Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Past Life, Us

"Why do you never trust me? You never acknowledged me back in school, and you still don’t believe me now! I’m not joking with you. My goal, from the very beginning, has always been you." Asher threw his head back and roared at Kenneth Yates, his voice raw with anguish. It was as if years of pent-up resentment and confusion had erupted in that single moment. The words were out, and there was no taking them back—everything he had kept locked away in the deepest corner of his heart.

Kenneth frowned and averted his gaze. He genuinely hadn’t realized Asher had these kinds of feelings for him. Back in school, Asher had always presented himself as an innocent junior, and Kenneth had simply thought of him as an ambitious, artistic young man. He never imagined that Asher approaching him from the very start had been a calculated move. As for his artistic works, they were truly subpar; it wasn’t a matter of Kenneth not believing in Asher.

Seconds ticked by in silence. Asher’s scorching gaze was fixed on Kenneth, but Kenneth refused to meet it.

"So? What do you want now? I’m right here." Kenneth thought for a long moment. ’I have to figure out his intentions first so I can find the right way to handle this. Besides, he still has Summer Lancaster under his control.’

"Why does *that woman* get to have you and love you? She’s not worthy! So, I made her hate you. Now that she hates you, do you still love her?" Asher’s voice was laced with glee, a satisfied smile on his face. ’He’s about to give me the answer I want.’

"I do," Kenneth answered without hesitation.

Asher’s smile froze on his face. His hands clenched into tight fists. He couldn’t accept it. ’Love is supposed to be returned! Since Summer Lancaster won’t love him anymore, why does he still say he loves her?’

"Fine! If I can’t have you, then no one can! Let’s perish together, Kenneth!" Asher drew the longsword at his side, lunged toward Kenneth, and viciously stabbed him in the chest.

Blood. Bright red blood splattered everywhere. Kenneth clutched his chest and collapsed to the ground. As he fell, the book of his family’s origin slipped out from his coat, becoming soaked in his blood. But then, the book began to emit a golden glow, and scenes from the past flashed before his eyes...

The Brown Family was cursed, its members doomed to die young generation after generation. However, it was said they could obtain anything they desired before their death. They were a terrifying family, known by all, yet no one had ever actually seen a member of the Brown Family in person. Theirs was a dreadful reputation, and the mere thought of them struck fear into people’s hearts.

In that era, Asher was Kenneth’s most loyal servant.

Asher did his utmost to serve and protect Kenneth. Having grown up together, the two shared an uncommonly close bond. Kenneth valued Asher deeply, seeing him not as a servant, but as his best friend.

As they grew into men, they became like brothers. Yet, Kenneth always felt there was something strange in the way Asher looked at him, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He tried to ignore it, but Asher’s gaze was so intense it was impossible not to grow suspicious.

Later, the family carefully selected a gentle and graceful woman for Kenneth. The two fell in love at first sight, and Kenneth cherished her, hoping they would be together until the end. But Asher, standing by, grew more and more vicious in his gaze. He even began pointing out the woman’s flaws to slander her. His malicious expression deeply worried Kenneth, who finally sent someone to investigate him.
