Chapter 52: Chapter 52: I’m Probably Destined to Have No Merit in This Life

In the end, Gordon Dawson still couldn’t rest easy, worried that Jane Lancaster would turn Pauline Shaw against him.

The woman was dangerously persuasive, and he had to be on his guard.

The door to the private room was open a crack. Just as he walked over, he heard voices from inside.

"Don’t say any more. I know you love him. I know all about it!"

Realizing Pauline Shaw hadn’t been swayed in the slightest, a great weight was finally lifted from his chest.

’I knew it,’ he thought. ’How could someone as charming as me not even be able to handle one woman?’

He looked at Pauline Shaw with a teasing expression. ’Why does she look so startled? Is she afraid I’ll find out she’s head over heels for me?’

Jane Lancaster’s voice continued, "I know you can’t leave him! In this relationship, you may seem to have the upper hand, but in reality, you’re the one who’s been brought down to the dust."

"Gordon Dawson may not come from a good family, but he’s loyal and straightforward, hardworking and resilient, and adaptable. He also has a great head for business. He has a ton of potential."

"In fact, the Shaw Family is lucky to have you with him. Neither you nor your father are capable of propping up the massive Shaw family enterprise, but Gordon Dawson is."

"Right now, he’s just a diamond in the rough. Just give him some time, and he’ll definitely become one of the biggest names in the business world, proving everyone who looks down on him wrong."

"And you? Other than having rich parents, you can’t do anything yourself, and your temper isn’t the best. That’s why you always feel like you’re not good enough for him, right?"

’Everything I said is true, you know. Look how sincere I am, clearing all the obstacles from your path to true love.’

Pauline Shaw came back to her senses and pressed her lips together.

Most of what Jane Lancaster said was right. Pauline had never believed Gordon Dawson would be stuck in a rut forever, and she had always been keenly aware of how exceptional he was.

Back in high school, all she did was bury her nose in books, so she’d found herself drawn to a free and spontaneous spirit like Gordon Dawson’s.

Deep down, she had always felt that Gordon was more exceptional than she was.

’But why did those words sound so jarring coming from Jane Lancaster?’

’What did she mean I wasn’t good enough for him? That I couldn’t prop up the Shaw family enterprise? Was I really that pathetic?’

She could have let her own part slide, but for Jane to say that her father couldn’t prop up the family business either!

Although Pauline Shaw often resented her parents’ domineering ways, she had idolized her father, a business tycoon, since she was a little girl.

Gordon Dawson was very capable, but he was still young. She refused to even compare the two of them.

"Okay, that’s enough," Pauline Shaw said, quickly changing the subject.

Regardless, what Jane Lancaster had just done really did help her.

Gordon Dawson still held a grudge about her dumping him back in high school. If he’d heard what she’d been about to say, he would have gotten angry all over again.

Only then did Jane Lancaster turn around, feigning surprise as if she had just noticed Gordon Dawson. "You were outside?"

This was the first time Gordon Dawson had ever really looked at her.

She had been famous in high school, and he had tagged along with friends to catch a glimpse of the so-called "number one socialite."

She was undeniably beautiful, but her high-and-mighty attitude rubbed him the wrong way, which made her beauty far less appealing.

After her illness, she wasn’t as stunning as she used to be, but her pale, gaunt appearance gave her a rather pitiable air.

Gordon Dawson watched her for a moment before calling out to Pauline Shaw, "Babe, are you ready to go?"

Pauline Shaw walked over and took the arm he offered.

Just as they were about to leave, Gordon Dawson paused thoughtfully.

"Pauline seems independent on the surface, but deep down, she’s still just a little girl. She’s always trusted you, so I hope you’ll continue to give her guidance in the future."

Jane Lancaster froze for a second, then quickly put on a professional smile. "Of course."

Gordon Dawson glanced at her a few more times before finally turning and leaving with Pauline Shaw.

Jane Lancaster was also happy. The two of them had finally resolved their conflict; they would probably go home and pour their hearts out to each other now.

"What are you smiling so happily about?" Jasper Sterling asked, walking over from the side.

Jane Lancaster’s smile vanished. She glanced at him. "What impeccable timing."

"Not a coincidence. I came back a while ago," Jasper Sterling said, looking perfectly amiable. "I just saw that the mood was good, so I decided not to come out and spoil it."

’So you are self-aware after all.’

’It was because you ran your mouth that Pauline Shaw almost started to doubt their relationship!’

Jane Lancaster offered a sincere suggestion, "Young Master Sterling, it’s better to tear down ten temples than to ruin a single marriage. You shouldn’t meddle in other couples’ affairs in the future. It’s bad for your karma."

Jasper Sterling chuckled and lowered his gaze. "Point taken. Thank you for the reminder."

Jane Lancaster felt there was something unreadable about his smile.

Before she could figure it out, Jasper Sterling added, "But I’m afraid I’m destined to live a life devoid of good karma."

’Give her up? Dream on!’

"..." Jane Lancaster gave a hollow laugh. "Let’s go."

’He’s trying to say he’ll never give up on stealing me from Caleb Lowell, isn’t he? Why do young guys have to be so stubborn!’

Jasper Sterling: "..."

"However, I have a word of warning for you, too," Jasper said, his tone shifting as his expression grew serious. "Stay away from that guy."

Jane Lancaster was confused, but she nodded anyway.

’He’s right. Gordon Dawson holds grudges. The Shaw family looked down on him, so he plotted their bankruptcy. And as for me, I’m the one who ’broke him up’ with Pauline Shaw back in the day, so he despises me.’

’He’s not going to give up on his revenge just because I said a few nice things about him.’

A cold glint appeared in Jasper Sterling’s alluring eyes.

But that wasn’t his reason. The real reason was that the final look Gordon Dawson had given Jane Lancaster was deeply unsettling.

He had been calling Pauline Shaw "babe," but his eyes were fixed on Jane Lancaster. Anyone who didn’t know the situation would have thought he was talking to Jane.

To be honest, in that instant, he’d had the overwhelming urge to gouge the man’s eyes out.

---

Pauline Shaw sat in the passenger seat, turning her head to look at Gordon Dawson.

Their hands were clasped together, and love flowed between them as their gazes met.

She liked Gordon Dawson’s assertiveness, but she also cherished these rare moments of tenderness.

"What, had your fill of looking?" Gordon Dawson asked with a smile. "Like what you see?"

Pauline Shaw nodded. His good looks were an objective fact.

Gordon Dawson let go of her hand to start the car. As they were leaving the parking garage, he saw the car ahead of them, and the smile vanished from his face.

Pauline Shaw followed his gaze. "That’s Young Master Sterling’s car."

Of course Gordon Dawson knew it was Jasper Sterling’s car—a custom Maybach that cost over ten million.

And Jasper Sterling had several luxury cars just like it.

In comparison, the car he was driving had been a gift from the Shaw family to Pauline, costing just over a million. It was nothing next to the Maybach.

"Don’t overthink it," Pauline Shaw said, assuming he was still bothered by Jasper Sterling’s earlier words.

Gordon Dawson suddenly asked, "How did Jane Lancaster get mixed up with Jasper Sterling? Didn’t you say they were mortal enemies?"

Pauline Shaw replied, "Jasper Sterling is probably the one pursuing her. Jay has never really liked him."

"Mm, she never did like pretty boys," Gordon Dawson said, narrowing his eyes.

He had heard bits and pieces about Jane Lancaster from Pauline Shaw, so he knew she had kept her distance from Jasper Sterling back in high school.

Pauline Shaw was baffled. How on earth did Jasper Sterling qualify as a "pretty boy"?
