Chapter 199: Red queen

Ray had tried everything possible: devil magic, his skull, anything that came to his mind, yet his hand couldn’t be grown back.

"Can you stop already?" The red queen had taken him to her private chamber; she sat on a throne made out of flames, but Ray had all of his focus on his hand.

Ray raised his head; the title was fitting for her. Her armor was red in every part, with her face having the same features as Cindi’s, same blue eyes and red hair; she just seemed a little older than her.

"Maybe if I mix my devil magic with your green flames, I can fix that...."

"If you want your hand, you must kill that thing." She looked down upon Ray’s figure; he was fully naked. "Its darkness is like a black hole; anything that goes inside can’t return."

Ray sighed, "You have fought it?"

"No. I wouldn’t be here if I had."

With a surprised face, he stared into her eyes. Beneath all the anger and rage, Ray could sense something else too: fear.

"Every six months, the second layer mushrooms that lighten the second layer go to a deep slumber for a month; that’s when that thing takes over the second layer."

Ray had a guess where all the information came from: "Your husband was the one who ventured into the second layer in a flood season?"

The Red Queen seemed irritated, yet she continued, "I found a record of everything they had done before their death. At first it took their limbs just like your hand; little by little it hunted them."

His thoughts were a mess; the imagination of being in complete darkness while one by one you are getting hunted was scary on its own.

"After a firstborn told us that a third layer exists, we made up all the maps; there can only be one entrance."

His lips curled into a smile. "It’s in the middle of crow territory."

"Crow?"

"My immortal ability lets me gaze at anything that I have a connection with; when I gaze at it, the head of a crow shows itself." Ray took a deep breath. "But it could infect me even in that state."

"Are you stupid?"

Ray stood up. "I needed to see it; for now, it has its eyes only on me."

"I heard you are intimate with my daughter. What do you want from her?"

If Ray said how they just fucked most of the time would be instant death, "She’s a precious friend, and I don’t want anything in return; my kindness is not a product."

"I will keep an eye on you." With a snap of her finger, a box teleported next to Ray. "It’s a mechanical hand; I destroyed your crystal farm in that place. In its place I will give you one beneath Evelyn’s base."

Ray took out the hand; it exactly was like the hand he had lost, with a few strings on its end. Connecting it to his shoulder, it started to work; however, his hand was still far superior.

"Thanks." Ray tested the hand a few times; it would take a few days for it to sync with his blood magic. "You will start searching for its fragments on the surface?"

"All the immortals should be wary about it; we have no way to stop it if it comes to the first layer."

"Can I be absent at the meeting? I already know everything."

"Be my guest."

The red queen stared at the empty place where the man had stood; he reminded her of the man she had lost, too curious to explore and with no fear in his eyes.

"Joseph, why did you have to do this?" Since the death of Cindi’s father, their squad had stopped expanding; they just kept their grip on the properties they had on Mars.

"I’m sorry, young man, but I can’t let you end up like him..."

Minutes later, Ray stood in the middle of his room.

The reason for his rush was someone from a far place wanting to tell him something. He opened his mind to the familiar parasite.

A picture came through: a mountain of crow heads with green blood dripping from them.

"Bastard wants to flex..." Ray clenched his fist; the picture made him realize the gap between the two was at least a couple of centuries or even more.

"I need a crafting station as soon as possible." At that stage, Ray’s problems more than anything were dark crystals. Checking the prices from Evelyn, only the ingredients he needed to build a place that could craft magic could cost him 3 to 4 billion dark crystals; the place itself had to be safe and huge too.

The amount of resources he needed far exceeded his current abilities. "I can take it steady and get to higher levels first..." He shook his head; it took too much time.

Only if he could find a large number of easy targets to kill...

"Flood season! But even in that I have to compete with other immortals!" Words of Evelyn flashed in his mind; they stood guard around the cities, meaning out there in the wild it was very dangerous.

Pieces of a plan slowly shaped in his mind: "I have two months to be prepared." His only other plan for the time being was to hunt down idrils and go on a date with Cindi. "Red queen wouldn’t give me some shitty crystal farm for sure; if it’s good, I can keep it for myself instead of selling it!"

A weak idea was in the back of his mind, his harem had four empty spots, and a bonus ability could be sold. "How much is good for a price point, though?"

Throwing himself on the bed, he forgot everything else; he was too tired both mentally and physically to shape a good plan in his mind.

"When I kill that crow, I will send its head to that fucking parasite too."
