Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Why Is He Here?

"Gavin, tell the driver I’m going to Aethelan Hospital." The moment the meeting ended, Jasper Sterling gave the order to his assistant, who had just walked up to him.

"At this hour?" Gavin was shocked. The meeting was over, and the senior executives from the various branches were waiting to report to Jasper Sterling individually.

Jasper Sterling’s phone suddenly rang.

"Young Master Sterling, something’s wrong! Miss Lancaster is gone! I can’t get in touch with her!" an anxious voice said over the phone.

It was the driver of the luxury taxi. Jasper Sterling had given him extra money, not to report on Jane Lancaster’s whereabouts, but to notify him immediately if there were any special circumstances.

Jasper Sterling’s expression changed. He snatched his car keys and bolted, without even a word of instruction for Gavin.

The secretarial team, waiting in the hallway for their boss to assign them work, was completely bewildered. ’What in the world just happened?’

Lawson glanced at Jane Lancaster, then at Claire Sheffield, who was holding a flowerpot. He suddenly charged at the unprepared Ethan Carter.

He’d been scared witless by Jane Lancaster’s earlier moves and knew she was no easy target.

As for Claire Sheffield, he was a full-grown man, far superior in height, build, and strength. On top of that, he was holding a weapon.

If he had to kill someone today to vent his anger, then Ethan Carter was by far the easier target.

He had long held a grudge against Ethan Carter. For days, Carter had not only mocked him for being a good-for-nothing but had also been mooching food and drinks off him without paying.

’Since he pities me so much, he might as well accompany me to Hell!’

He struck without a trace of hesitation. Ethan Carter hadn’t even realized his intentions.

The first strike was knocked aside by Jane Lancaster; the second was caught bare-handed by Claire Sheffield.

The door to the adjacent examination room flew open, and the female doctor from before charged out, wildly bashing Lawson with a keyboard.

Seeing their chance, two men rushed forward and, with perfect coordination, wrestled the knife away from him.

More people surged forward, pinioning the arms of the wildly struggling Lawson and holding him firmly on the ground.

The dust settled.

The most seriously injured at the scene were the two female patients who had been stabbed in the abdomen, followed by Claire Sheffield.

The gash on Claire Sheffield’s hand was deep enough to expose bone, and blood dripped from it without stopping.

Ethan Carter took two knife wounds to his arm and stomach, but they weren’t deep. He still had enough energy to scream his head off.

The female doctor had a fractured wrist. The two guys who helped had also been cut by the blade, but thankfully their injuries were minor.

Soon, security and the medical staff from the emergency department arrived, taking the most seriously injured to the emergency building for treatment.

Jane Lancaster was also being helped by a nurse, ready to leave, when she suddenly heard crying from behind her.

She turned to look and saw Lawson, who had just been taken into custody by security guards.

He showed none of his earlier ferocity. With his hands pinned behind him and a bruise on the corner of his mouth, he looked utterly pathetic.

"I was wrong. I shouldn’t have hurt anyone, but I really didn’t mean to! I was forced into it!"

"My wife cheated on me with Dr. Sheffield, scammed me out of my company, and spent my money on a boy toy and on male livestreamers!"

"She spent three million just on donations to streamers, and now she’s taken a liking to Dr. Sheffield. The two of them often pull the curtain in the exam room to have their affair!"

The onlookers, unaware of the full story, were stunned. ’Is that what really happened?’

Jane Lancaster sighed, not at all surprised.

’Is it time for the suspect’s performance again? So annoying. I should have just beaten him until he couldn’t speak earlier.’

’These two security guards are so unprofessional. Why didn’t they gag him?’

She thought for a moment, then said softly to the nurse, "Miss, would you mind helping me over there?"

The nurse was completely won over by her sweet tone and immediately helped her over.

Seeing they were only a few steps away from Lawson and the guards, she quickly warned, "Be careful..."

Jane Lancaster smiled, bending down to pick up a stool.

Suddenly, her wrist was grabbed, and the next second, the stool was snatched from her grasp.

"What do you think you’re doing? Your hands are trembling," said the person behind her.

Jane Lancaster froze for a moment, then turned her head to meet a pair of beautiful peach-blossom eyes.

’How did he get here?’

’I get it. The driver must have told him. I let my guard down around this guy way too soon!’

"Young Master Sterling certainly has perfect timing, as if he’s equipped with automatic radar," she couldn’t help but say sarcastically.

Jasper Sterling smiled, took her cold hand, and lowered his gaze to wipe the blood from her wrist.

"If you’d just tell me things, I wouldn’t need radar."

The bloodstain wiped away easily. The young man’s long eyelashes fluttered. ’It’s not hers?’

He snapped back to his senses, yanked up her sleeve for a quick inspection, and felt his heart start beating normally again. It wasn’t her blood!

Jane Lancaster was completely shocked. ’How can this person be so shameless? Not only does he admit to spying on me, but he’s even pushing his luck?’

’Talk is fine, but why are you getting all handsy?’

’He couldn’t have been possessed, could he? The way he was smiling just now was weird!’

Her train of thought was cut short as she looked down at the phone now resting in her palm.

Jasper Sterling gently closed her fingers around it. "Use this. It doesn’t count as armed assault."

Jane Lancaster understood. It was one thing for an emotional victim to land a few blows on their attacker, but bashing him with a stool would be much harder to justify.

’You’ve got to be kidding. Your phone must be full of business secrets. If I break it, you’ll make me pay for it...’

"You won’t have to pay. It’s on me." Jasper Sterling smiled, then unexpectedly sent Lawson flying with a kick.

Not only that, but he also walked over and stomped on Lawson, who was trying to get up, pinning him back down.

"What do you think you’re doing!" Several security guards reacted, quickly drawing their batons and pointing them at Jasper Sterling.

Jasper Sterling said, "My apologies. I have a strong sense of justice. When I run into a villain like this who’s trying to kill people, my hands get itchy."

He moved his foot, politely took two steps back, and allowed the security guards to help Lawson up.

Jane Lancaster picked up a drink bottle that someone had dropped on the floor and threw it at him.

This time it hit him square in the face. Lawson let out a pained scream. It nearly broke his nose!

The security guard was instantly furious. He moved forward to grab her. "Who told you to hit him? Even criminals have human rights!"

Jasper Sterling stepped forward to block Jane Lancaster. "Why don’t you demand that the criminal not violate our human rights?"

Jane Lancaster’s voice was tearful. "I was just so scared. If everyone hadn’t worked together, we could have been the ones who died."

’Sigh. No choice. I guess I have to play the pitiful victim now.’

Jasper Sterling’s voice was icy. "You’re defending him so much. Don’t tell me you’re starting to sympathize with a murderer just because you heard him cry for a bit?"

The people around them also started murmuring among themselves.

"Yeah, how can he ask us to be calm?"

"No matter what, trying to murder innocent people is wrong!"

"I’m afraid of dying! I was afraid I’d be the target of his rage. There’s no way I’d sympathize with someone like that!"

The security guard got a little scared. "...Nonsense, that’s not it!"

Although he sympathized with Lawson and felt the man’s situation was tragic, he definitely couldn’t admit it now.

Fortunately, the police finally arrived at that moment and efficiently escorted Lawson away.

Jane Lancaster returned the phone to Jasper Sterling, then turned to see the nurse still waiting nearby. She gave her a gentle smile. "Miss, let’s go."

Just as the nurse was about to help her, her body was lifted into the air as someone picked her up.

She was aghast. The thing she feared most was being princess-carried!

’It’s fine if you want to show off, but don’t use me as a guinea pig! What if you’re not strong enough and drop me?’

She even had proof!

’That dope Alvin Lancaster fractured a bone because he dropped Luna Morgan while trying to carry her!’
