Chapter 211: The Kiss Of The Singularity Bifrost

[FROLO]

"Everything is so fucked up, man. I don’t think I have it in me to deal with Milan and her theories tonight. I’ll crash here," Yaroslav had said when he walked into Nik’s house at seven o’clock in the evening.

The beta looked at this oddly, like there was more to it, yet he couldn’t even place it right.

"Yaro... Have you seen the news?" Nikolai asked as he stared at his best friend, who seemed so tired from the day’s events.

"Nope, not interested. Everyone is already talking about what father did. I don’t have the energy to listen to any more of their theories about the devil of Frolo. As a matter of fact, I brought us beer.

"Let’s get wasted as we play video games," Yaroslav said casually, like he was not in the mood for anything that had happened in Frolo again. The most important one was one he had already dealt with.

He’d stayed in the office for long hours just to make sure there wasn’t a thing that could hurt his father.

And right now, he needed something to take his mind away from all the fiasco and the shit that people were posting about, now that his father had saved the senator because Katya was the senator’s boyfriend.

Nikolai could tell that his friend didn’t know more about what had happened. Or maybe he knew and just didn’t want to talk about it. That was more like Yaro. So, Nik didn’t push.

Instead, they went to the gaming room.

For hours, they played, like it was all they could do. Occasionally drinking away their thoughts of the day, shifting between games when they got bored. It wasn’t that hard to keep going because the next day was, after all, Saturday.

"I’m sorry about the babies, man," Nikolai said mid-game at four o’clock when they were in the middle of a new game.

Yaroslav stared at him, confused.

"Goodness, how many cans have you downed so far that you’re already speaking about babies?" Yaro laughed as they kept playing.

But Nik didn’t laugh.

"The mi... miscarriage?" Nik said even though it came off as a question. Honestly, there was no way to embrace that truth. It was hard even for him. And he wasn’t as directly affected as his friend.

"Dude, focus. We’re going to be bested. Besides, everything is fine," Yaroslav insisted before they went back to the game.

But Nikolai...

Nik had never been one to drown his emotions away.

So, he set the controller aside, throwing the game.

And Yaroslav was pissed.

It was five o’clock in the morning.

"What the fuck, man?"

"I should be asking you that!! I get it. You and Katya are separated, and all that shit. But dude, those doctors just confirmed your husband wasn’t barren, and they’d been making sure his pregnancies didn’t survive!

"They even said the miscarriage he had on his anniversary, the day your father shot you, was initiated by them! So how the fuck can you sit here and pretend like it’s all okay?! What the fuck!!" Nikolai shouted.

Yaroslav froze suddenly, the controller slipping from his hands, his brain trying to catch up with what Nik had just said.

"Wh... What confession, Nik? What do you mean?" Yaroslav asked carefully, a part of him hoping he had gotten it all wrong.

But his best friend didn’t buy that shit.

So in his rage, Nik shifted the screens and opened the video confession that had been making rounds the entire day and let it play for his friend.

"Process that shit! I’m going to bed. Your ex-husband was failed," Nik said before he walked out, leaving Yaroslav staring at the screen, watching shit unfold in the kind of ways that he had not expected.

The faces on the screen were familiar.

All of them.

Even the ones dead on the floor.

Yaroslav knew them because he had gone to all those appointments with Katya.

He had been there every step of the way. Every moment in those offices. The only place he didn’t step into was the therapy session because he wanted his husband to have his own time.

But he was always there.

Always supporting Katya.

Always telling him that he would be fine. That they didn’t need a baby. That they were happy like they were.

But the societal pressure had gotten to his husband.

And each time, Katya subjected himself to different examinations. To different procedures just so they could have their baby.

Yaroslav hurt for his husband each time.

Because he loved Katya. He didn’t want a baby if they couldn’t have one. He wanted Katya. The baby was just a bonus. But his husband wanted a baby, and Yaro didn’t have it in him to say no to Katya.

So he’d followed him through every appointment. To be there for him. To support him regardless of the outcome. Because Katya was always going to be the most important person in his life after his dad.

For five years, they had gone to the clinics, hospitals, and fertility specialists. They had done everything they could, and still the answer had been the same. Katya was not able to carry a child.

Yaroslav had held his husband as he cried every time the answer never changed.

He protected Katya in the only way he could. He did everything to keep Katya safe. Everything. Everyone was whispering, sure, but they knew better than to hound Yaroslav’s husband that openly.

It was peaceful even if Katya still kept going to the appointments, but he never faulted him. Never once blamed him. His answer had always been the same.

"I love you for who you are. Not for what you can give me."

But eventually Yaroslav’s love proved weak against the pressures of society.

Against the pain that Katya was going through.

So he reached out to Milan. He knew it wasn’t fair. He knew it wasn’t right. But he couldn’t watch Katya cry every night because of a baby.

His plan had always been simple for Milan:

Get Milan to trust him again.

Get Milan pregnant.

Tell Katya that the baby was born through a surrogate.

Kill Milan after the baby was delivered.

Take the baby to Katya and say that he adopted the baby.
