Chapter 7: Chapter 6: The Long Night
"Su Ran, why won’t the bathroom door lock? I’ve tried locking it several times, but it’s not working."
"The lock’s broken."
"Then how am I supposed to shower?"
Normally, this would be a perfectly fine question, but to Su Ran, it sounded grating.
"...Liu Jinyu, why are you so guarded against me? You think I’m going to burst in and watch you shower or something? Is there no basic trust left between people?"
Trust is very important.
"Okay."
Liu Jinyu quietly walked into the bathroom and pulled the door shut. She paused. ’The door still needs to be locked.’ She wrapped her underwear around the doorknob a few times and jiggled it. It seemed like it couldn’t be pushed open now.
’Just self-deception, really.’
This was a society governed by law, after all. He wasn’t stupid enough to throw away the rest of his life for a moment of pleasure.
"Su Ran, where’s the hair dryer?"
"You’re done in just three minutes?"
"Mhm."
’Why would I take any longer? It’s not like I’m washing myself squeaky clean for you to sample.’
"The hair dryer is in the cabinet under the sink."
"Found it."
She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her long, black hair cascaded over her shoulders. She was wearing a clean white shirt, smelling of laundry detergent, that just barely covered the tops of her thighs, leaving her long, slender, pale legs completely exposed.
She had never imagined that one day she would be showering in a strange man’s RV, wearing his white shirt.
She took a deep breath, clutched a towel to her chest, and gently twisted open the bathroom door. Stepping onto the mat, she stood stiffly in the doorway. In a soft, timid voice, she called out, "Su Ran~"
Su Ran, who had been charging his phone on the sofa, turned his head to look at Liu Jinyu. ’Looks like the system’s rating wasn’t an exaggeration after all.’
Liu Jinyu shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a blush creeping up her pretty face. She nibbled her lower lip, unable to meet his gaze. Her feet, with nowhere to go, fidgeted on the waterproof mat.
"You’re very pretty."
"Thank you."
"The slippers are on the bottom shelf of the shoe rack next to you."
"Okay."
Due to the limited space in the RV, the shoe rack faced the sofa. To get the slippers, Liu Jinyu would have to turn her back to Su Ran and bend over. But if she bent over, she’d be completely exposed to him.
She hesitated, awkwardly hovering in a half-squat for what felt like an eternity.
Su Ran understood her predicament. "I’ll turn around. Go ahead and get them." He turned his head to look out the window.
Relieved, Liu Jinyu put on the slippers, walked over to the opposite sofa, and sat down, hugging a throw pillow to her chest.
"Su Ran, thank you for taking me in. If it weren’t for you, I would have been done for tonight."
"It’s nothing. People should help each other when they’re away from home. If I were in your situation, I’m sure you’d take me in too."
"Yes! If it were you, I’d feel safe letting you into my car. I wouldn’t dare with any other guy."
"Why?"
"Because I believe you’re a good person."
"..."
Su Ran shook his head and smiled. He could tell that Liu Jinyu was constantly reinforcing the idea that ’you’re a good person.’ It was a way of guilt-tripping him to make sure he wouldn’t try anything funny.
Liu Jinyu glanced around the RV’s interior and said with a smile, "This RV of yours is quite luxurious. This sofa we’re sitting on should fold out into a bed, right?"
"It doesn’t."
"It doesn’t?"
"Nope. I’m renting this RV. The owner is a single guy who loves the RV lifestyle, so he modified the whole layout. The sofa used to convert into a bed, and there was a berth over the cab, but he got rid of all that. Now there’s only the one large bed in the back."
Liu Jinyu did a tactical lean-back. ’There’s only one bed, and you still invited me up to stay the night?’
"Oh... it’s fine." Liu Jinyu patted the meter-long sofa. "I can just squeeze onto the sofa. Just get me a blanket."
"I only bought one blanket today."
"...It’s okay. Just turn up the heat. I’ll pay you for whatever fuel it uses."
"Let me see." Su Ran walked over to the central control panel to check the status. "Uh... the current battery charge will only last for about three hours. It’ll get really cold in the middle of the night. The fuel level isn’t great either. This thing is heavy and guzzles gas. If we keep using diesel for heating, we’ll have a hard time getting out of the mountains tomorrow."
Liu Jinyu bit her lip, her innocent eyes watching him as he matter-of-factly explained the grim situation they were facing.
’Now there’s only one bed. But how are we supposed to sleep?’
Su Ran said nonchalantly, "This is the situation. There’s only one bed to sleep on and no extra blankets. How about this: we both sleep on the bed, just at opposite ends. What do you think?"
"I..."
Outside, the wind howled and the rain poured down. The thermostat showed it was 25 degrees Celsius inside the vehicle, but only 7 degrees outside.
After three hours, the battery would be dead, and the temperature inside would be the same as outside. Who could stand that? You’d freeze to death.
"Okay. One at each end."
In the end, she compromised with reality, buoyed, of course, by her trust in Su Ran.
"I’m going to bed first."
She got up and scurried over to the bed with quick little steps, took off her slippers, and climbed on. Kneeling on the sheets, she straightened the comforter and asked, "Su Ran, which end are you sleeping on?"
"I don’t mind either."
"Then I’ll sleep on this side, and you sleep on that side."
"Alright."
Liu Jinyu slid under the covers. The silk comforter was new and very warm.
She scooted as far to the inside as possible, leaving plenty of space for Su Ran and creating a clear dividing line between them.
"Okay, I’m turning off the lights."
He switched off the lights and the heater, plunging the RV into darkness.
Su Ran fumbled his way onto the bed, slid under the covers, and settled in at the other end.
Silence fell inside the RV. It was, after all, Liu Jinyu’s first time sharing a bed with a boy, and she was very nervous.
Su Ran, on the other hand, was fine. In a situation like this, he held all the power; he had nothing to be nervous about.
"..."
"Su Ran, good night."
"Good night."
Soon, the two exhausted people fell asleep.
After sleeping for some unknown amount of time, Liu Jinyu got up to pee, then groggily returned to the large bed and went back to sleep.
