Chapter 877: Into Oblivion
Asmodeus had barely finished speaking when the behemoth’s body began to quake atop the water’s surface. Its intense tremors created raging waves which clashed against the port like blades.
The millions of eyes across its island-sized body stopped gathering light. Their pupils dilated, shifting from side to side, creating an ear-grating noise.
All of a sudden, the world became silent save for Logan’s countdown.
"Five!"
’What the hell?!’
Before he could speak, several thousand eyes suddenly burst free, tearing themselves apart from the monster’s flesh and shooting into the air.
"This cannot be good..."
Asmodeus gritted his teeth, watching as the pale orbs ripped from the behemoth’s body like seeds from rotten fruit, trailing strings of black blood and abyssal flesh as they launched into the storm. They rose higher than the Valkyries, higher than the shattered clouds, before each eye cracked open from its squishy shell.
Wet wings with jagged blades, claws and strange scales unfolded.
Crooked inhuman limbs stretched out.
Then their beaks split open, revealing rows of jagged teeth.
The eyes transformed in midair, becoming small abyssal beasts with twisted bodies, blade-like claws and twitching fins along their backs. Some had long, eel-like torsos with wings made of wet membranes. Others had hunched, bird-like forms with too many joints and thin tails ending in barbed hooks.
Their flesh remained white and swollen, but black veins pulsed beneath the surface, filling them with the same disgusting energy as Leviathan.
’They’re at least three metres in size...’
Although smaller than their mother, the beasts were twice the size of the average human.
"KIIIIIIIII!"
"Lad, I can shoot now..." Logan gingerly glanced at the thousands of massive beasts now flying through the air. His confidence dented. "Or should I wait?"
A few beasts folded their wings and dove straight toward the Kraken Slayers.
"Intercept!" Asmodeus roared.
Velvet snapped her wings before rushing towards the first monsters. She crashed into the first swarm like a falling comet. Lavender flame exploded from her claws, tearing through the beasts but failing to kill them outright.
"Shit!"
It was clear they were stronger than expected as she stomped on a monster’s face, creating distance before summoning her halberd.
"Annoying little things!"
Levia and Erika backed her up with their blades and shield, but the sheer size made it difficult to deal with them easily.
Levia raised her shield and slammed it forward.
Dark lightning burst outward in a wide ring, catching a cluster of flying beasts as they tried to dive beneath the Valkyrie line. Their bodies convulsed, wings locking up before they dropped toward the sea, only to twitch back to life the moment they touched the black water.
"They can swim too!" Levia shouted.
’Of course they can...’ Asmodeus grumbled.
The creatures that fell into the harbour didn’t drown. They twisted through the waves like knives beneath silk, rushing toward the lower wall and climbing the wet stone with their claws.
Brando saw them first.
"Ground line! Incoming from below!"
Demon Knights formed a shield wall near the Kraken Slayer platform just as the first beasts crawled over the edge. Their claws struck the shields with a sharp metallic shriek, cutting grooves through reinforced armour.
Vinea descended with Balmung raised.
"Move!"
The knights split apart.
Her sword crashed down, and demonic holy fire burst across the wall in a molten wave. The beasts caught in the flames writhed and shrieked, their white bodies bubbling as black veins burst open one after another.
Rain hissed against the heat rolling from her horns.
"Damn it... my hands are still throbbing." She spat on the floor before shaking her head. "Ugly and hard to kill, what a terrible combination."
Above her, Erika and Ciela swept through the air, cutting apart any beast that slipped past their guard, but the sheer number made it feel endless.
Erika moved like a flickering shadow, striking joints and wings rather than wasting time on bodies that refused to die properly. Ciela stayed closer to the Slayers, firing countless massive arrows of pure energy, knocking away anything that aimed for Logan’s engineers.
"Three seconds!" Logan screamed from the control platform.
The second Kraken Slayer glowed brighter.
Its harpoon sat inside the barrel, the shell around its tip humming with condensed mana. This round had a single job: to destroy the monster’s defence and purify Leviathan’s insides the moment it cracked its hard shell.
Asmodeus cleaved through a swarm rushing straight toward the barrel. Axiom ripped them apart, but the pieces kept twitching as they fell, clawing at the air until demonic fire from Vinea’s last strike swallowed them.
’They’re not strong, but there are too many.’
Another cluster dropped from above.
Asmodeus raised his left hand and released a burst of demonic energy. The blood-red force crushed the first dozen beasts midair, but several twisted around the blast and aimed at the second Kraken Slayer’s mana rings.
"Not happening."
He vanished, teleporting to their location while rapidly spinning Axiom.
The beasts split apart before their claws touched the weapon, black blood scattering across the glowing runes. The mana rings flickered violently.
Logan’s scream nearly cracked.
"KEEP THEIR BLOOD OFF THE CIRCUITS!"
"Then you fucking fight them off!" Asmodeus shouted back, his brow dripping with sweat.
Leviathan watched from beyond the harbour.
The holes left by the torn eyes bled down its massive body, yet new pale dots slowly formed beneath the flesh, pushing upward like fresh blisters. It could produce more. Thousands more.
Maybe endlessly.
The thought made Asmodeus’s smile sharpen.
’So you want to overwhelm us, you little bastard?’
The ancient beast’s countless remaining eyes began to glow again.
"Shit!"
As if it could hear his mental curses, the beast didn’t give them a moment to think as its body shone with a dark light. However, Asmodeus noticed the eyes also seemed to lock onto the smaller beasts.
’The hell is going on?’
Black beams struck the beasts from behind, not killing them but filling their bodies with light. The transformed eyes swelled, their claws lengthening, wings splitting into extra membranes as their bodies became faster, sharper, more grotesque.
Velvet clicked her tongue as she crushed a beast under her scaled boot, "It can strengthen them too!?"
The instant an enhanced beast slammed down against Levia’s shield, it cracked under the pressure, sending arcs of dark lightning across her pale flesh.
"Ngh!"
Asmodeus moved toward her, but another beam cut across his path. He deflected it with Axiom, sending it into the sea where it exploded in a tower of boiling black water.
"Two seconds!" Logan roared.
The swarm descended all at once.
Thousands of abyssal beasts dropped from the sky and surged from the water, converging on the second Kraken Slayer from every direction. Valkyries intercepted the upper wave. Demon Knights held the wall. Vinea carved a molten path across the ground while Velvet used her dragon’s breath to the point of vomiting and dry heaving.
Still, several broke through.
One beast landed on the Kraken Slayer’s barrel.
Its claws dug into the glowing metal.
Asmodeus rushed towards it, teleporting several times, only for a green flash to reach it first.
Before he reached it, Ciela’s arrow pierced the creature’s throat and ripped it free from the cannon. She darted across the cannon before throwing the twitching body into the storm, where Erika cut it apart midair.
"One second!"
The second Kraken Slayer’s runes burned so brightly that the entire wall turned purple.
Asmodeus spread his wings in front of the weapon, Axiom raised as the last wave of beams and beasts rushed toward him together.
"Fire, Logan!"
"GRRRRRRRRR!"
Yet as if anticipating something... the behemoth suddenly moved, raising itself from the ocean and suddenly revealing a giant mouth... like a shark spread across its abdomen.
The unsightly maw suddenly opened, revealing massive jagged teeth and an oversized tongue.
The sight made Asmodeus’s instincts scream.
"Logan!"
"I SEE IT!"
The old dwarf no longer sounded frightened. His voice cracked with pure madness as he grabbed the firing lever with both hands. Around him, engineers ducked beneath shields while abyssal beasts slammed against the Demon Knights protecting the platform.
Leviathan’s tongue rose inside that monstrous mouth.
At its tip, darkness gathered.
A perfectly round mass of void condensed above the tongue, swallowing rain, wind, sound, and even the light from the Kraken Slayer’s runes. The storm bent toward it. The ocean beneath Leviathan sank as if the world itself were being pulled into that single point.
Asmodeus felt his skin crawl.
’If that fires...’
The vision of Velvet, Levia, Vinea, Erika and Ciela... all of them suffering wounds... even dying flashed before his eyes as he raised his fingertip.
’I really didn’t want to do this again...’
Preparing to use his own attack, Asmodeus unfurled his wings to the limit, helping to counterbalance the force Sanguine Devastation created.
Yet to his surprise.
Logan roared until his throat tore.
"SECOND KRAKEN SLAYER!"
The harpoon’s multicoloured light reached its peak, while the Leviathan’s tongue twitched.
"FIRE!"
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
The second Kraken Slayer launched.
The wall cracked beneath the recoil as the modified harpoon tore through the storm. It shot like a beam of light and pierced between Leviathan’s jagged teeth, and vanished straight into the darkness gathering on its tongue.
But...
There was no explosion.
As if laughing, the behemoth’s throat sounded.
"Gihihihihihihi!"
The noise was jarring as the dark orb at the tip of its tongue suddenly burst, firing a condensed beam of pure abyssal energy towards the pier.
"Get down!"
"Flee!"
"AHHHHHH!"
Asmodeus watched as the beam approached, cutting through the water, dissolving, corrupting, and evaporating seawater like nothing else.
"!!!!!!!!!"
As he sucked in the air to shout...
BOOOM!
A deafening explosion sounded from the Behemoth’s stomach.
