Chapter 202: Flood season

Cindi listened to Evelyn giving orders to the army and the rest of the immortals; she didn’t participate in the frontlines personally; she just stood by in case anything went wrong.

All the troops were in full armor, ready to deal with the flood season. The only other immortal in the room was Khan, who led the frontlines of the base; the rest were just commanders of normal humans.

The Starblaize squad had an army of around 2 million normal humans that fought to conquer the land until the immortals came to deal the final blow.

All of them didn’t dare to look at Cindi, unlike her usual attitude in the army; many rumors circled around about how she was just like her mother or even worse.

In the north their radars had spotted a nova magic blast; everyone knew the source of it. With a nervous face, Cindi went back to her daydreaming. "Its radius was larger than his normal burst; he had sacrificed the weapon for some reason..."

Her mother had prevented all of them from being in touch with him, and with the sudden change in the frontlines, she barely had time to spare for herself.

Cibdi took a deep breath; with any mention of him, her memories of their intimate moments flashed back in her mind. Her hands wanted to find a way under her armor. "Control yourself! I can do it when I return..."

The flood season would have lasted for about two weeks, and only the first day had an army of weaker monsters; the rest would be just a bunch of wanderers. Still, they were dangerous for normal people and harvesters.

The meeting went on, with Evelyn assigning each person a task; with four immortals and half of their army, nothing could pass their defenses.

"All dismissed, let’s get ready for what is about to come."

None of them said a word; a shadow of a near battle was on everyone’s back.

"They are scared." Cindi waited for all of them to leave. "The Goddess Squad will not back down from the volcano."

Evelyn sighed, "How did your diplomatic meeting with Ith go?" Before Ith, they had a worse relationship with Aria, a psycho at any common sense, but after Ith, they had reached some common ground, but all of them were destroyed once more.

"Bad," she said. "They would rather destroy it than let us have it. " The two people that upheld the negotiations were Cibdi and Ith privately; the words were not spread around. Just the higher-ups of both squads knew about the secret meetings.

A month prior, someone had found the largest crystal farm on Mars deep inside an underground volcano; the person was a simple researcher that didn’t know publishing about it would have catastrophic aftermaths.

Their research center had prevented the researcher from publishing the news; it could have had catastrophic outcomes, but it didn’t stop the greed. The researcher sold the information to all immortals and then just returned to earth.

Both Starblaize and Goddess Squad had their armies around the volcano, ready for a snap to start the battle; most of the casualties were just normal humans that tried to conquer the land around the volcano; no immortals still participated in the small back and forths.

"Is it even worth it?" Evelyn had nothing to do with the frontlines; her priorities were her own base and finances of their squad.

"Just by sheer size alone, it can give 10 billion crystals in a year." Cindi showed her a graph: "The closest farm we had to it is under the queen’s base, which gives 6 billion a year; its resources are behind belief."

"Those poor soldiers." With a thousand years of experience, she knew this kind of argument always ended in bloodshed. "How about a fight of champions?"

"I thought about that too, but in that case you and I have to get our hands dirty too."

The pink-haired woman dismissed the idea, "I have nothing to do with the frontlines anymore."

"I don’t think you will have that luxury; things are getting messier each day. We don’t know the guardian of that crystal farm, and the army of the goddess squad is more brutal than ours." Cindi sighed; she had taken many possibilities into mind on how she would win to reach the best outcome with the least casualties.

Evelyn narrowed her eyes on Cindi, their relationship in the squad was always more than just co workers but she couldn’t call her a friend. "That’s something your mother and I are going to decide."

A comforting silence took over the room; both of them got to their work without talking but enjoyed the other one’s company.

"This year from the north so few ants came by..." Evelyn checked the battlefield; tanks and air jets rained heavy fire on the upcoming enemies. They injured them until the frontlines dealt the final blow.

Evelyn remembered the nova explosion. "He could be the reason for that..." From time to time she checked on the hurricane, but as time passed the hurricane had accepted him as part of it, making it hard for her to see him without anyone noticing.

"I know what you are thinking about."

"We have something in common then."

Cindi asked with a shaky voice, "Do you think he can survive?"

"There is one thing that separates us from him: if we need to reach a goal, most of us will just go with the easiest route, but he will go in a way that he will get the most benefit, no matter how much he needs to sacrifice." Evelyn saw her own reflection in the monitor in front of her. "That makes him very dangerous; that’s why I want you to be ready. There might come a day that you have to face him."

Evelyn knew very few people that had a resolve on that level; his luck had a great effect too, but the thing that stood out about him the most was the insane ability to adapt to the environment around him.

"I d..."

All the monitors in their room turned red, with the ten entrances around the city of the forgotten alarming with red lights.

Usually during flood season only level 10 to 12 monsters came to the surface. On rare occasions monsters with higher levels came out; they were anomalies that immortals had to personally deal with.

"10 level 15..." Evelyn had to check the data a few more times; the most they had seen was level 13 before.

"We should send out our immortals to the city." Cindi picked up her phone; if they didn’t do anything fast, the city would have been destroyed.

"No. We don’t have enough troops, and we have an upcoming fight.

Cindi’s body froze; she hated that her mind agreed with the words. "But..."

"They have to stink on their own until the flood in here ends," Evelyn said with an emotionless voice. The city had only five immortals that could actually fight an anomaly.

"What the hell?" Evelyn detected another strong foe entering their territory; with the magic, it could only be Scarlet. "Why is she heading to the hurricane?"

"Our agreement prevented them from getting in touch with Ray!" Cindi clenched her fists; the other party obviously was going against the words of her mother.

The act itself was a validation; if they had enough courage to just ignore the commands of the Red Queen, it meant they had their own plans to deal with the situation.

A message came for both of them through their systems:

Scarlet is acting on her own, but she means no harm to your base or any squad member.

"Aria?" Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "How are we going to trust that?" The worst person among all of them was Aria, with the ego and the thought of her being better than anyone; very few people could work with her.

And there was the zoo part; the infamous zoo was the main reason many people hated her, yet no one even dared to oppose her.

Cindi read the message again: "She’s implying that she’s not acting on the side of their squad; let’s wait." She knew about some sexual encounters that the two had previously; biting her nails, Cibdi didn’t want to think about what would happen between the two of them.

Evelyn, despite her lack of trust in the other party, decided to wait; the monsters needed a few days to reach the city too. The city was built as far as possible from any entrance, and maybe in a few days they had a few immortals to spare. Anomalies were not a danger to a whole squad if they went on a hunt all together.

After a few minutes the signals returned again, but someone else was by her side. "Ray is following her?" Cindi’s expression turned grim. "Why are they heading toward the city? So fast?"
