Chapter 53: Chapter 53: I’m Afraid My Big Brother Is a Doting King
He had a naturally fair complexion and exquisite, handsome features, yet his presence wasn’t the least bit weak. On the contrary, he gave off an inviolable aura.
Not to mention, Jasper Sterling himself was undeniably outstanding. His grades in school left everyone in the dust, and after taking power, he had multiplied The Sterling Group’s performance several times over.
The term "pretty boy" didn’t fit Jasper Sterling at all, did it?
But she couldn’t really refute her boyfriend. "I guess women are drawn to power. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have liked my cousin."
Back in school, Caleb Lowell was also the school tyrant type—a great fighter, just a bit more restrained than Gordon Dawson. His grades were better than Gordon’s, too.
After all, he didn’t have to struggle to make ends meet, unlike Gordon Dawson, who had to rely on his fists to protect himself and his family.
Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for him.
"Don’t worry, I won’t go see Jane Lancaster privately anymore."
She knew he hated Jane Lancaster and had always been against her associating with Jane.
Gordon Dawson frowned. "Who said you shouldn’t see Jane Lancaster? You two are good friends. Doing that all of a sudden wouldn’t be right. It would make you seem heartless."
Seeing Pauline Shaw stunned, he smiled and reached out to pinch her cheek.
"Silly, I’m just thinking of you. You said yourself that Julian Lanscaster misunderstands and thinks you’ll harm her. If you draw a line now, it will only deepen the misunderstanding. Then you’ll be unhappy, and I’ll be the one who has to cheer you up, won’t I?"
Pauline Shaw felt that he had a point.
Even if she despised Jane Lancaster’s ruthlessness, she couldn’t bring herself to cruelly cut ties with her immediately.
"Aren’t you afraid Jane Lancaster will turn me against you?" she couldn’t help but ask.
Gordon Dawson raised an eyebrow. "I used to be, but now you’re all mine. What’s there to be afraid of?"
He had always been confident in his own charm; the only thing he feared was Jane Lancaster sowing discord.
Fortunately, times had changed. The old Jane Lancaster was a genius in everyone’s eyes, with excellent grades and outstanding abilities. Now, however, she had all but degenerated into a nobody, left far behind by the times.
If she didn’t have her family’s wealth to fall back on, she probably would have had to find some man and hastily get married.
Instead of putting on airs and waiting for a wealthy family to propose to her.
—
Jane Lancaster went out for a stroll for half the day. When she returned, she saw Julian Lanscaster waiting for her at the hotel entrance.
He clearly wasn’t finished with work yet, as he was reading documents in the spare moments he had. After taking Jane Lancaster back to the villa, he went back to work.
She checked her Favorability score, which hadn’t budged, then looked at the Dislike value. Unexpectedly running into Pauline Shaw today had yielded no results.
Early the next morning, Jane Lancaster was still thinking about this problem.
"Sys, do you think my big brother might be an AI?" ’Would a normal person have such a high tolerance for their little sister?’
’Even a birth mother doesn’t dote on her child 24/7. When it’s time to get annoyed, you get annoyed.’
She was muttering to herself in her head when a hand came to rest on top of her head.
Sys: [...Host, please do not joke.]
’Holy shit, it almost couldn’t resist running a full-body scan on Julian Lanscaster.’
’And does he not make a sound when he walks? He just appeared out of nowhere!’
Jane Lancaster was clearly much calmer than the system. She turned her head, smiled, and greeted him, "Big Brother, morning. Are you done with work?"
’Why does he love patting my head so much? Does it make him feel taller?’
’The problem is, I’m tall too. Isn’t it a pain for him to pat my head? Doesn’t he think it looks incredibly awkward?’
Julian Lanscaster: "..."
’I forgot my little sister isn’t a child anymore. This kind of affection isn’t really appropriate now.’
"I’m done for now." Julian Lanscaster paused, then added, "It’s getting late. We should head to the hospital."
Jane Lancaster had been told last night that she needed to go for a follow-up appointment today.
Julian Lanscaster had specifically invited a team of experts from abroad to give Jane Lancaster a comprehensive examination.
Alvin Lancaster had also come. He had been on edge these past few days. His big brother had finally returned to the country, but what was this about him staying in a hotel with their sister all day instead of coming home?
The night he found out, he had rushed to the hotel... only to be stopped outside.
Not only that, but his big brother had cruelly refused to see him, telling him to reflect carefully on what he had done wrong.
This made Alvin Lancaster even more panicked... Although in the Lancaster Family their father’s word was law, he was more afraid of his gentle and refined big brother.
After all, his father had always been strict, and he would still rebel when he felt he should... though his rebellions were always ruthlessly crushed by his father without making a single ripple.
But his big brother was different. He had been raised by his big brother’s own hands, so he naturally worshipped and felt close to him.
During those dark, hopeless days in the countryside, it was his big brother who had held up the sky for him and their younger brother.
His big brother would never curse him out at the drop of a hat or look down on him for not being smart. On the contrary, he would always gently clean up his messes and comfort him, telling him not to take it to heart.
This was the first time he’d ever been so cold, refusing to even see him.
After several days of reflection, Alvin Lancaster had grown visibly thinner, and his casted ankle was also aching badly.
But he didn’t dare say anything. When his big brother let him in, he just silently entered on his crutches.
Jane Lancaster thought of the 0.0000001% Favorability score and also said nothing.
Lucy Finch found it strange. Why was the atmosphere so odd when the siblings met?
"Oh, right, Young Master, you said yesterday you had something to discuss. What was it?" She assumed it was something minor and asked casually.
Julian Lanscaster’s expression was indifferent. "Regarding Calvin Cole, I’ll be issuing an appointment soon, promoting him to Vice President of Concordia."
Lucy Finch was astonished. "But didn’t we have a meeting with Director Lancaster? The company is tightening its cash flow, and we’re supposed to cut Concordia’s land acquisition projects for the second half of the year, right?"
Previously, with the rapid development of the domestic real estate market, Concordia, as the company’s real estate division, had shown impressive performance growth.
But since the beginning of this year, Concordia’s debt ratio had started to skyrocket...
Although it was partly related to the long profit cycle of real estate, perceptive people had already sensed the grim situation.
Timothy Lancaster had already decided to hit the emergency brakes and shut down most of Concordia’s branch companies.
Appointing Calvin Cole there at a time like this was definitely not a sign of favor... Lucy Finch’s heart skipped a beat, and she looked up at Julian Lanscaster.
"You need to take over his responsibilities as soon as possible. I’m only giving you six months," Julian Lanscaster said.
Six months was enough time to completely sideline Calvin Cole. Then, kicking him out of the company would pose no risk.
Lucy Finch: "...I understand, President Lancaster."
After Lucy Finch left, Alvin Lancaster couldn’t help but press, "Big Brother, why?"
He couldn’t help but shift his gaze to Jane Lancaster, suspecting his sister had done something again.
Jane Lancaster was also reflecting, wondering if she had gone too far this time.
’What’s going on? I just wanted to sow a little discord, to speed up the part where they turn on each other.’
’Calvin Cole shouldn’t have had time to do anything yet. What is Julian Lanscaster’s game?’
"Big Brother, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have deliberately messed up the meeting that day. Actually, Special Assistant Cole arrived more than an hour early. I was the one who deliberately made him wait."
Jane Lancaster decided to try a softer approach first, actively putting in a good word for Calvin Cole.
Julian Lanscaster sounded helpless. "Jay, don’t take the blame on yourself." It was clear he didn’t believe her.
Jane Lancaster: "..."
’Is my big brother some kind of fatuous king?!’
