Chapter 55: Chapter 55: That Person Is Claire Sheffield

Pauline Shaw couldn’t help but glance over. ’Really? Is Alvin Lancaster’s fate that tragic?’

’But how could he develop a mental illness? You can’t tell at all. Isn’t he usually so carefree?’

Then, she heard the prophecy about herself.

’Forced into a relationship, then jumps off a building, never to wake up.’

Pauline Shaw froze, looking up at Jane Lancaster in disbelief. But Jane had already shifted her gaze to Julian Lanscaster.

’And you... how could the tragic second male lead possibly live a long life? Of course, dying young is what makes people unable to get over you, what makes you unforgettable.’

’So you get cancer, and after coughing up blood for a while, you die a beautifully tragic death.’

Julian Lanscaster’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.

A strange silence descended upon the room.

"Why has everyone gone quiet?" On the other end of the video call, an oblivious Caleb Lowell asked.

Jane Lancaster couldn’t help but sigh. ’Now, this one is the true chosen one, the ultimate winner in life. Blessed with health, wealth, and beauty, he’ll live a happy and peaceful life into old age.’

Everyone present simultaneously turned their gaze to Caleb Lowell on the screen.

Is that so? That’s really enough to make anyone envious and resentful.

Caleb Lowell felt that the way everyone was looking at him was a bit off. He could dismiss the others, but why was his cousin’s gaze also so strange?

"I guess everyone just wants to live a long life," Jane Lancaster said with a smile, walking to the side with her phone.

’So that’s what it is.’

Caleb Lowell stared at the smiling face on the screen, his voice deepening. "Jay, I just want you to be the one who lives a long life."

’You won’t be thinking that for long,’ Jane Lancaster retorted silently in her mind.

The two of them hadn’t video-called in a long time, and Caleb Lowell found that he missed her more than he’d expected. He couldn’t help but want to talk with her a little longer.

Jane Lancaster saw an assistant appear behind him and said with a smile, "Zion, you should get back to work. Bye."

She hung up the video call without a second thought.

Caleb Lowell: "..."

"President Lowell, the meeting is ready," the assistant stepped forward to remind him.

Caleb Lowell glanced at his watch. Indeed, there were only ten minutes left before the meeting.

Just as he stood up, his phone rang.

When Chloe Dave got the call from Caleb Lowell, he quickly scrambled upright, all his previous listlessness gone.

Zion had asked him to check what Claire Sheffield did at the hospital on the 30th and who he came into contact with...

’Holy shit, wasn’t that the day of the stabbing incident!’

He had gone to pick up Luna Morgan from the hospital. They had already found a restaurant and were about to eat, but they ended up turning back halfway.

After hanging up, he started looking into Claire Sheffield’s movements that day, but he quickly found he couldn’t proceed.

The few people looking into it for him were all gently but firmly rebuffed. They said it was impossible—information about Claire Sheffield was off-limits.

After some digging, Chloe Dave found out that an internationally renowned team of brain experts had come to Aethelan Hospital today, and the leading brain specialist was actually Claire Sheffield’s esteemed mentor.

’Considering that, it’s understandable why they wouldn’t allow anyone to investigate Claire Sheffield.’

But he had to get Zion’s task done. Chloe Dave thought for a moment, and then it hit him!

’The orderly Luna saved, doesn’t he know Claire Sheffield? He’s been an orderly at the hospital for over a decade and knows everyone, from top to bottom. His network is huge. It should be a piece of cake to get some information from him.’

Chloe Dave hurriedly got the phone number from Luna Morgan and made the call.

After finishing the call, he felt completely enlightened.

"Okay, Uncle Clark, thank you so much! You just rest up at the hospital. I’ll come visit you in a few days."

As soon as he hung up, he immediately dialed Caleb Lowell’s number without a moment’s hesitation.

"Zion, let me tell you, the person Claire Sheffield went to the hospital to see that day was Jane Lancaster!"

Chloe Dave was frantic. Zion had specifically asked him to investigate Claire Sheffield, so he must have discovered something.

’I’m completely shocked. How could that woman be so bold? She already has Zion, yet she still dares to flirt with other men.’

’The key thing is, that Dr. Sheffield is one of Jane Lancaster’s attending physicians. Could they have been making eyes at each other and hooking up four months ago?’

’The doctor-patient dynamic does make it easier for romantic feelings to develop...’

"Zion, she’s gone too far! Claire Sheffield wasn’t even supposed to be working that day, but she insisted on calling him to the hospital."

’If they wanted a secret rendezvous, couldn’t they have picked another place? To actually go to the hospital!’

Caleb Lowell’s heart sank. "She was the one who called Claire Sheffield to the hospital?"

’I went through all that trouble to rearrange his shift and avoid the bloodshed, but I never thought she would ruin it all so easily.’

He raised a hand and massaged his temples. "Did Jay have any contact with the suspect that day?"

Chloe Dave was stunned for a moment. She actually had. "Zion, how did you know? Half an hour before the incident, as the suspect was about to leave the hospital, he bumped into Jane Lancaster."

"Just because the guy knocked her bag onto the wet ground, Jane Lancaster opened her mouth and demanded 110,000 in compensation from him..."

"Alright, that’s enough!" Caleb Lowell cut him off.

Chloe Dave grew anxious. "Zion, the stabbing incident is related to Jane Lancaster! She’s the one who escalated the conflict, she was the last straw that broke the camel’s back..."

"Shut up!"

Chloe Dave jumped in shock. Zion rarely got this angry. Even through the phone, he could feel his rage.

"Don’t you tell anyone about this, do you hear me?" Caleb Lowell’s voice was frighteningly cold.

Chloe Dave: "...I-I hear you."

After hanging up, Caleb Lowell sat in his office for a couple of minutes.

Before he left Stratton, he had hoped Jane Lancaster would intervene in this matter. But now that she actually had, the consequences were even harder for him to bear than he’d imagined.

If she had simply ignored it, perhaps it would have been because she didn’t want to get involved in the karma of it all.

But she just had to intervene. Knowing full well who the suspect was, she provoked him, causing the stabbing incident to happen ahead of schedule.

She did save Claire Sheffield, sparing him from being seriously injured and falling into a coma. But in his place, three other innocent people ended up in the ICU.

He didn’t actually suspect that there was anything going on between Jane Lancaster and Claire Sheffield.

He just knew that the president of the company he was about to have a meeting with had revealed a piece of information to him yesterday: Old President Lewis of the Lewis Family had an illegitimate son working at Aethelan Hospital.

That person was Claire Sheffield.

The matter was kept a tight secret. After all, Old President Lewis and his wife were known in their social circles as a model couple deeply in love. For an illegitimate son in his thirties to suddenly appear when they were in their seventies and eighties wasn’t just a slap in the face to the old madam, but to their legitimate son and daughter as well.

The man had also instructed him that you could count the number of people who knew about this on one hand, reminding him not to spread it around.

Caleb Lowell, however, felt that since Jane Lancaster could predict future events, it wouldn’t be strange for her to know Claire Sheffield’s true identity.

And coincidentally, the Lancaster Family was facing a bottleneck in their overseas expansion, but the Lewis Family had connections that could clear the way.

Back then, Jane Lancaster had always paid close attention to Julian Lanscaster’s career. She wasn’t very social, but she never missed the various galas and banquets during the New Year.

She would use her youthful ignorance as an excuse to rush up and chat with business magnates that even he wasn’t qualified to approach.

She proactively helped Julian Lanscaster expand his network.

"Of course I have to help my big brother. I’m his biggest shareholder. Only if he makes money can I get a bigger cut," the young girl had once replied, all smiles.

’So, Jay, was it all to help your big brother that you orchestrated this whole thing to make Claire Sheffield owe you a life-saving debt?’
