Chapter 8: Chapter 7: Stinky Little Brother
Morning light pierced the thin mist in the mountain ravine, shining upon Jiuxi Lake after the rain had passed. Sparrows chirped on the branches, and fish broke the surface, blowing bubbles.
Bright sunshine, a tranquil time.
On the large bed inside the RV, Liu Jinyu, dressed in an oversized white shirt, slept soundly and peacefully in Su Ran’s arms.
Sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, illuminating the pale, long legs she had draped over Su Ran.
Around eight o’clock, Liu Jinyu groggily opened her eyes. She was startled to see Su Ran holding her and immediately shoved his hands away, kicking him in annoyance. "What do you think you’re doing?!"
Su Ran woke up, shook his groggy head, and rubbed the arm that had gone sore and numb from Liu Jinyu sleeping on it.
Liu Jinyu’s face instantly flushed crimson. She snatched the blanket and wrapped it tightly around herself.
"Su Ran, and here I was thinking you were a good person! Is this how you treat me?"
No wonder Liu Jinyu had slept like a log all night. Apparently, she’d gotten the equivalent of a full-body spa treatment.
Su Ran stretched. "Don’t be so dramatic. Why don’t you take a look at which side of the bed you were on?"
Liu Jinyu glanced down and realized she was on Su Ran’s side. Only then did she remember getting up to use the bathroom last night and coming back to the wrong side.
"But... but you could have woken me up! Or you could have switched to the other side!"
"...I woke up last night and saw you sleeping on my arm. I called your name several times, but you were out like a light. You wouldn’t wake up, and you were holding me tight. How was I supposed to move? Besides, I was exhausted too, so I just let you borrow my shoulder."
Su Ran was telling the truth.
She shot him a resentful glare, wrapped a towel around herself, and went to the bathroom to take a shower.
Su Ran shook his head, exasperated. He stepped out of the RV and spotted a tent in a patch of overgrown grass nearby.
"Liu Jinyu, is that red tent over there yours?"
"Where?"
Liu Jinyu yanked the curtain aside to look out, then jumped in excitement. "Yes, yes, yes! That’s it!"
Bouncing with the movement.
"...I’ll go get it for you. Just... try to stop acting so indecently. You’re really getting me fired up."
"What?"
Liu Jinyu glanced down at herself, then yanked the curtains shut with a SWISH, stomping her foot in humiliation.
...
「A moment later.」
Su Ran’s voice called out from the distance, "Liu Jinyu, bring the clothes-drying pole over here!"
"Okay... Wait a minute!"
Liu Jinyu dried herself off, put on her shirt, and went outside with the drying pole.
’To be honest, she still had some reservations. She was an unmarried young woman, after all.’
’But, as he said... something about some book called *The Subconscious*... it was all unintentional. Just like how I subconsciously ended up in his arms.’
’She was certain of one thing: Su Ran wasn’t some kind of sleazebag. If he really were that type of person, then last night...’
’Besides, Su Ran was handsome and kind... and warm. Now that she thought about it, sleeping in his arms really did make her feel safe.’
At this thought, a surreptitious smile crept onto Liu Jinyu’s face.
"Hey, Liu Jinyu, what are you doing stroking that drying pole?"
"Huh?" Liu Jinyu snapped back to reality and looked down to see her right hand gripping and stroking the pole. "Holy crap!" she yelped, frantically throwing the pole to the ground and stumbling back two steps, absolutely mortified.
Su Ran shook his head with a smile. He picked up the pole and strode toward the patch of weeds.
"Su Ran, the weeds are too thick! What if there are snakes? Come back! As long as my phone is okay, nothing else matters."
"I know."
"Then why aren’t you coming back?!"
Su Ran lifted the pole and pointed up into a tree. "You take a look. Does that thing hanging up there look very dignified to you?"
Liu Jinyu looked up. It was her brand-new ’Cosmo Lady black lace D-cup bra.’
Pfft— She nearly coughed up blood. She wished she could find a hole to crawl into and disappear.
"Could you please get it down?"
"No problem."
Su Ran used the pole to retrieve it. Liu Jinyu snatched it from him, grabbed her bag, and chirped, "Let’s go~" before scurrying away.
’She didn’t know what to think of herself anymore. She had managed to make a complete fool of herself in front of Su Ran in every way imaginable.’
’And yet, strangely, it didn’t feel that awkward. The main reason was Su Ran’s easygoing attitude, which always seemed to diffuse the tension.’
Back in the RV, while Liu Jinyu was packing her things, Su Ran handed her a carton of milk.
"Thanks."
"You’re welcome. Looks like we might get more rain. How about we head back to town first? What do you think?"
"Can we go straight to the high-speed rail station? My original plan was just to watch the sunrise at Jiuxi Lake and then head back, so I already bought a ticket for the 12:05 PM bullet train to Shanghai."
"Of course."
...
Su Ran started driving. After Liu Jinyu finished packing, she used the dryer to dry her clothes and got changed.
At 11:45 AM, the RV pulled up outside Jiuxi High-Speed Rail Station.
Liu Jinyu had changed into jeans and a white T-shirt, her hair tied back in a ponytail, looking vibrant and full of life.
The two of them stood by the door of the RV.
"Su Ran, let’s add each other on Xunxin."
"Okay."
They scanned their QR codes and added each other.
Liu Jinyu smiled. Only now did she realize how unforgettable the whole experience had been.
"It’s almost time. You should head inside."
"Okay. Bye-bye."
Liu Jinyu picked up her luggage and turned to leave. After just two steps, she suddenly felt a pang of reluctance.
She bit her lip, hesitated for a moment, then put down her luggage. Turning back, she walked right up to Su Ran, stood on her tiptoes, and planted a kiss on his cheek as light as a dragonfly skimming water.
"Thank you for taking care of me last night, Su Ran."
She turned in a fluster, nudged her luggage with her foot, and ran into the station.
Su Ran touched his cheek where her faint, sweet scent lingered. He smiled, got back in the driver’s seat, and pulled the RV into traffic.
BEEP BEEP BEEP...
A message from Liu Jinyu popped up: [Su Ran, about that psychologist—what was his name again?—who wrote *The Subconscious*... I can’t find anything about it online?]
Su Ran: [That person doesn’t exist. I made it up.]
Liu Jinyu: [And the whole subconscious theory?]
Su Ran: [That’s just my personal take on it.]
[Aha! I knew you were tricking me! I’m going to kill you, you little brat! Hmph~]
She squeezed her thighs together, her face completely flushed. He had explored territory that no other man had ever touched.
Su Ran: [Text me when you get there safely.]
Liu Jinyu: [Okay.]
「On the high-speed train.」
Liu Jinyu gazed at the scenery flashing past the train window. Remembering her trip to Jiuxi Lake, a sweet, irrepressible smile spread across her face.
She breathed a puff of warm air onto the glass and, with her index finger, wrote the name "Su Ran".
After a moment, a thought struck her. Mustering her courage, she sent Su Ran another message: [Su Ran, I got your shirt dirty. I’ll take it back to Shanghai, wash it, and mail it to you.]
BEEP BEEP BEEP...
Su Ran’s reply: [Don’t worry about it. I’ll come to Shanghai to pick it up myself!]
