Chapter 156: And Who Says Love Should Break Us When We Fall?
[FROLO]
’He’s working. He’s busy, that’s why his phone is on speaker mode. Maybe he does this all the time.’
’Why are you bothered about a man’s phone and what he does?’
’I’m not. I just need him to get the fuck out so I can jump through the window and get away from here.’
’Quite the brain you got there after rushing without thinking twice.’
’Oh goodness. Do you ever shut up?’
’Yup. I’ll shut up... You might want to focus on your apparent jailer’s phone call now.’
’Hold on. What is that supposed to mean?’ Katya asked, but again, his subconscious finally let him be.
And Katya was glad for it.
Until he heard Sergei laugh.
Until he heard the other voice on the phone.
Irina.
’Great.’
So, Katya waited.
"You haven’t told me how your day is going yet," Irina asked, and Katya rolled his eyes at that. He was dying of hunger and embarrassment while they were going about their day.
What a clown he was.
"Really interesting. Just trying to feed someone," Sergei said, and Katya’s body reacted before Katya could think.
The omega sat up.
Fast.
Only when he saw Sergei looking at him in confusion did he realize how crazy he looked.
Oh, Katya.
But then Katya wasn’t about to relent.
So, he grabbed one of the packages, opened it, and stuffed his face with food.
Maybe if he ate a lot, he would forget how he had gotten himself into this predicament.
Maybe he would get the chance to see Sergei distracted and bold from his office.
Because this was the kind of shit that even he couldn’t explain.
"Ah, you haven’t eaten properly in five days, Sergei. I’m glad your stomach finally pushed you to a solution," Irina said on the other end, and Katya turned to Sergei.
He hadn’t eaten?
Five days?
That had to be some joke.
And Katya, he couldn’t explain it, but he was worried for the man.
Only that Katya would willingly eat raw cement than admit his worry for this obnoxious barbarian. Then again, surgery had people to take care of him. If he didn’t eat, that was his problem, right?
"I’m fine," Sergei said stiffly, his tone changing.
"Alright, alright. I’ll drop it. Anyway, your delivery to the senator’s residence was complete. You don’t have to spend five more days hunting that journo. You already killed him. Get some sleep.
"The heavens know you need it. I’ll call back in the evening, you better be sleeping then," Irina said, making Katya wonder what the fuck the alpha’s deal was with the journalist and the senator.
Maybe the head wasn’t even about Katya after all.
Maybe it was about the senator seeing how Sergei had hunted for the man.
And once again, Katya wished the ground beneath him would open up and swallow him. What the fuck had he walked into?
"Yeah," was all Sergei said before hanging up.
The silence that followed could only be silenced by Katya’s eating.
Maybe that was what it was like to Katya because he figured if his mouth was busy and his brain occupied, he would forget that he had eavesdropped on a conversation that confirmed his own insanity and audacity.
And he would simply walk away with the food.
That sounded like a better idea in his head.
But of course...
His mouth spewed before his brain could process shit.
"There’s enough food here, Vladimir," Katya said, like it was the only thing that made sense at the moment, and maybe it was.
But for Sergei...
The man stared at Katya as if he had just discovered a hidden gem, while Katya was beating himself internally for not using his brain where it was needed.
"Thank you, Solnyshka," Sergei said, his sincerity confusing Katya even more. Especially when the barbarian stepped from behind his desk and came to the table where Katya was eating.
’Someone please save me,’ was all Katya could think when Sergei sat right beside Katya.
There was a reasonable distance between them.
The kind that no one could get suspicious about. And it was realistic, seeing as there was only one couch in the office, but goddam Katya could hit him straight.
All he could focus on was the way Sergei smelled in his dream and how it had intensified here now.
"There’s some ketchup on your—" Sergei said, grabbing a tissue to help Katya out.
And Katya...
Oh, he could remember it all.
The forehead kiss.
The shared spoon.
The thumb pressing gently on his lips.
His whole dream from four days ago had become the very reason he could even think with ease. What kind of fate was this?
"Thanks, I got it," Katya said, wiping the corner of his mouth roughly.
And Sergei chuckled.
"Let me help, Solnyshka," Sergei said, and Katya froze.
That stupid deep voice again.
But Katya wasn’t trying to live out his stupid dream.
So, he grabbed the tissue from Sergei and wiped his whole mouth with it. That way, he covered all possibilities, yeah?
Well, it wasn’t that simple.
Because now Sergei was staring at him in amusement.
Like Katya was an animal in the zoo.
Or maybe it was all in Katya’s head.
Maybe that was why he didn’t even realize the moment Sergei gently held his jaw, another tissue in his hand, their faces so close, as the alpha wiped the corners of his lips gently like a man who was trying not to cause any harm.
"Don’t be stubborn, Solnyshka," Sergei chuckled as he wiped the ketchup off finally.
And Katya froze for a moment.
Meanwhile, Sergei’s heart was going two hundred over seventy. The man was literally hyperventilating because he was so close to the man he cared about.
Holding Katya like that had Sergei’s brain resetting.
But of course, he snapped out of it really fast.
Faster than Katya had.
"So, why did you come to my office, chairman?" Sergei asked, willing himself to stay on topic because if he steered off again, he would lose his mind and everything he had worked so hard for to this point.
