Chapter 308: Meat

The moment Isis spoke those calm words, the entire group surged into action like a dam bursting under pressure. The desert, which had been holding its breath, erupted into chaos and violence.

The men shot forward without a single shouted order or wasted second, their bodies moving so quickly they became streaks of color against the golden sand. They kicked up long trails of dust that sparkled in the light from the five suns, resembling shards of broken glass in the air.

Before the horse-scorpion beasts could even lunge, the first impacts landed hard and fast. The sharp sound of metal striking chitin rang out across the empty dunes.

This was not just a battle; it was a dismantling, a one-sided blitz that unfolded like a choreographed storm where every warrior knew precisely where to strike and how to maintain momentum without ever slowing down.

At the front of the charge was the scarred warrior from earlier, his heavy broadsword already drawn and swinging in wide arcs that flashed like lightning in the sunlight. He closed in on the nearest beast with a single bounding step.

The creature reared up, its multiple eyes glowing and scorpion tail whipping forward at blinding speed, but he was faster. Ducking low under its strike, he drove his blade upward in a brutal rising slash that sliced through its armored chest.

Dark ichor sprayed out in thick ropes, hissing and smoking as it hit the hot sand while the monster let out a wet screech that echoed across the dunes.

He didn’t stop there; spinning on his heel, he brought his sword around in a horizontal cut that severed two of its powerful legs simultaneously.

The massive creature crashed sideways with a heavy thud, sending sand flying in all directions. Another beast attempted to flank him from the side, its stinger glowing with sickly green venom.

In response, he twisted mid-step, grabbed its tail with one gloved hand, and used its own momentum to slam it down onto its companion before finishing both off with two swift downward thrusts that punched through their skulls and pinned them to the ground.

Right beside him moved two other warriors in perfect sync as if they had rehearsed this exact scenario countless times before.

One slid low across the sand with curved daggers drawn, slipping between the legs of a leading monster before springing upward to drive both blades deep into its soft underbelly. He twisted hard as he pulled free; steaming organs spilled out across the dunes.

At that precise moment, his partner used his shoulder as leverage to launch himself high into the air, bringing down a massive war hammer with crushing force onto another creature’s head.

The impact was so tremendous that it caved in skulls and caused multiple eyes to pop from pressure while sinking several inches into the sand as if struck by a falling boulder.

The two warriors pressed on, seamlessly transitioning from one target to the next. Their strikes were precise and unyielding, while the rest of their group formed a loose circle around the growing heap of defeated monsters.

The once-empty stretch of desert transformed into a chaotic arena filled with blood and dust.

More beasts erupted from beneath the dunes, drawn by the noise and scent of fresh kills. Their numbers swelled until it seemed like they were encircled by a writhing wall of chitin and venom. Yet, Isis’s men maintained their focus.

One warrior wielded a long spear, impaling a creature clean through its side before using it as leverage to swing onto its back. He rode the thrashing monster like a bucking horse, stabbing repeatedly at the gaps in its armor until it finally collapsed in a heap. Another fighter relied on brute strength, grabbing two smaller beasts by their segmented tails and swinging them like living flails to smash them into their companions, creating a domino effect of crashing bodies and spraying ichor.

The corrosive venom arced through the air, sizzling wherever it landed, but the men dodged or blocked with practiced ease, one even caught a stinger mid-swing and yanked the beast off balance before driving his fist straight through its jaw with enough force to shatter bone. They laughed as they fought, wild, excited laughter that mingled with roars and hisses, turning the scene into something almost joyful for them: a feast of movement and power where every monster was merely meat waiting to be carved up.

With each passing second, the battlefield grew louder and messier; sand churned and stained dark in wide patches while the air thickened with the metallic scent of blood mixed with acrid venom.

Blades sang through the air; bodies thudded against the ground; and amidst this chaos was the constant hiss of melting sand filling gaps between screams. The warriors moved like shadows in a storm, their speed unwavering despite the oppressive heat from five suns beating down upon them. Sweat mingled with blood on their skin, yet none appeared tired or worried.

This was what they lived for, a fight that allowed them to unleash their full potential and demonstrate why they followed a young master who never seemed to lift a finger himself.

They dismantled creatures with brutal efficiency: severing stingers, crushing heads, tearing through armored plates, all while leaving behind an ever-growing field of twisted corpses half-buried in shifting dunes as more monsters continued to emerge from below as if the desert itself refused to run out of things to throw at them.

Amidst this storm of violence stood Isis exactly where he had landed, hands clasped lightly behind his back, eyes fixed on the endless horizon rather than on the slaughter occurring mere meters away.

The heat shimmered around him, causing his figure to waver slightly, yet he maintained a relaxed posture and a soft, almost peaceful expression.

He was captivated by the way the light from the five suns painted the dunes in shifting shades of gold and amber, while distant mirages danced like faint ghosts at the edge of his vision.

He wasn’t ignoring the fight out of arrogance; rather, he found the desert itself far more intriguing. The quiet honesty of its emptiness fascinated him, the way the sand shifted in subtle whispers even without the chaos of battle touching it.

Beside him stood his maid, arms crossed, watching the ongoing fight with a mix of boredom and amusement. Occasionally, she glanced at sprays of blood and tumbling bodies before returning her attention to Isis.

She shook her head slowly, letting out a small sigh as her voice cut through the clamor of clashing metal and dying roars. "Young Master, you really are something else. Most people would be glued to a fight like this, cheering or at least keeping an eye on things just in case something goes wrong but here you are, staring off at the sand as if it’s telling you some secret story. Those creatures are vicious with their armor and venom, all those eyes and yet our men are turning them into pieces faster than I can count. Doesn’t any of it catch your interest even a little?"

Isis didn’t turn his head or shift his gaze from the dunes; his voice remained quiet and steady as always amidst the surrounding madness. "Interest comes and goes, but the desert remains honest. Look at it, the way the suns overlap and scorch everything without mercy, how the sand never stops moving even when nothing touches it."

He paused for a few moments and then continued."There’s no pretending here, no false kindness or hidden rules. Those beasts out there don’t hide what they are; they exist simply to hunt and be hunted. It’s cleaner than most things back home. I find that far more worth watching than a fight whose outcome I already know."

The maid let out a short laugh filled with genuine fondness as she watched one warrior flip over a lunging monster and drive a blade through its back mid-air. "You say that every time! In the necropolis, it was about ’the architecture of the dead,’ and now it’s about ’the purity of sand and venom.’"

She looked Isis and then shook her head with a helpless sigh and continued."Sometimes I worry about you, you seem unfazed no matter how many times we’re thrown into these situations by the Vault. The others are out there having a blast carving up meat like you told them to while you admire this view like we’re on a picnic! Doesn’t this heat bother you? Or all that noise? Or even thinking that one of those stingers could get lucky?"

He gave a slight shrug, his eyes still following the curve of a distant dune that glowed more brightly under one of the suns, as if the light itself was reshaping the world. "The heat is just heat, the noise is just noise, and luck only matters if you leave things to chance. I don’t. The men know what they’re doing, and the desert is behaving like deserts do. Complaining or getting worked up won’t change any of it, so why waste the energy? I’d rather notice how the grains slide over each other when the wind picks up or how the horizon blurs just enough to make you question what’s real. It’s peaceful in its own way. You should try it sometime instead of worrying about me."

She smiled wider despite herself, shifting her stance on the sand as another loud crash echoed from the fight, two beasts colliding under one of the stronger warriors’ might. "Peaceful, he says, while blood is literally raining down twenty paces away. You’re impossible, Young Master, but that’s why we stick around, I guess. Your calm makes us feel like we can handle anything, even after crawling out of a tomb full of undead and landing in places like this. Still, I wish you’d at least look once in a while. The way they move is kind of beautiful in a bloody sort of way, like a dance they’ve practiced forever."

Isis’s faint smile remained as he kept his gaze fixed on the vast expanse ahead. The sounds of battle rose and fell around them without ever pulling his attention away.
