Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Have You Ever Trusted Me?
"Asher, how could this be?" Kenneth’s murderous eyes blazed with hatred. Summer was only in this state because he had used witchcraft on her. ’To think Asher would stoop to something so vicious. If the witchcraft isn’t controlled properly, she could die at any moment.’
"I’ve already woken her up as promised," Asher replied nonchalantly, toying with a ring on his finger. "The fact that her mind won’t return to her body just means she doesn’t want to wake up. She doesn’t want to face you!"
"Boss!" Ronan Jenkins and Sean Murphy arrived on the rooftop just then. They were clearly unwell, but the gravity of the situation didn’t allow for rest.
"Well, well. Did you two enjoy my little welcome?" Asher jeered, his eyes fixed on the water dripping from their clothes and their damp hair.
Ronan and Sean ignored Asher’s taunts. Ronan ran to Kenneth’s side. "Boss, what is it? Is Summer okay?" Soaking wet, he was careful to keep his distance from her.
"Take her and go. Find Dominic—he’ll know what to do!" Kenneth placed Summer’s hand into Sean’s. Sean flinched at her temperature. They were the ones who had just been freezing, yet Summer’s hand was even colder than theirs, a cold that felt unnatural for a living person.
"Boss..." Ronan stepped toward Kenneth and gripped his arm, his expression fraught with worry. He wanted to stop him, but he knew in his heart that once Kenneth made a decision, no one could change his mind.
"Get her out of here!" Kenneth snarled, shaking off Ronan’s grip. His expression was grim and ruthless. The only path was forward; retreat simply wasn’t in his vocabulary.
Capable people always find a way to thrive, and that included finding a way to stay alive. The woman he loved and the people who loved him were all waiting for him. Even if he were gravely wounded, he would never abandon his convictions.
Left with no other choice, Ronan and Sean took Summer and departed from the rooftop. They had to trust that Kenneth could protect himself. Summer was back, and he had to survive to see her again. They evacuated quickly and soon contacted Dominic Thorne, getting Summer onto a helicopter. However, her vacant gaze left them deeply unsettled. Kenneth had stared at Summer for a long time, lost in thought, but had said nothing more.
Suddenly, a fierce wind whipped across the rooftop, as if sensing the powerful, murderous auras emanating from Kenneth and Asher. Dressed in black, Kenneth stared viciously at the man before him. His pupils transformed, shimmering with a radiant red light.
"Alright. You can tell me your real purpose now," Kenneth said, his gaze as sharp as a blade, piercing right through Asher’s schemes. "I can’t be bothered with your petty tricks. Did you think putting Summer in that state would leave me, Kenneth Yates, with no way to save her? Hmph. You’re far too naive, Asher."
"My goal was never that woman. Nor was it Thea Shaw. I want you!"
"Can you please not say such disgusting things?" Kenneth took a small step back and laughed. "We’re in a life-or-death standoff here. You’re going to give me the wrong idea!" ’Is this guy trying to lighten the mood? His timing is terrible.’
Asher suddenly lowered his head, his gaze dimming. A moment later, glistening tears welled in the corners of his eyes, falling drop by drop onto the dark rooftop.
