Chapter 157: Morning Has Come, And I Have To Go
[FROLO]
"So, why did you come to my office, chairman?" Sergei asked, willing himself to stay on topic because if he steered off again, he would lose his mind and everything he had worked so hard for to this point.
Katya was off limits.
Katya had a boyfriend.
Katya had spent the heat with his boyfriend.
Katya had come to his office in his boyfriend’s clothes.
Katya still reeled of his boyfriend.
Oh, but Sergei was making the mental checklist in his head to keep his heart steady.
But fuck, it was hard.
Because this was the closest he had ever been to Katya since the hospital. And he didn’t even know how to function properly.
Maybe he shouldn’t have kicked Volkov out.
Maybe he should have called Naya to be in the same space as him.
Because even with the senator’s scent on Katya, Sergei could still find his lead breathing in the citrus scent he had been starved for for months.
Oh, he was doomed.
"Why did you send the head to my alpha’s house?" Katya asked, the possessiveness in his tone so simple, yet those two words and Sergei’s life restring.
Because the alpha restores the distance that has been between them.
Even the desire to eat was gone.
But Sergei couldn’t exactly show how he was feeling.
So, he bit down on his food. Taking on small portions as if that would change the fact that he absolutely did not like the way Katya sounded so possessive when he referred to Senator Aleksandr as his boyfriend.
"It was a gift for you. I’d send it to your penthouse, but I was informed you went with the senator," Sergei said, his answer simple like his heart wasn’t aching already.
Like, he didn’t feel like screaming at someone for what he was seeing right now.
But then he had to remain calm.
Because Katya was not his enemy.
And he didn’t want Katya to be scared of him.
The fact that Katya had come this far just to scold him was enough proof that maybe, just maybe, the fear was starting to go away. And Sergei wasn’t about to ruin that with his petty jealousy.
He would rant to Anya later anyway.
Would it help, though?
"A gift? You’re crazy," Katya said, finally focusing on the conversation.
He couldn’t even begin to think of the kind of logic Sergei worked on or with, because this man was making him lose his mind, fast. What was that even supposed to mean?
Ho even sent decapitated heads to people in the name of gifting?
"I eliminated a threat and sent you proof," Sergei chuckled like it was the best thing he had ever done with his time.
And maybe to him it was.
Because now the journalist wouldn’t be bothering his Solnyshka anymore.
"I didn’t ask for that!" Katya said, his voice rising, but Sergei just stared sheepishly.
If anything, he continued eating his food like he had suddenly gotten his appetite back.
Well, it wasn’t a far stretch anyway.
After all, his Solnyshka was talking to him.
Granted, the omega was annoyed, but Sergei would take that over his acres Katya had been of him on that white suit day in the office months ago.
"Fine then," Sergei said, like he was letting things be.
Katya let out a sigh of relief for a moment because finally, they were getting somewhere. Maybe Sergei was finally being rational.
Well, it was a good line of thought...
Until the barbarian spoke again.
"I won’t send you any more proof when I kill an annoying rat again," Sergei said happily, and Katya stared at the alpha.
Really stared.
This man was unbelievable.
What the fuck was he even doing?
What the hell was he onto?
"You can’t just go around killing people... For me," Katya shouted in frustration, though the last bit came off in a low tone like he couldn’t believe that this shit was happening.
"You’re still family. And family kills for family. Don’t you already know that by now?" Sergei said like it was normal.
Katya wasn’t even sure what to say about that.
He knew he was going to change that familial aspect.
He had already told Alek about it.
And if this was the argument Sergei was using, maybe it was a good time to tell them, man, that he was divorcing his son? Would the barbarian agree, though? Would he be open to letting Katya go free?
Would it even make any sense right now?
Katya knew the Moskowskys were crazy.
He had lived with them.
Seen what they did to people they didn’t like.
Now this man was telling him he had sent that head for him, and he wasn’t even sure if he was supposed to be creeped out as usual or if he was to say thank you.
But murder was not okay.
Katya refused to lean into that darkness that this family walked around with.
Maybe he wasn’t bothered by it back then as much because it all sounded so simple. But after the head that had been sent, Katya knew someone had to stop them.
Besides, it wouldn’t make sense for him to have them do whatever the fuck they wanted for him when he was leaving.
Sergei had said the contract marriage was just to help him. And maybe he hadn’t processed that. Yet somehow, a part of Katya knew the man had processed their marriage.
But would Sergei be open to a formal divorce with Yaroslav?
"I am getting a divorce," Katya said, his words so careful yet so confident that for a moment, Katya himself couldn’t believe that he was doing this. Spelling it out for the one man would probably ruin his life and leave him with nothing.
But there was no going back. How was it there?
Sergei stared at the omega.
Really stared like he was not sure what the fuck the man was on about for a moment there.
It was as if this was the most unexpected of things, but maybe a part of him should have been ready too, when he set Katya free, right?
"A divorce..." Sergei said the words were foreign to him.
