Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Lancaster Family Is Completely Unqualified as the Patient’s Family
Alvin Lancaster stood at the sink, washing his hands while lost in thought.
Someone walked up beside him. He glanced up, and their eyes met. They were two kindred spirits in misery.
"Dr. Sheffield," Alvin Lancaster greeted him hastily.
Claire Sheffield nodded in acknowledgment, his attitude slightly cold and distant.
Alvin Lancaster had noticed long ago that this Dr. Sheffield treated his sister differently than he treated the rest of them.
Fortunately, the difference wasn’t too obvious, so he didn’t take it personally. After all, a doctor’s responsibility is to the patient, not their family.
But today, the contrast was a little too stark.
Just moments ago, he had been laughing and joking with everyone...
"Do you need something?" Claire Sheffield had finished washing his hands and was about to leave, but after a moment’s thought, he managed to ask patiently.
The young man looked like he was hesitating to speak. In the past, Claire would have simply turned and walked away.
"Yes, yes!" Alvin Lancaster said. "Dr. Sheffield, I wanted to ask you, what kind of cancer makes you spit up blood? Also, how can you screen for and prevent it?"
He didn’t dare dismiss his sister’s inner thoughts, not after his own broken bone served as a cautionary tale.
Besides, there was another living example right here... His gaze fell on Claire Sheffield’s bandaged hand.
Even though Claire Sheffield hadn’t been scheduled to work that day, fate had still pushed him back to the hospital, where he was stabbed in the hand by an assailant.
"Spitting up blood? Who’s spitting up blood?" Claire Sheffield’s expression turned much more serious. This was no small matter.
Seeing the misunderstanding, Alvin Lancaster quickly waved his hands. "No, no, nobody’s spitting up blood."
He paused before explaining, "It’s just that... I feel like my older brother works too hard. He never takes a day off and often pulls all-nighters. On top of that, he has to worry about family matters. With my sister being in poor health, he has to worry about her food, clothing, housing, transportation, mental health, and even her social life..."
Perhaps the eldest child in a family always works the hardest, yet their efforts go unnoticed.
Alvin Lancaster just wished his older brother could be happier and more carefree, without such a heavy burden on his shoulders.
He had no problem with his older brother doting on their sister; what he couldn’t stand was how his sister took it all for granted.
His sister had already received more than enough affection. Why couldn’t she show some concern for her older brother in return?
She clearly knew their older brother would spit up blood and get cancer, yet she remained a cold bystander, not offering a single word of concern.
Just thinking about it was disheartening.
Claire Sheffield frowned, his tone turning cold. "You should be asking your family doctor about this, or perhaps consult the oncology department."
Alvin Lancaster felt a bit awkward. He had been acting out of desperation. "I’m sorry, Dr. Sheffield..."
"Also," Claire Sheffield wasn’t finished, "how many sisters does the Lancaster Family have?"
"Huh?" Alvin Lancaster was confused. What kind of question was that?
"Then it seems there’s only one," Claire Sheffield said coolly. "So, for someone who only came back to stay for a few days after his sister woke up from a coma, how exactly does he show his concern for her?"
"Did he ever help turn her over? Give her a single massage? Feed her a single meal? Spend a single night by her side?"
’...’ ’What’s going on? This Dr. Sheffield suddenly seems terrifying,’ Alvin Lancaster thought. He explained in a small voice, "My older brother was just too busy with work back then, and besides, it was Jay who told him to go abroad without worrying..."
If it weren’t for that, how could his older brother have borne to leave?
Claire Sheffield’s expression soured even more. "She was so weak back then she couldn’t even sit up. Even I couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t lapse back into a coma. And just because she told your brother not to worry, he actually felt at ease?"
Alvin Lancaster was so scared he didn’t dare say a word.
"Don’t ever talk about ’worrying’ about your sister again. As far as I’m concerned, the Lancaster Family is completely unqualified as a patient’s family."
After saying this, Claire Sheffield walked out.
He stepped outside, took out his phone, and made a call. "I’ve done what you asked me to do."
"Thank you. I owe you one," Jasper Sterling said solemnly on the other end of the line.
"No need. I was planning on doing it anyway," Claire Sheffield said before hanging up.
The elders in his family all thought very highly of the young man, unanimously praising him. They felt he was steady and pragmatic, yet also cunning, and what was rare was that he still had an excellent reputation.
They felt that since he trusted Jasper Sterling, he might as well do him a favor. Perhaps the two of them could become friends.
But Claire Sheffield didn’t want to take advantage of the situation.
He knew that wealthy families always prioritized benefits; sentiment was often worthless. He had seen every form of callousness and indifference by the sickbed, so he was never resentful.
But if you’re going to chase after benefits, don’t parade yourself as someone who values relationships and loyalty. That’s just too hypocritical.
—
Jasper Sterling stared at the disconnected call, not particularly bothered.
Of course he would remember the favor. He wouldn’t dismiss it just because the other party was cold.
He picked up his phone and sent a message: [Senior, congratulations on your full recovery. How about we have dinner tonight to celebrate?]
Of course, there was no reply. He smiled, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Now that the test results were out today, she was most likely busy sharing the happy news with Caleb Lowell.
Previously, the Lowell Family had voiced some complaints about the engagement party, feeling they shouldn’t get engaged while Jane Lancaster’s condition was still uncertain. They could have easily delayed it.
It was Caleb Lowell who had insisted on it, and with a push from Jasper himself behind the scenes, they had barely managed to move forward with the engagement party.
Uncle Lynn came in with a tray of tea. "Young Master, have some tea."
Holding the tray, he said in a steady voice, "This is wonderful. Now that Miss Lancaster is fine, the dissenting voices from the Lowell Family will surely disappear."
Jasper Sterling lowered his eyes and sipped his tea, ignoring him.
Uncle Lynn continued, "Of course, even if they don’t, it doesn’t matter. You’d surely crush them with a single wave."
Jasper Sterling lowered his gaze to the tea in his hand, a hint of warmth gradually appearing in his charming eyes.
Uncle Lynn added, "Someone else’s fiancée... of course, it’s always more interesting to snatch away what belongs to someone else. Wouldn’t you agree?"
Jasper Sterling finally glanced up at him. "Don’t talk nonsense. I don’t have any ’special’ kinks. By the way, this green tea is good. I’ll drink this from now on."
He had recently had a change in preference; he’d suddenly developed a taste for green tea.
Uncle Lynn knew in his heart this was probably related to that Miss Lancaster again.
"Young Master Lancaster has notified the hotel that they’re checking out. They’ll probably be returning to the Lancaster estate tonight," he couldn’t help but mention.
Seeing the light in Jasper Sterling’s eyes gradually turn cold, he couldn’t help but sigh.
The phone on the table suddenly chimed. It was a message from Jane Lancaster.
[Not today. I’m busy.]
Jasper Sterling suddenly chuckled. "What does that matter? Worst comes to worst, I’ll just go to the Lancaster estate right now, snatch her, and hide her away."
Being able to see her every day recently had probably caused the greed in his heart to grow wildly. Wanting to see her daily turned into wanting to see her constantly, and if this continued, he might not want to be apart from her for even a single second.
’No wonder she was so resolute in rejecting my advances before. After all, I’m really not a good person.’
Many people praised him for being modest and polite, never as unreasonable as Caleb Lowell. But in reality, he was even more domineering and unreasonable than Caleb Lowell at his core.
Uncle Lynn sucked in a sharp breath. Looking at his young master, who had a touch of madness about him, he thought, ’So he really does have special kinks!’
DING-DONG. Another message arrived.
[I’ll treat you to dinner another day.]
"So, are you still going to snatch her now?" Uncle Lynn asked, studying his young master’s expression.
Jasper Sterling managed to suppress the corner of his lips from turning up. "What snatching? I’m just a CEO, not a tyrant."
