’s face darkened.

Vincent Holt was furious. "She’s definitely faking it! The doctor said she’s fully recovered!"

"But the doctor also said her body is severely depleted and she can’t drink alcohol," Luna Morgan retorted, looking at Vincent Holt seriously. "Miss Lancaster is not in good health. You shouldn’t have forced her to drink that glass of red wine."

How did this suddenly become his fault? Vincent Holt was speechless with anger.

"Let me." A hand reached out, taking Jane Lancaster’s arm from Luna Morgan’s grasp.

Julian Lancaster’s expression was impassive. "It’s common knowledge that my sister’s health is poor. Even if you were joking, there should be a limit."

With that, he offered an apology to Old Mrs. Holt and Silas Holt. "We had no intention of causing offense. We will take our leave now. We wish the Old Madam a long and prosperous life."

Someone tried to smooth things over and persuade them to stay, but he paid them no mind. With a glance at Alvin Lancaster, the three siblings left directly.

Luna Morgan hesitated for a moment, then also murmured an apology and chased after them.

She was a little worried about Jane Lancaster, and also a little worried about Julian Lancaster.

Vincent Holt had never been so thwarted. With no outlet for his simmering rage, he angrily swept the dishes in front of him onto the floor.

Such behavior was completely inappropriate, especially with so many guests still present.

"You brat! Who do you think you’re throwing a tantrum at?" Silas Holt couldn’t hold back and slapped him across the face.

"How dare you hit him? I wouldn’t even dream of touching a hair on his head!" Seeing her precious grandson get hit, Old Mrs. Holt immediately started wailing dramatically.

The Holt family’s banquet descended into chaos.

——

"Eldest Young Master!" Luna Morgan called out as she chased after them.

With a grim face, Julian Lancaster paid her no mind, only stopping when he felt his sister stir in his arms.

"Jay?"

"Brother, I’m alright now." Jane Lancaster struggled to stand up straight. "I think Luna is calling for you."

The two of them stopped and waited for Luna Morgan to approach. Only then did Julian Lancaster speak, his tone indifferent. "What is it?"

Luna Morgan bit her lip. "Eldest Young Master, you drank so much. I was worried your stomach would be upset. I have a hangover remedy here..."

"No need." Julian Lancaster rejected the offer.

Jane Lancaster, however, took it from her. "Thank you for the hangover remedy. I’m actually feeling a little dizzy."

She winked at Luna Morgan, signaling that she would convince Julian Lancaster to take the medicine. Only then did Luna Morgan feel relieved.

Julian Lancaster saw the exchange of expressions between them but didn’t say anything more.

The driver brought the car over. The three siblings got in, and Luna Morgan took a few steps back, watching them leave.

Alvin Lancaster stared out the window at the receding streetscape, lost in thought for a moment. Then his phone vibrated a few times as a new message came in.

It was from Luna Morgan, reminding him to make a bowl of soup for Julian Lancaster when they got home.

He replied to the message, then suddenly recalled Luna Morgan’s anxious expression when she was trying to explain herself earlier. On an impulse, he sent another message.

Alvin Lancaster: [Luna, was it Pauline who told you Jay wanted to eat West Mountain Bamboo Shoots?]

[How did you know?] The message was quickly retracted. A moment later, Luna Morgan sent a new reply.

Luna Morgan: [Sorry, Alvin. I didn’t dare say it just now because I was afraid of causing trouble for Pauline.]

Alvin Lancaster was completely stunned.
