Chapter 159: Looking Back To The Start Now, Everything’s True
[FROLO]
"Oh, gods, what the fuck is wrong with you? I’m divorcing your son! YOUR son! And all you have to say to it is offer me food?" Katya asks in frustration.
"He made his bed. He’s gotta lie on it. Why do I have to stop you from getting your freedom, Solnyshka? If the senator makes you happy, go for it. Besides, you said you’re doing it for yourself. Be happy. You deserve it.
"... And if that means getting a divorce from my son, no one will stop you," Sergei said, his voice at the end so serious that Katya had to step back for a moment.
Sergei Moskowsky was approving a divorce?
Sergei?
Who was this man, and what the fuck had happened?
"You won’t threaten me with the assets and the help you gave my family? Or the contract I signed?" Katya asked in earnest confusion, and Sergei listened to him.
Again, the rainforest scent was hitting Katya harder than he had thought possible, even though he’d been in this room for a long time. And the fact that it was calming him like it always did confused Katya even more.
But still, he had to be sure this was not a trap.
"I’m a man of my word, Solnyshka. I swore to give you freedom, and I gave it, no strings attached. You have a life to live. You’re a beautiful young omega. You can’t waste your life waiting for someone who’s always moving on.
"If you think the divorce is what you want, then do it. If my son tries anything, I’ll stop him myself. I did promise to protect you, too. And I’ll do that, even if my son is the one I have to protect you from," Sergei said in earnest.
Katya felt his eyes pooling with tears.
This man was so annoying and consuming.
Where Katya expected madness, he got a sane man.
Where Katya expected a sane man, he got a mad man.
Where Katya expected threats, he got protection.
Where Katya expected protection, he got protection.
There was no reasonable way to understand Sergei, and frankly, Katya was even more confused now than ever.
This man was staying true to his word. He was not trying to push Katya into what Katya didn’t want. And now Katya asks himself what the alpha truly wanted with him. But at the same time, Katya had seen the documents.
He was free.
Everything was his.
He didn’t have to fight losing battles anymore.
He had power and loyalty.
Sergei Moskowsky being loyal to him was the one thing that Katya Romanov had never expected.
"You can’t just say that and expect nothing. It’s not fair," Katya said, wiping angry tears on his face.
He couldn’t believe that this was how things had gotten, but then what the hell was he to do now that he had confirmed it himself? Katya just had to accept that truth because, at the end of the day, there was never going to be an easy way out.
"You’re alive. You’re healthy. You don’t have to worry about meeting societal standards anymore. You are happy. There’s nothing more I could ask of you, Romanov," Sergei said, like it was genuinely the prayer he had ever had for Katya.
Like that was all he wanted for the omega, truly.
To be alive.
To be healthy.
To be happy.
And Katya stood there, confused as to what had gotten into the man.
Sergei Moskovsky was the devil. He was the man people ran away from. And now that same man had called him Solnyshka, Romanov, and beautiful in a span of under twenty minutes.
All without expecting anything?
What the fuck?
No one had ever been that kind of Katya.
No one had ever done to Katya what Sergei was doing, and the fact that he was being annoyingly selfless about it trampled on the assumptions that Katya could have leaned into.
He couldn’t even say that Sergei was baiting him because the man had never baited him. And he stayed there, confused even more because this was Sergei Moskowsky.
The most feared man in Frolo was reminding him that he agreed and was still determined to protect him.
This had to be a dream.
That was the only logical explanation.
"Live your life, Solnyshka," Sergei added.
Katya stressed that the man genuinely worried.
"Are you terminally ill?" Katya asked, his words making Sergei choke on air.
The alpha definitely did not expect that.
He was giving the omega more freedom, and the omega thought he was terminally ill? But then again, it sounded like something that Katya Romanov would lean into.
Sergei couldn’t help but chuckle at that.
"I’m sorry, but you are Sergei Moskowsky, and unless you’re dying, I don’t see where the fuck your kindness comes from. Is this some sort of a wish list for you? Atoning for what your son did?
"Is that why you took out the journalist who was tormenting me and the trolls, too?" Katya asked, and Sergei let out a laugh.
A genuine laugh that had Katya staggering backward.
Not because of fear.
Because there it was again.
The sound that had haunted his dreams.
From the man who looked exactly like he had in his dreams.
Shaggy beard, messy hair, eyes that held the world in them in amusement, the sincerity that Katya hadn’t even known how to translate.
It was just like his dream again.
And the fact that Sergei had fed him got him even more confused.
Because Sergei was not supposed to be kind.
Not to someone separating from his family.
Not to someone, he did not sign a prenuptial agreement when Yaroslav married Katya. It was what was expected. How families like the Moskowsky family always moved. But now...
This man was asking for nothing in return while laughing like Katya was not trying to make sense of everything all at once.
But then again, what were the odds of this mess being insane even more?
"And I told you already. It’s not my fault you won’t believe me. Anyway, I have a meeting in ten. Don’t skip lunch again, chairman," Sergei shrugged before he got up and stepped out, leaving Katya in his office.
