Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Of Course, I’m Talking About the Eavesdropper

"Wait! I know this might be overstepping, but Miss Lancaster, could I please ask you not to make Mrs. Everett plant vegetables on the back hill?"

Luna Morgan finally called out after all.

She bit her lower lip, uneasy. "Mrs. Everett developed a chronic back problem after a miscarriage. Gardening is such hard work, I’m worried her back won’t be able to take it..."

Jane Lancaster stopped walking away and turned back to ask, "Who told you that?"

Afraid of being misunderstood, Luna Morgan quickly explained, "Mrs. Everett didn’t tell me! She didn’t say a thing!"

’Of course Mrs. Everett wouldn’t complain so directly. Otherwise, her little trip to the vegetable garden would have been all for nothing, wouldn’t it?’

Jane Lancaster said with a smile, "Since Mrs. Everett didn’t say anything, how do you know she doesn’t like gardening on the back hill?"

Her words left Luna Morgan bewildered. "Is that right? But who would actually enjoy gardening?"

"You can’t say that. It was my father who had someone start the small vegetable garden on the back hill, precisely because he enjoys gardening."

Jane Lancaster lied without batting an eye. "I guess when people reach a certain age, their true calling awakens. Mrs. Everett went to the garden on her own initiative, so she must be happy about getting to garden. If you ask me to move her from the garden, it might disrupt her plans."

’I might actually be doing a good deed here, helping Mrs. Everett and my father cultivate a shared hobby.’

’Late-in-life romance isn’t easy. How can it last without common topics of conversation? Mrs. Everett should be thanking me for giving her a helping hand.’

’Sigh, I’m such a great person!’

The System, which had been silently observing everything: ’...’

’You’re so good at spouting nonsense with a straight face!’

Luna Morgan still felt something wasn’t right, but when she looked up at Jane Lancaster’s expression, it was as poised and gracious as ever.

She didn’t feel it was right to say anything more. "I understand. Thank you, Miss Lancaster."

"You’re welcome. If you’re ever confused about anything in the future, feel free to come find me." Jane Lancaster flashed a gentle smile, like the big bad wolf tempting Little Red Riding Hood.

But someone, clearly, could not stand by and watch any longer.

"Who the hell likes to go plant vegetables? Jane Lancaster, who do you think you’re fooling?" Chloe Dave stepped out.

He had followed the two of them over, not originally planning to intervene, but just listen to what that woman was saying!

Luna was so innocent, kind, and trusting, but that wasn’t an excuse for her to be bullied.

Chloe Dave had a lot pent up inside; he’d been wanting to have a good talk with Jane Lancaster for a while now.

He figured that since he was a few years older than Jane Lancaster and was also Caleb Lowell’s good friend, he could certainly give her a few words of advice as an elder.

Chloe Dave mentally rehearsed his lines, deciding to start politely before getting tough. "Jane Lancaster, that was rather impolite..."

Jane Lancaster cut him off directly. "Were you just eavesdropping on us?"

Chloe Dave froze. Just as he was about to say something, Luna Morgan was already apologizing profusely.

"I’m sorry, Miss Lancaster, he didn’t mean to..."

Jane Lancaster: "It’s fine. Some people just have no class. It’s fundamentally an issue with their upbringing and has nothing to do with you."

Chloe Dave was completely taken aback that she would be so disrespectful. Suppressing his anger, he said, "Who are you saying has no class?"

"Whoever was eavesdropping, obviously. You either walk away or you step forward openly. Otherwise, what’s the difference between you and a rat in a sewer?"

Chloe Dave was furious now. "What gives you the right to insult me? I wasn’t eavesdropping on purpose!"

’She gets sick once and somehow becomes even more infuriating than before!’

’This is too much. Did she really just call me a sewer rat?’

Jane Lancaster: "If you don’t want to be insulted, don’t act like a creep. It’s so low-class. Who knows if you’ll escalate to being a peeping tom next?"

Chloe Dave: "Jane Lancaster!"

He had only wanted to teach Jane Lancaster a lesson, but before he could even get a word out, he was about to be driven insane with rage.

Luna Morgan pursed her lips. She felt Jane Lancaster was being a little too relentless today. Eavesdropping was wrong, but it didn’t warrant such a harsh condemnation.

"Miss Lancaster, Chloe Dave really must not have meant it. He’s usually very polite and gentlemanly, and he’s always very considerate of the women around him. He’s really not that kind of person."

Jane Lancaster shrugged. "Alright, I believe you."

"But you shouldn’t be so quick to trust people in the future. After all, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Some people might seem charming and elegant, but on the inside, they’re dark, twisted, and can’t stand the light of day."

’Maybe he’s part turtle or something. I’ve said all this, and he’s still holding it in?’

Chloe Dave, who was clearly not part turtle, completely blew up. "Jane Lancaster, *you’re* the one who’s dark and twisted!"

He had only been putting up with her for Zion’s sake. This was truly the last straw!

"You’re turning this back on me on purpose! Are you afraid I’ll expose how you just deceived Luna? Luna, don’t believe her! There’s no way Mrs. Everett volunteered to go gardening!"

Even though he didn’t know the full story, he could instinctively smell a conspiracy.

Luna Morgan: "Miss Lancaster wouldn’t lie to me."

Chloe Dave grew frantic. Luna was just too naive and kind! "She just stole your necklace! Have you forgotten?"

Luna Morgan subconsciously touched her bare neck. "That necklace was never mine to begin with."

"Then think about it carefully. If she were really so generous, why wouldn’t she wait until after the exhibition to get the necklace from the organizers? Why force you to take it off in front of everyone?"

"When celebrities wear jewelry that gets bought, are they immediately forced to take it off?"

"She was deliberately trying to humiliate you."

Luna Morgan just shook her head. "No, that’s not it. Back then, it was Miss Lynch who was trying to get the necklace. Miss Lancaster bought it to help me. Later, in the private room, she even told me I could keep wearing it."

Jane Lancaster, on the other hand, wasn’t very surprised.

’I said one thing offhand, and she actually thought I was helping her fight for the necklace?’

’Someone who got into Stratton University shouldn’t have any issues with their IQ. Is her judgment clouded because she feels she has to repay a debt?’

Seeing he couldn’t get through to her, Chloe Dave couldn’t help but sneer.

In that case, there was no need for him to help keep it a secret anymore. "Then did you know that she and Beverly Lynch are love rivals?"

Luna Morgan was stunned. "What?"

Chloe Dave: "Surprising, isn’t it? Beverly Lynch was almost Zion’s fiancée. But *she* swooped in and stole him away."

"Why do you think Pauline and Beverly Lynch are at each other’s throats every time they meet? Pauline is always doing it to defend her!"

"She’s really something else, isn’t she? Stealing someone else’s fiancé and then playing dumb about it."

"Pauline has taken the fall for her for years. Have you ever once seen her step up and clear Pauline’s name?"

Jane Lancaster, who had just been unexpectedly served a huge helping of gossip: "..."

"Impossible! Miss Lynch has a boyfriend, and she’s never said she likes Mr. Lowell," Luna Morgan retorted, instinctively defending Jane Lancaster.

Chloe Dave sneered. "Beverly Lynch is terrified of losing face. Why would she ever admit she got dumped? Of course she wouldn’t tell anyone. She’d just have to suffer in silence."

Jane Lancaster had to hand it to him. "Are you even listening to yourself right now?"

Chloe Dave: "What, are you going to deny it?"

"Caleb Lowell told me I’m his first love," Jane Lancaster said. "Are you suggesting Caleb was two-timing? That he was lying to me?"

"Don’t you dare make baseless accusations! Zion isn’t that kind of person!" Chloe Dave couldn’t stand anyone saying a single bad thing about Caleb Lowell.
