Chapter 23: Chapter 23: She Was Scammed by a Shady Dealer and Bought a Knockoff

Jane Lancaster had no intention of waiting for their approval. She lunged forward, taking them by surprise, and tried to snatch the bag.

"What the fuck, are you a robber?" Ethan Carter panicked and quickly helped Lawson pull the bag back.

Jane had already felt the shape of a knife inside the bag. "Let go! There’s a knife in here!"

Beside them, Lawson suddenly spun around, yanked open the door, and ran.

Ethan Carter used his bulky frame to shove Jane against the wall, sneering, "A knife? Just because you say so? Who are you trying to scare?"

"Get lost!" Jane was truly furious now. She kicked him away and gave chase.

The moment she ran out, her heart sank. Two people were lying in the empty hallway, their abdomens covered in blood.

Lawson had another knife hidden on him!

On the other side of the corridor, a triage station separated the waiting area from the consultation rooms. The people outside had no idea a stabbing had occurred inside, and one patient, hearing their number called, was even walking in.

"Get back! There’s an attacker!" Jane screamed. "The assailant went into 405!"

The patient reacted slowly, and upon seeing people on the ground, actually took a few steps forward, wanting a closer look.

Jane couldn’t worry about him. Room 405 was in trouble.

A female doctor was on duty in Room 405. Lawson saw her the moment he entered, but he didn’t hesitate, lunging with the knife.

The doctor reacted quickly, ducking to evade the attack.

Lawson abandoned his target and turned to stab the patient beside him, who was clearly frozen in fear.

Jane arrived at that exact moment. She pushed the patient aside and raised her arm to block the blow. The tip of the knife tore through her clothes but couldn’t break her skin.

This was the "Iron Wall, Bronze Arm" item she had redeemed from the system. It lasted for five minutes, granting her arms an invincible defense. However, after it expired, the damage she had taken would be reflected back onto her, amplified.

Five minutes was more than enough for Jane. She blocked several more stabs before finally finding an opportunity to grab the blade with her bare hand.

Lawson’s face was a mask of terror and disbelief. ’Isn’t this woman afraid of dying?’

No, the real question was, after being stabbed so many times, how had she not bled a single drop?!

After taking an elbow to the chest, he completely broke down, struggling wildly and without any technique. To his surprise, he actually broke free.

Without a second thought, Lawson turned and fled. This woman was terrifying; he was scared out of his wits.

Jane leaned against the wall, breaking out in a cold sweat from the pain. Only one thought echoed in her mind: ’That crooked merchant scammed me! I bought a defective product!’

The five minutes weren’t up yet, but the item had already failed.

There were no visible wounds on her arm, but the amplified, rebounding pain was agonizingly real, causing her to miss the opportunity to capture him.

---

It wasn’t until Ethan Carter saw Lawson charge into Room 405 that he realized what the man intended to do.

He wasn’t surprised. The simple man had been pushed to the brink and was finally fighting back.

He had seen the ex-wife before. She drove a luxury car to the hospital, a woman in her thirties dressed like she was in her twenties. It was obvious she was a gold-digger, the mistress of some rich old man.

Back then, no one believed him. They’d asked, "Couldn’t she have earned the money herself through her own business?"

Later, Lawson followed the woman to the hospital and confirmed his suspicions. She had bled her rich ex-husband dry and then kicked him to the curb!

Then she used her ex-husband’s money to keep a pretty boy!

He felt the ex-wife and her lover were equally despicable. Lawson should have stabbed them long ago. Now *that* was acting like a man!

The problem was, Dr. Sheffield wasn’t working today. What a screw-up. Lawson had the wrong person!

As cries for help came from inside, people started to notice the commotion.

Some ran away, while others pushed against the crowd, moving closer.

"What’s going on?"

Ethan Carter froze, his gaze traveling from the person’s well-tailored suit up to their face.

It was confirmed. This person, exuding an air of wealth, was none other than the cold-faced Dr. Sheffield!

She wasn’t scheduled to work today, yet here she was in the outpatient department.

A surge of anger rose in his chest. ’Lawson is risking his life... and Claire Sheffield shows up wearing such expensive clothes just to flaunt her status!’

Seeing Lawson rush back out, he quickly shouted, "Dr. Sheffield, over here!"

He was desperately trying to signal to Lawson that the person he was looking for was right there.

Jane chased after him, hurling a stool she had grabbed. Unfortunately, her arm was trembling in pain, ruining her aim; it only managed to strike the man’s knee.

"Stay back, all of you!" she yelled. After shouting, she felt a tearing pain in her chest and couldn’t help but clutch it, letting out a few quiet coughs.

’This body is still too weak,’ she thought. ’It can’t handle this much strain.’

The nurse at the triage station came to her senses and blocked Claire Sheffield’s path. "Dr. Sheffield, get out of here! Security is on its way up!"

When Claire Sheffield saw Jane come out, her expression darkened. "Reckless!"

’The safest thing to do right now would be to hide in a consultation room and lock the door, like everyone else.’

’Why did she chase him out? Does she have a death wish?’

Jane suppressed the churning in her chest and said coldly, "If you don’t want to die, get the hell away from here."

Ethan Carter stared blankly for a moment before realizing she was talking to him.

’Is this woman addicted to playing the hero?’

’What does this have to do with her? How dare she speak to me in that tone.’

Of the three people closest to Lawson, she was clearly the weakest. She looked half-dead, gasping for breath. She was basically just serving herself up on a platter!

’So stupid, yet she still wants to steal the credit. Shameless.’

Of course, he couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. He quickly yelled at Lawson, "Don’t do anything rash! Put the knife down!"

Inside, he was anxious for Lawson. ’The pretty boy is right in front of you! Hurry up and do it! It’s now or never!’

He was furious at Jane for getting in the way. ’If Lawson stabs her too,’ he thought, ’that’d be a bonus!’

When Alvin Lancaster woke up that morning, he felt a persistent sense of unease, as if something bad was about to happen.

After breakfast, he was in the downstairs conference room reading work emails when he suddenly called for the car to be prepared.

He remembered. Today was the day Luna Morgan was being discharged from the hospital, and it was also the day his sister’s inner voice had said the "incident" would happen!

No wonder he was so restless. His sixth sense had always been sharp; he had felt the same anxiety on the day his sister had her accident years ago.

’Luna is so kind and brave. If she runs into something like this, she’ll definitely be the first to rush in. I hope she’ll be okay!’

He was burning with anxiety the entire drive. Fortunately, halfway there, he saw a message from Luna Morgan, saying she had already been picked up by Pauline Shaw.

’Thank goodness! The timing is different. Luna will be safe!’

Alvin Lancaster had just breathed a sigh of relief when his phone suddenly rang. It was Mama Knight.

"Mr. Alvin! Miss Jane is gone! I can’t get in touch with her!"

Mama Knight was truly beside herself with panic this time. When she came out from her check-up, not only was Miss Jane unreachable, but a violent incident had also broken out in the hospital!

"I heard there’s trouble on the fourth floor of the outpatient building, someone’s attacking people with a knife! What do I do? Miss Jane wouldn’t have gone over there, would she?"

The hospital had sealed off the fourth floor, so she couldn’t get in. Pacing in anxiety, her first thought was to call Mr. Alvin for help.

Alvin Lancaster was stunned. A violent incident really did happen!

’But didn’t my sister’s inner voice say it would happen at noon? It’s still morning!’

---

Early that morning, Jasper Sterling was in an operations meeting.

He had received a report from his people at the hotel that Jane Lancaster was going to the hospital today.

Although the report repeatedly emphasized she was just accompanying Mama Knight for a routine check-up, he still sensed something was off.

’Mama Knight could have her check-up anytime. Why did it have to be now?’

’Jane has her own rehabilitation check-up next month. They could have done it then to save a trip.’

’Mama Knight would never suggest such a thing on her own. It must have been Jane’s request.’
