Chapter 160: Kiss Me Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars

[FROLO]

Katya should have gone back home.

He knew it.

But he couldn’t find it in himself to leave the building. Not when he had just reported back.

Or maybe he was not ready to go back to Alek’s home and watch the senator try to look for clues to the decapitated head that they would never get.

It had always been like that with the Moskowskys. If they wanted a murder in their name, they announced it first. But they had not announced, and it was something that bothered Katya.

On one end was the good senator, a good boyfriend who cared about Katya.

While on the other was the Moskowsky circus he had found himself in.

Was it a circus this time, though?

"Rahim, I won’t take any calls or meetings today. Please schedule them for the day my leave ends," Katya said when he got back to his office.

It was pointless staying in Sergei’s and being so affected by the calm rainforest. Perhaps it was the only way to clear his mind.

After all, he had left his phone here, and he needed to reach out to his friends and at least let them know he was alive. He had informed them earlier, but it wouldn’t hurt to do it a second time as proof of life, no?

"Noted, sir. Have a good day," Rahim said.

Katya just smiled at her, a stark contrast to the man who had been rowdy earlier. Well, if it was any comfort, Katya didn’t even want to think of his embarrassing moments earlier.

"You too," Katya said as he pushed open the door to his office.

Then he stilled, the door closing lightly behind him.

Rainforest scent.

It was all over this office.

Almost like Sergei had been here more than once.

Of course, there was the possibility that he’d come to take measurements, or maybe to see if there were any official documents that were pending.

But Katya...

He could smell the thick rainforest even as he got deeper into his office.

This was no coincidence.

Or maybe Sergei should have come before he decided to take out the journalist?

Katya had so many questions at the moment.

Until, of course, his subconscious struck again.

’Pretending not to see the obvious bad won’t make it go away.’

Right.

The bag.

The one who reeled the most for Sergei Moskowsky.

’Maybe he left you some clues in there.’

What clues, though? Was that even a need?

"Or he left me a warning letter for my divorce suggestion."

’Don’t be stupid. The man just said he wouldn’t interfere.’

"Great. So, I can’t even have a pity party. How nice."

’Open the bag and end this.’

"No. I’m here to work," Katya insisted, as if he was trying to make sense of anything.

Then again, there was nothing to make sense of at the moment.

Absolutely nothing.

And even he knew it.

Sergei never went back on his word, but it didn’t make this any easier for him.

So begrudgingly, the omega reached for the bag that smelled the strongest of Sergei in here. Part of him didn’t know what was there, especially when he lifted the bag, and it stayed light.

But a part of him was.

Because this was probably one of those days when he needed to think of anything other than the head at the senator’s gate.

When he opened it, there was nothing out of the ordinary.

Just the sweater, his phone, the scarf, and the water bottle with an S mark that matched the head at the gates.

And the fresh thick rainforest scent reminded him that Sergei had scented them.

Or maybe he had taken them back?

Katya was confused.

Maybe he was getting delirious because he had a damn dream and had somehow managed to end up in Sergei’s office. That was all there was to this.

That was what he would believe even as he turned on his phone and sat at his desk. He needed to focus on something else.

Something like work.

Or the divorce papers that had been sitting in his lower drawer for the past three months.

The papers he had drafted the week Erika was born, and the trolls were on his case more than once. The papers that were his only chance at freedom.

Katya knew back then that it would be a long fight with the divorce papers, especially given the fact that Sergei had not said shit about Yaroslav cheating and the marriage back then.

But now he had a real chance of getting separated from his husband because of how he ruined his life.

"It’s the only choice left," Katya said as he pulled the two-page divorce papers from his desk.

He knew the Moskowskys would never give him anything. And honestly, with the months he had had, Katya didn’t want anything from the divorce.

He just wanted to be free from Yaroslav. He didn’t care about the assets or whatever Yaroslav could use to fight him and slay the procedure.

He just wanted a clean divorce.

Besides, they had a whole city as witnesses to their marriage not working.

And even better...

This way, he wouldn’t have to get crazy stares from people whenever he was out with the senator. They always mocked him in fake silence, and Katya heard them all.

Still, he’d never cared because he believed that he had no leverage or even a way out.

But now he has.

Finally, he had a chance.

Because fighting Yaroslav wasn’t hard. It was Sergei’s Moskowsky familial beliefs that had always been a threat to Katya.

Yet now even Sergei had stepped back.

Katya was still staring at the papers when his phone rang. He’d turned it on and used his divorce, but then maybe there was someone else to reach out to?

Well, it was a conference video call.

From his friends.

"I’m alive and here is proof of life," Katya spoke first as he turned the camera to himself, making his friends stare at him amusedly.
