Chapter 203: Defenders of the city

In the last moment, Ray’s plan was stopped by a presence heading his way; since she was part of his harem, Ray could detect her.

Slowly a woman with curly hair and in red armor reached his eyesight; like her usual state, her eyes were closed while flying.

In a minute a goddess-squad member with closed eyes stood before him.

"What do you want?"

Scarlet put her hand on her chest. "Oh my, after so long that’s how you greet me!"

"Speak or fuck off." Ray had no intention of participating in any schemes that other immortals were planning; he just wanted to go with his own plans.

"Oh so cold." She opened her eyes, and with her grey hair moving with the wind, she said with a casual tone, "It’s predicted that the city of the forgotten will fall by like 80 percent, so let’s go there."

"What?" Ray had not visited the city in person, but he knew among the three dominating factions on Mars, it was by far the weakest. "Why do you want to go there?"

"Everyone else is so boring; you won’t pass an opportunity like this. There will be blood and violence and strong foes all over the battlefield." Ray could see how excited she truly was about this.

"Why don’t you go alone?"

Scarlet folded her arms. "I need someone to have my back; those fuckers hate me."

Ray said with no hesitation, "Let’s go." He wanted to test his new powers, and if things got dirty, wild animals would have gone after Scarlet first. With the teleportation open to his land, he could just escape.

"You are the best! Follow me."

Spreading his wings, Ray flew on her trace across the red planet. "Didn’t the red queen prevent you from contacting me?"

"Oh, right. Fuck her."

Ray’s curiosity was piqued, but he received no answer. He asked the other important qualification, "What is your plan then?"

Scarlet stopped midair, her grey eyes fixed on him. "We kill them."

"Are the monsters that run from the second layer really a threat to your level?" Ray had that on his mind for some time; even though they had high levels, the monsters at the end of the day were just mindless beasts. With enough preparations, even he could have killed one with a few levels’ difference.

Scarlet showed a sparkling light above them. "There is not a problem on their own; the most important aspect is, when you do something in the wide open, everyone can see how you fight. The Starblaze had thousands of satellites around Mars, and with even more eyes on each battleground."

"Don’t you know the magic of everyone else? At one point you have to face one of them."

"That girl Evelyn, her last fight happened a hundred years ago; during this time she has come up with a few new tricks, probably." She paused for a minute. "The smallest details can cause a death."

After that Ray didn’t ask any more questions.

Meanwhile, around the city, things were getting messier by each minute.

"Emii..." an immortal screamed to their leader, "Another one is coming."

From the north, a snake crawled in the sky to their location; its scales shone under the sunlight, and with the scales made out of diamond, killing the monster was a hard task.

Another snake was pinned to the ground beneath them; a man kept it to the ground with his shield on its head while a white sword cut through a piece of its skin.

Emu cleaned the sweat out of her forehead; the city didn’t have a military or a super-advanced army. Most of the flood season she alone could protect the city, but now here they were inside a siege.

Behind the shield, tanks and jets rained fire on the endless wave of monsters on the ground; it couldn’t kill them; they just slowed them down for the last line standing in front of the shield while the three immortals dealt with the stronger threats.

"You two go get some rest." A sword came down from the sky; before reaching the opening on the skin of the snake, her ally’s magic increased the size of the blade by twenty times. The snake was cut in half in an instant, with its body having its last movement.

Their support, and the mayor rushed to her side. "What should we do?"

"We will hold them back as much as we can; my mother is trying to reach out to the others, but no one is answering."

"Jaya, go into the city and gather all the immortals; we will need help." The other man came to their side too. "Emi, help the front lines; if this goes on, nothing will remain out of them..."

Emi cursed inwardly; the city had 15 immortals, but among them only 9 had fighting capabilities, and a lower number would have risked their lives.

Half of her armor was already destroyed by the snake tails; with so many enemies, they had lost their momentum in the fight. Emi had to both fight and tank all the possible attacks from monsters while their tank solely focused on Jaya. As a support magic user, her capabilities were only focused on others.

The magnifying magic matched with Emi’s magic perfectly; each of the swords grew 100 times in size, and with a few pieces of equipment, it could increase her speed and mobility too. The only issue was Jaya himself was not elite in any regard; the sole reason he had become an immortal was because of his brother who worked in the Starblaze squad.

In public the two were dating for their image, but no emotional feeling existed towards him on Emi’s side at least.

She didn’t tell anyone about the anomalies; diamond snakes were only level 12, but they took out a lot of energy to kill.

All of their hopes broke as a roar shook the whole battlefield; an insect-like creature armed with ten blades as organs blocked the sunlight.

"Mantis king..." All the humans on Mars had heard about it; every entrance that had a mantis king as its guardian had never been conquered.

Emi summoned all of her swords; five white ones floated in the air around her. "I will try to buy some time, evacuate the city..."

"Wait, Emi! Its target is not us..." Jaya said with a whisper. The creature clearly waited for something.

At once everything floated in the air; humans and monsters all lost their sense of gravity, with their bodies feeling lighter.

"This magic..."

The sky crumbled as a person passed above their heads toward the mantis king; the magic fell off, and all of them fell on the ground once more.

"Why is Scarlet here?" Emi wanted to ask her mother, but something more strange happened: a man whose face she remembered vividly landed on the head of the diamond snake.

A scythe made out of bones penetrated its head like thin paper; with his wings, he dragged the scythe from its head to its tail. After a few breaths, the creature fell to the ground.

His voice echoed in the space, "If you guys want to have a chance, you should take control of that hill to the west; that’s where their paths collide the most. I will open up a path."

Emi narrowed her eyes on him; she hadn’t followed any news regarding him after the incident. However, his black robe and skin were covered in different types of blood, and the new weapon gave an eerie aura to her.

Every soldier on the field was paralyzed; the blood angel was a criminal, but he had a point.

"It’s a threat to the survival of the city..." Emi gathered her resolve. "Kai, go to the frontline and make a team of one hundred people; we will hold the hill of moonless."

Wasting no time, all of them got in their position; no one doubted Blood Angel’s abilities; after all, he was the one that went toe-to-toe with their high guard and had connections to both Starblaize and Goddess Squad.

Before heading to the battlefield herself, she checked for the news. "Hestia, do you have any information?" The main analyzer and the manager of the city’s different factions were women that Emi had found by pure chance.

Hesia’s voice rang in her head, "No, but I think that you should work with them. Scarlet is a bastard; Blood Angel is even more of a bastard, yet both of them are bloodthirsty enough to come to our help.

"Do I even have a choice?"

"No."

"Hestia, I want you to change the structure of the city, put the children and old in the center, and arm anyone that can have a weapon..."

Hestia chuckled, "Omm, we only have ammo for five hours longer..."

"Why are you going to tell me that now?" Emi took a deep breath out of anger; they barely used money on their army, it made sense. "Just how fucked are we?"
