Chapter 25: Chapter 25: What Gives You the Right to Hit My Dad?
Jasper Sterling said with a ghost of a smile, "If you’re scared, you can just hold on tight to my neck."
Jane Lancaster chuckled. "I think I’ll pass on that."
She hooked her legs, trying to jump down. She failed on the first try, and the second was no different. Her fingers brushed against his arm, feeling the firm, hard muscle beneath. No wonder he remained perfectly still no matter how much she squirmed.
She gave up.
’In any case, if you can’t hold me and have to put me down halfway, I’ll be sure to laugh my head off!’
But she never got the chance. Even though the emergency building was several hundred meters from the outpatient building, Jasper Sterling didn’t show the slightest sign of strain. His arms remained as steady as ever.
"Thanks." Jane Lancaster quietly breathed a sigh of relief as they reached the emergency hall.
Jasper Sterling couldn’t help but smile, finding her subtle expression adorable.
’Okay, okay, I get it. You’re impressive. You’re really trying hard to steal me away from Caleb Lowell, huh?’
Jasper Sterling: "..."
"Miss!" Mama Knight rushed over. The moment she saw Jane Lancaster, tears started streaming down her face.
"You scared me to death! The driver found your purse, and I thought something terrible had happened to you!"
’I’m so stupid,’ she thought. ’I was so focused on getting my own check-up that I didn’t stay by Miss’s side.’
’Miss is so frail. What would I have done if something had happened to her!’
"I’m fine, Mama Knight. I just went outside to get some fresh air. When I realized I’d dropped my purse, I came back to look for it and unfortunately ran into the incident here."
Seeing that Mama Knight was still crying, Jane felt a little helpless.
"I was over by the floor-to-ceiling windows on the east side, looking at the city moat outside. The incident happened on the west side, so it was quite far away."
Elsewhere in the crowd, Alvin Lancaster also breathed a sigh of relief when he heard this.
He had rushed over as fast as he could. Given his limited mobility, he had only just arrived.
When he saw his sister was indeed in the emergency hall, his heart had nearly stopped in fright, mistakenly thinking she had come to intervene in the stabbing incident.
Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. It was all just a coincidence.
"Sir, should we go over?" the driver pushing his wheelchair asked.
"No." Alvin Lancaster refused without a second thought. He had only come out of familial concern. Since she was fine, there was no need for him to make an appearance.
After all, the two of them had already had a complete falling out. Why continue to put on a hypocritical show of deep sibling affection for each other?
’She probably doesn’t want to see me, either,’ he thought. ’After all, she’s still in the middle of running away from home, just waiting for our older brother to come back and stand up for her.’
He instructed the driver to push him back, but he suddenly heard a voice.
"Wait!" Alvin Lancaster called out.
He recognized the nurse. She was a good friend of Luna Morgan.
Luna Morgan had just called him. She’d said that her friend’s father had been seriously injured while saving someone and asked if Alvin could find them and help out a little.
Luna Morgan had sounded frantic over the phone. If Chloe Dave hadn’t stopped her, she would have rushed over herself.
Alvin didn’t want Luna to worry, so he decided to stay and see if there was any way he could help.
Zoe Carter averted her gaze, feeling a surge of irritation. ’I’ve run into that "Celestial" Miss again.’
’So annoying. She’s not even hurt, but just because she’s mentally weak, she has to come here, cause a scene, and waste medical resources.’
Hearing her father’s agonized cries, she soothed him in a low voice, "Dad, just hang in there. The pain will be gone soon."
"It hurts so much! It’s killing me!" Ethan Carter continued to cry out. ’Why am I so unlucky?’ he wondered.
Zoe Carter grasped his hand and said earnestly, "Dad, you were so brave. You’re incredible!"
She deliberately raised her voice. "You’ve always been someone with an overwhelming sense of justice. I should have expected it. While everyone else was scrambling to escape, you were the only one running against the crowd to save people."
"If you hadn’t rushed forward and blocked that blade, someone would have definitely died today. Dad, you’re my hero!"
The moment she’d realized something was wrong, she had called Ethan Carter.
The call didn’t go through, and she’d been worried for his safety, never imagining that he was in the middle of a heroic rescue.
When she later saw a photo of him lying in a pool of blood, her eyes had filled with tears.
She played the voice message Ethan Carter had sent out loud for everyone to hear.
"Sweetheart, your old dad didn’t pick up just now because I was busy saving a few people, that’s all..."
The people nearby were filled with awe. ’So this man who’s been crying in pain this whole time is actually a hero?’ they thought.
"Sir, you’re truly incredible!"
"Oh my god, a real hero is right here beside me! I need a picture to remember this." Someone whipped out their phone.
"You’ll definitely be interviewed by reporters soon! You’ll be a top trending story!"
"May a good man like you have a safe and peaceful life!"
Ethan Carter looked at all the smiling faces and gulped. Suddenly, he didn’t even feel the pain anymore.
"Oh, it was nothing, just doing what anyone would do," he said with a smile, greeting the crowd.
’Oh my god,’ he thought. ’With so many people taking photos and videos, am I about to get famous?’
’This is fantastic! I can start a livestream, sell some products, and tell everyone my heroic story. I’m sure tons of people will place orders!’
Ethan Carter was lost in fantasies of his impending wealth.
"By the way, Dr. Sheffield was badly injured, too. Was he also trying to save someone?" someone asked curiously.
Ethan Carter was displeased. He thought for a moment, then lowered his voice and said, "What? No, that guy was after Dr. Sheffield."
’I’m not about to let Claire Sheffield get all the attention for free,’ he thought. ’Of course, I have to strike first.’
’Besides, it’s not like I’m lying. If Claire Sheffield dares to compete with me for the spotlight, he can just wait for me to crush him!’
Many people were surprised and immediately asked if it was true.
Ethan Carter said, "Of course it’s true! The attacker’s wife cheated on him with a doctor from our hospital. He came here today to kill her lover. Want to take a guess who it is?"
The crowd was stunned. Was there any need to ask? It had to be Dr. Sheffield! But how could that be possible?
"It was you, of course," a voice interjected.
Ethan Carter didn’t immediately process that. "What?"
Jane Lancaster said, "I said, that man was clearly after you. You must have done something to offend him, which is why he came with a knife to get revenge."
’It’s just spreading rumors, isn’t it? As if I don’t know how to do that, too.’
Alvin Lancaster was stunned. ’Why is she spreading rumors about someone? Uncle Clark never did anything to her!’
"You’re spouting nonsense! What does this have to do with my dad?" Zoe Carter finally snapped back.
Although she didn’t believe the man was Dr. Sheffield, there was no way it could be her dad!
Jane Lancaster ignored her. Instead, she grabbed Ethan Carter by the collar and slapped him hard across the face.
Everyone was dumbfounded. What was this sudden turn of events?
Zoe Carter flew into a rage, lunging at Jane Lancaster to claw at her. "Bitch! What gives you the right to hit my dad?"
Jasper Sterling grabbed her by the wrist and shoved her backward.
Zoe Carter stumbled back several steps and only managed to stay upright when someone caught her.
Others nearby looked ready to rush forward, but Mama Knight snatched up an IV stand and held it protectively in front of her. "Who dares take another step!"
’I don’t know why Miss hit him,’ she thought, ’but whatever Miss does, it must be for a good reason!’
Alvin Lancaster was appalled. ’Has Mama Knight gone mad? This is completely absurd!’
’And what is my sister thinking? Why would she attack Uncle Clark out of nowhere?’
’She clearly knew this stabbing was going to happen, but instead of trying to stop it, she’s beating up the hero who stepped in.’
’What sense does that make?!’
"Jane Lancaster, stop this at once!" he yelled, unable to watch any longer.
[Beep. Change in affection detected. Disgust +3.]
