Chapter 136: Resentment! Next Goal!
The woman spoke for quite some time.
Through her account, both Chen Xuan and Chi Yao gradually pieced together a clearer picture of everything that had happened.
Just as they had suspected, a powerful aura had erupted from the depths of the ocean several days ago, originating from the region where the majority of sea beasts gathered.
Initially, very few people paid attention to it.
The Nine Origins Seas were vast and filled with countless dangers.
Strange phenomena occurred every day, and a powerful aura appearing somewhere in the distance was hardly enough to alarm experienced cultivators.
However, as the aura continued lingering for several days without fading, concern slowly began to spread.
Before anyone could investigate the matter, though, disaster struck.
The sea beasts rioted. Soon afterward, the flying beasts followed suit.
As though driven mad by some unseen force, both groups launched attacks on the nearby islands.
Unfortunately, Starlink Island happened to be caught in the chaos.
Within only a few short hours, the prosperous island had been reduced to ruins.
This explanation matched everything Chen Xuan had witnessed since arriving.
Yet, it raised several new questions. For example...
"Where did Starlink Island’s owner go?"
Chen Xuan’s voice echoed softly through the cave.
"I didn’t detect any particularly powerful beasts outside."
"With his cultivation and the support of the island’s formation, he should have been able to hold out for some time. Even if the island ultimately fell, he should have managed to evacuate at least a portion of the residents."
Upon hearing those words, confusion appeared on the woman’s face. Clearly, she had never considered the issue before, whether because of the situation or because of her lack of strength.
After a brief pause, she shook her head.
"I don’t know, Senior."
"I don’t remember Lord Qingyun appearing at all after the beast riot began."
"If anything, the Lord’s Mansion was among the first locations to be destroyed. Perhaps it was targeted because many powerful cultivators gathered there."
Chen Xuan narrowed his eyes.
His thoughts drifted back to his previous meeting with Daoist Qingyun.
At the time, the island lord had offered him a considerable reward in exchange for protecting Starlink Island for a few days.
Back then, Chen Xuan had already found the request somewhat strange.
After all, why would someone entrust such an important task to a cultivator he had only just met?
Now, looking back, the matter seemed even more suspicious.
Daoist Qingyun was likely not as simple as he had appeared.
Perhaps he had known something in advance and had anticipated that trouble was coming.
The more Chen Xuan thought about it, the more doubtful he became.
Unfortunately, speculation alone was meaningless.
Seeing him fall silent, the woman wisely refrained from speaking.
It was only several minutes later that Chen Xuan finally emerged from his thoughts.
"Thank you for the information."
"You don’t need to worry. This is more than enough to repay the favor of saving you."
As he spoke, Chen Xuan turned around and motioned for Chi Yao to follow.
The two began walking toward the cave entrance, one behind the other.
However, before they could leave, an anxious voice rang out from behind them.
"Senior, wait! Please wait!"
The woman hurried after them.
"Senior, can you take me with you?"
"I don’t dare ask to become your disciple. Even becoming your servant or maid would be enough!"
Her voice became increasingly desperate as she spoke. Unfortunately, the only response she received was silence.
Neither Chen Xuan nor Chi Yao turned around to look at her, much less agree to her request.
The woman’s face stiffened. Disappointment filled her heart.
She knew very well what kind of opportunity she had just missed.
A powerful cultivator willing to save strangers was already a rare sight.
If she could have attached herself to such a person, her future would have been far brighter than before.
Watching the two figures disappear into the distance, a complicated look surfaced in the woman’s eyes.
At first, she had been grateful.
After all, Chen Xuan and Chi Yao had saved her from a fate that most women would consider worse than death.
But as reality settled in, that gratitude slowly began to change.
She recalled the current situation she was in, and resentment arose in her heart.
"Although that man wanted to take advantage of me, he could at least guarantee my safety!"
"Since you killed him, shouldn’t you be responsible for protecting me?"
Recalling how indifferent Chen Xuan and Chi Yao had been toward her plea, the woman’s expression darkened even further.
In her mind, their refusal had suddenly become an act of cruelty.
If they had the ability to save her, why wouldn’t they do so completely? Why would they leave her here alone and helpless?
At that moment, she completely forgot that the two had never owed her anything.
Hatred quietly burned within her eyes, as she vowed to avenge today’s "humiliation" and "injustice".
--
Naturally, Chen Xuan had no idea what the woman inside the cave was thinking.
Even if he did, he wouldn’t have been surprised.
He had lived in this world for a long time and had encountered all kinds of things.
Among them, saving a person only for them to turn around and stab you in the back was a relatively common event.
At the moment, Chen Xuan was preoccupied with something else.
While letting the zombie clear a path through the endless tide of beasts, Chen Xuan retrieved the map of the Nine Origins Seas and began studying it carefully.
He understood that the current beast riot represented both danger and opportunity.
As long as one possessed enough strength—and a bit of luck—it was entirely possible to profit from this disaster.
As such, he wasn’t planning to return to the Tianxuan Domain just yet. After all, it was not that the Tianxuan Domain was any safer with the war between the two factions raging on.
Chen Xuan looked at the map for several minutes.
Just as he was about to make a decision, Chi Yao, who had been silent the entire time, revealed a trace of hesitation.
A moment later, she finally spoke.
