Chapter 6: Chapter 5: You Can Sleep Here Tonight
Night fell, the vast, starry sky reflected on Jiuxi Lake.
The scattered tents on the shore glowed faintly. Some people were drinking and gazing at the night sky, some were following along with a Liu Genghong workout video, and others had coaxed their girlfriends into the nearby woods...
Liu Jinyu sat in front of her tent, munching on snacks, enjoying the night view, and video-chatting with her best friend, occasionally stealing a glance at Su Ran over by his RV.
’She was studying in Shanghai, so she’d seen plenty of handsome guys, but this Su Ran fellow was truly different. He wasn’t the drop-dead-gorgeous-at-first-glance type. Instead, he had a clean, wholesome kind of handsomeness. The more you looked at him, the better-looking he became, radiating a soothing, approachable aura. That was the deadliest part. It would make a girl instinctively trust him, thinking he was healing her, when in reality, he’d be the one to give her depression.’
’This model of boy is poisonous. Girls should handle with care.’
Girls analyze handsome guys they see, just as boys fantasize about pretty girls they see. It’s the same principle.
At this moment, Su Ran wasn’t thinking about girls. He was thinking about a man—Han Xin.
Beside the RV, in front of the bonfire, sat Su Ran in a chair, playing a match of *Honor of Kings* and absolutely popping off with Han Xin.
In the past, his Han Xin had been a complete disaster. A 0-11-1 K/D/A was a typical result for him, and he’d always get flamed for being a "noob" before rage-quitting in shame.
Today, however, he’d scored a quadra kill, playing so well that his Wang Zhaojun teammate was spamming, "Carry me, pro!"
’Finger Technique Fragrance is a great Skill. My fingers are so nimble now, it’s more than enough to make flashy plays with Han Xin. I can finally stop playing support and be the jungler instead.’
After a five-game winning streak, Su Ran decisively quit. If he kept playing, a losing streak was sure to follow. The matchmaking system wouldn’t allow for the existence of someone so damn good.
"Whew... I finally made it to Diamond."
A cool breeze swept across Jiuxi Lake. Su Ran returned to the RV, took a shower, and lay down on the comfortable, large bed. The vast night sky shone down through the sunroof, blanketing the bed in starlight.
Su Ran, shirtless, was reading a "Divine Rich" novel. He wanted to see how the fictional Divine Rich characters lived.
The more he read, the deeper his brow furrowed. The secondhand embarrassment was so intense he felt like he could carve a new room with his curling toes.
"What is this garbage? In the morning, he’s a total loser. He suddenly gets a Divine Wealth System and tips a streamer five million. In the afternoon, he buys a Bugatti. At night, he buys drinks for the entire bar. At midnight, he’s taking a girl to the presidential suite. The next day, he buys a condo at Tangchen Yipin. And he’s slept with five virgins in the span of three Chapters?"
’Sorry, but I just don’t get the appeal.’
He silently closed the novel app.
Even Su Ran, a genuine Divine Rich himself, wouldn’t dare to be that extravagant.
’I know I’m going to be very rich in the future, but living like that... whether my bank account could handle it is one thing, but my body definitely couldn’t.’
’You don’t have to jump every beautiful woman you see, do you? Are these guys that desperate?’
’Whatever. I’ll just live life my own way.’
He turned off the light and went to sleep.
「Time slipped away.」
The scattered lights along the shore went out one by one. Liu Jinyu returned to her tent, zipped up the flap, turned off her flashlight, changed into a nightgown, and snuggled into her thin blanket.
Naturally, there was no running water for a shower while camping, but it was just for one night. She could make do.
A girl camping outdoors had to be on guard. She had a Swiss Army knife hidden under her pillow.
Liu Jinyu slept soundly, seemingly lost in a pleasant dream. A contented smile graced her lips, and her body shifted gently.
In the middle of the night, she heard the sound of wind and rain.
Groggy, she fumbled for her flashlight and switched it on, only to see that her tent was flooded with water.
A fierce wind howled outside as heavy rain poured down, DRUMMING against the fabric of her tent.
Liu Jinyu unzipped the flap to check, only to find that a torrential downpour had started. The water level of Jiuxi Lake had also risen during the night. Because she had picked a prime spot right next to the water, the rising tide had swamped the floor of her tent.
’Thank god I woke up,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, I might never have woken up at all.’
The other tents by the lake had long since been moved, leaving only hers and the RV in the distance.
"Damn it, can’t this stupid weather forecast be right for once?"
Liu Jinyu muttered a complaint but didn’t dare to hesitate. She quickly scrambled out and began trying to take down the tent in the downpour. The moment she pulled the stakes out, a furious gust of wind howled past and instantly swept the tent away.
Well, crap.
"Hey, hey, hey, don’t fly away...!"
Liu Jinyu gave chase, but her feet slipped and she fell to the ground, watching helplessly as the fierce wind carried her tent into the woods.
All of her belongings were inside it.
The fierce wind and rain lashed at Liu Jinyu. It was a miserable situation, but this was no time for tears. She had to find shelter and call for help.
She walked up to the RV. The curtains were drawn. Wiping the rain from her face, she KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCKED on the window, her voice choked with a sob. "Su Ran... Su Ran..."
Accompanied by the pleasant pitter-patter of raindrops, the soundly sleeping Su Ran was completely lost to the world.
She knocked for a long time, on the verge of breaking down in tears. Finally, Su Ran heard the knocking. He pulled back the curtain and was shocked to see what looked like Sadako from *The Ring* peering through his window. He was so scared he yelped, "Holy shit!" and had the sudden urge to jump into the driver’s seat, throw the RV in reverse, and run the ghost over.
"Su Ran."
Su Ran cracked open the window. "Liu Jinyu? What’s wrong?"
"My tent... it blew away," she said pitifully.
"Pfft—"
"?"
"...Get in."
"Okay."
Su Ran pulled on a T-shirt and opened the door to let Liu Jinyu in.
Shivering, Liu Jinyu climbed into the vehicle.
Su Ran grabbed a bath towel, tossed it to her, and turned on the heat.
Liu Jinyu wrapped the towel around her shoulders and started rubbing her soaking-wet hair. "Su Ran, can I borrow your phone to call for help?"
"Here." Su Ran handed her his phone.
"Thanks." Liu Jinyu took the phone. The wallpaper was a beautiful image of an anime girl wearing nothing but a men’s dress shirt. It was very striking.
’Guys just love seeing girls in their white dress shirts. It’s to please them, I guess.’
Without thinking much of it, she dialed 911.
"Hello, Officer, I— Hello? Hello! Officer!"
A recorded voice announced that the phone had shut down.
"It’s dead?"
"Sorry, I was listening to music just now and forgot to charge it."
The usually strong Liu Jinyu finally broke at that moment, and her eyes instantly welled up.
Su Ran said kindly, "It’s raining so hard the roads are probably blocked. You shouldn’t bother the police. If you don’t mind, you can stay in the RV for the night. Once the rain stops tomorrow morning, I’ll drive you out."
Liu Jinyu looked at Su Ran warily. ’He has this earnest, helpful expression on his face... but does he have ulterior motives?’
Su Ran could see her hesitation. They were strangers, after all—a man and a woman, all alone. It was only natural for a girl to be on her guard.
"Don’t worry," he said. "I’m just offering you shelter for the night. I won’t try anything."
Liu Jinyu bit her lip, clutching the bath towel tightly. She thought for a moment. ’Su Ran doesn’t seem like a bad person... and besides, staying in his RV is my only option right now.’
"Su Ran... thank you. You’re a good person."
’And there it is, the ’good guy’ card. Once that’s been played, your conscience won’t let you cross the line.’
"Achoo!"
Liu Jinyu sneezed.
"You’re soaked. You should go take a hot shower so you don’t catch a cold. I’ll find a clean T-shirt for you to wear, if you don’t mind."
"I..." Liu Jinyu lowered her head. "Thank you."
"Don’t mention it. Hang on." Su Ran opened his backpack and started rummaging through it. "Ah, it looks like I didn’t pack any T-shirts. Would you mind a white dress shirt instead?"
"?"
’His phone wallpaper?’
’To please him?’
Liu Jinyu’s face instantly flushed bright red.
’A girl wearing a guy’s white T-shirt and a girl wearing his white dress shirt are two completely different things, okay?’
’A T-shirt is cute and playful.’
’A dress shirt is sexy and seductive.’
’And cute stands no chance against sexy.’
’Just imagine: a beautiful woman with fair skin and long legs, wearing an oversized man’s white dress shirt that only partially covers... *ahem*...’
’The effect is practically on par with sexy lingerie.’
"Are you sure you don’t have any T-shirts?"
"I’m sure. It’s just this white shirt. Go on and get changed before you catch a cold."
"Okay... I’m going to take a shower then."
She couldn’t shake the feeling... Was Su Ran’s lack of a scheme, in fact, the greatest scheme of all?
