Chapter 37: Chapter 37: So This Is My NPC Big Brother?
Luna Morgan made up her mind. "Since Miss Lynch won’t say anything and Pauline won’t either, then it’s entirely possible that Miss Lancaster is completely unaware."
"How could she possibly not know?" Chloe Dave pointed at Jane Lancaster. "Look at her! Does she look like she’s unaware?"
Jane Lancaster: "..."
This was awkward. She actually managed to dredge up that very memory from her mind.
Jane Lancaster’s expression didn’t change. Poised and frank, she said, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
’Stay calm. Don’t panic. Luna Morgan will definitely believe me over him!’
Just as expected, Luna Morgan shook her head. "Chloe, you’re misunderstanding Miss Lancaster. She really is unaware."
Chloe Dave was frantic. "Luna, she’s just manipulating you! Don’t fall for it!"
"She’s a total ’white lotus’—deeply calculating and completely unscrupulous! Compared to her, Beverly Lynch is amateur hour, okay?"
"She snatched the necklace to twist the knife in Beverly Lynch, put you in your place, and then make you feel eternally grateful to her! It’s killing three birds with one stone!"
Jane Lancaster stared at the finger that was nearly poking her in the nose.
’Excellent. You’re dead. Your dad’s dead. Your whole family is going to die.’
As Chloe Dave grew more agitated, his waving hand nearly slapped Jane Lancaster across the face.
With a sharp SMACK, Jane Lancaster slapped his hand away. There was no need to be polite with someone so rude. She’d used all her strength.
Chloe Dave snatched his hand back in pain, staring in disbelief. "You hit me?"
And it really, really hurt. He felt like his hand was about to break!
As the pampered youngest son of his family, Chloe Dave had never been hit by a girl before—especially not by a woman he looked down upon. His anger flared instantly.
"That’s going too far! Even my mom and Zion have never laid a hand on me! Apologize! You have to apologize to me!!"
At his shout, Jane Lancaster covered her face, her eyes instantly turning red.
Her body began to tremble, and she looked as if she were about to collapse.
"Miss Lancaster!" Luna Morgan, terrified, rushed over to support Jane Lancaster. "Are you alright?"
She turned and admonished Chloe Dave, "Miss Lancaster still hasn’t recovered. She just fainted a few days ago! How could you scream at her like that?"
Furious, Chloe Dave stepped forward to grab Jane Lancaster’s arm. "She’s definitely faking it!"
But just as he gave her a tug, his own arm was seized.
The man in the white suit had a gentle, refined air, but his face was now an icy mask. He grabbed Chloe Dave’s arm and, with a powerful shove, sent him sprawling to the floor.
"Eldest Young Master..." Luna Morgan murmured.
Jane Lancaster was just about to raise her head when she was suddenly pulled into a broad embrace.
The scent of a woody cologne washed over her—fresh, elegant, and subtle.
His movements were gentle and careful, and his voice, as clear and pleasant as the man himself, asked, "Jay, are you alright?"
Jane Lancaster opened her eyes to meet his concerned gaze. "Brother."
Julian Lanscaster, the eldest son of the Lancaster family, had appeared out of nowhere, without a single word of warning.
He was different from the man in the original owner’s memories. This Julian Lanscaster’s aura was more mature and gentle, but also more distant and cold.
Even with his reserved personality, he possessed the natural authority of someone in power—intimidating without ever showing anger.
’So this is my NPC-like brother? If his eyes are working, he should have seen what just happened, right?’
A flurry of approaching footsteps was heard, and someone cried out in alarm, "Eldest Miss! Oh my god, what’s happening?"
Julian Lanscaster glanced coldly at Chloe Dave. "Seize him."
Two bodyguards immediately moved forward, twisting Chloe Dave’s arms behind his back and forcing him to the ground.
When Calvin Cole rushed over, his heart sank. He quickly squeezed through the crowd. "Young Master, this is the young master of the Dave family. Could there be some kind of misunderstanding?"
After all, Chloe Dave was the young master of the Dave family, and more importantly, Caleb Lowell’s best friend. He was one of their own; they couldn’t afford to offend him like this.
"There’s no misunderstanding. I saw him hit Jay with my own eyes." Julian Lanscaster was unmoved.
He certainly recognized the young master of the Dave family. But to dare lay a hand on Jay? Who gave him the nerve.
Jane Lancaster was a bit surprised. ’Wait, which of your eyes saw that? Don’t tell me you saw it in a dream?’
’I figured he’d be protective of his own, but I didn’t expect him to tell such a bald-faced lie.’
’Now I get it. Behind every spoiled brat, there’s a doting parent who’s completely blind to their faults.’
Julian Lanscaster: "..."
He raised a hand and helplessly pressed the bridge of his nose. The flight of over ten hours hadn’t tired him, but now he seemed to be having auditory hallucinations for no reason.
"I didn’t do it!" Chloe Dave yelled furiously. "She was the one who hit—"
Before he could finish, a bodyguard clapped a hand over his mouth. He could only make muffled, angry noises, his eyes glaring in protest.
Luna Morgan couldn’t bear to watch. "Young Master, he didn’t do it on purpose. Could you please let him go?"
"You dare to bargain with me?" Julian Lanscaster lifted his gaze to her. "When he went after Jay, what were you doing?"
Luna Morgan’s breath hitched. "...I’m sorry."
’Is their relationship this angsty, too? Oh, right. When my brother left all those years ago, he made Luna Morgan promise to take good care of me.’
’The heartless capitalist even forced her to sign a contract, which he used as leverage against her later on!’
Jane Lancaster had no choice but to "recover." "Brother, I’m alright now. Let him go."
"Eldest Miss, you don’t need to show any courtesy to people like him," Lucy Finch said, assuming Jane was worried about Caleb Lowell’s reputation.
She was another one of Julian Lanscaster’s trusted aides and had spent the last year abroad with him, expanding the business.
Unlike the cautious Calvin Cole, Lucy Finch was decisive and direct, never afraid to step on toes.
Jane Lancaster said, "Lucy, I’m really fine. My brother has only just returned; I don’t want him to waste his energy on something so trivial."
When Julian Lanscaster didn’t respond, she walked over and pulled the bodyguard’s hand away herself.
More footsteps approached from behind. By the time Jane Lancaster was done, she turned around to see a large crowd had gathered.
At the front of the crowd were several familiar faces.
Pauline Shaw frowned, looking toward Luna Morgan. "What’s going on?"
Before Luna Morgan could answer, Beverly Lynch sneered. "What else could it be? He tried to hit Jane Lancaster and was caught red-handed by Julian."
She had noticed the commotion before Pauline Shaw did and had overheard Julian Lanscaster’s accusation as she was walking over.
No one doubted Julian Lanscaster’s word, and at this, even Pauline Shaw fell silent.
Standing beside Beverly Lynch was an unfamiliar young man—her new boyfriend.
Upon hearing this, his face filled with disdain. "He hits women? That’s completely classless."
The others also began pointing and murmuring amongst themselves.
"I never would have guessed. Isn’t Chloe Dave usually so arrogant? I didn’t expect him to be so violent."
"That’s because you don’t know him. In middle school, he was a total delinquent, always fighting and never studying."
"I’m not surprised he’d hit someone, but I am surprised he’d dare to hit Jane Lancaster?"
"Exactly! Is he crazy? Jane Lancaster is Young Master Lowell’s fiancée!"
"You can know a person’s face but not their heart. I’m staying far away from people like him from now on."
Chloe Dave was about to explode with rage. He was the one who’d been hit! How dare these people say such things about him?
"Jane Lancaster, stop with the crocodile tears! Tell them the truth! I never hit you—"
He was seeing red. The moment he was free, he lunged for Jane Lancaster, wanting to force her to set the record straight.
SMACK! The back of his hand was struck again.
Beverly Lynch glared at him fiercely. "What are you doing? Trying to hit her again?"
