Chapter 307: Meat

The world shifted without warning, as if an unseen hand had turned a page, and what replaced the enclosed stone arena was something completely different, something vast and open and suffocating in its own way, a desert that stretched endlessly in all directions.

Asea of golden sand that shimmered under a blazing sky where not one, not two, but five burning suns hung high above, each one radiating intense heat that pressed down on the land like a crushing weight, their light overlapping and blending into something almost blinding.

Making the air itself ripple and distort as waves of heat rose from the ground, turning the distant horizon into a wavering illusion that made it impossible to tell where the land ended and the sky began, and the sand beneath everything was not still but alive in its own quiet way, shifting slightly with every faint breeze.

Grains sliding over one another in a constant whispering motion, while the occasional gust of wind would sweep across the dunes, lifting fine particles into the air and carrying them along in thin, drifting clouds that glittered faintly under the harsh light.

There was no shade,no cover or any sign of life. Only heat, sand, and the oppressive silence of a place that felt abandoned by everything.

Just then the space in the middle of that endless desert twisted. It began as a small distortion, like heat haze bending too sharply, but within a second it grew, warping and folding in on itself as if reality was being pulled apart.

The air cracking with a faint sound as a jagged tear appeared, glowing faintly along its edges, and from that tear, figures were thrown out, one after another, landing on the sand with varying degrees of control, some sliding a short distance before stopping, others landing cleanly on their feet, and the tear snapped shut just as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind only the group that had been expelled into this harsh environment.

Isis stood at the center. He simply landed lightly on the sand as if stepping onto solid ground, his posture relaxed, his expression unchanged, his eyes half-lidded as he looked around slowly, taking in the vast desert with a calm, almost bored gaze, as if he had been placed in an ordinary field rather than a place that could kill a normal person within hours, while behind him, his group gathered quickly, their movements sharp and controlled despite the sudden shift, each one adjusting to the new environment with practiced ease.

His maid stepped forward slightly, her brows furrowing as she looked around, shielding her eyes briefly from the harsh light of the five suns as she spoke, her voice carrying a hint of dissatisfaction as she said.

"Previously we were thrown into that necropolis filled with those disgusting undead creatures, and after going through all that trouble just to get out, we are now placed in this god forsaken desert, Young Master, this Vault truly has no sense of mercy." Her tone was not one of fear but of annoyance, as if the situation was simply inconvenient rather than dangerous.

Isis turned his head slightly toward her, his expression still calm, his eyes soft in a way that didn’t match the harsh environment around them.

He reached out casually, placing his hand on her head and rubbing it gently as if comforting a child, his voice quiet but steady as he said."Don’t complain, complaining won’t get us out of here."

His words were simple, without any weight behind them, but the way he said it carried a certain ease, as if everything around them was already under control, and the maid pouted slightly at his response, though she didn’t resist the gesture, her expression softening a little despite her earlier complaint.

"Young Master Isis, why are you always so calm..." she said after a moment, her voice quieter now, her eyes looking at him with a mix of curiosity and something deeper, something that bordered on admiration and frustration at the same time.

"Nothing ever seems to peak your interest, no matter what situation we are in."

One of the warriors behind them, a tall man with a scar across his face, let out a short chuckle as he added. "She’s right, Young Master, most people would be sweating or panicking right now, but you look like you’re taking a walk in your garden."

Isis didn’t answer immediately. He simply looked ahead, at the endless sand and the burning sky.

And then he smiled faintly, a small curve of his lips that didn’t reach his eyes as he said, "If I panic, will the desert disappear? If I get excited, will something interesting suddenly appear? Emotions don’t change the outcome, they only change how you experience it, and I prefer to experience things calmly."

His words carried a quiet depth that made the others fall silent for a moment, his maid blinking slightly as she processed what he said, her earlier frustration easing as she nodded slowly.

"I see... as expected of Young Master," she said softly, though there was still a faint pout on her face, and Isis simply gave a small shrug as if the matter wasn’t worth further discussion, his attention already shifting back to the environment around them.

But suddenly the sand moved. At first, it was subtle, a faint tremor beneath their feet.

A slight shift in the surface of the dunes.

But within seconds, it grew stronger, the ground vibrating more noticeably as the sand began to bulge in multiple places around them, forming raised mounds that moved as if something massive was pushing upward from below.

The members of Isis’s group reacted instantly, their relaxed postures disappearing as their eyes sharpened, their bodies tensing as they spread out slightly, forming a loose formation around him without needing any orders.

The sand exploded.

BOOM!

One mound burst open, sending a spray of sand into the air as a massive figure shot out, landing heavily on the ground with a loud thud that shook the surrounding area, and before anyone could fully react, more followed, one after another, bursting out from all directions.

Their emergence violent and sudden as the desert around them turned chaotic, the once calm surface now torn apart by the appearance of these creatures.

There were hundreds of them. And they were monstrous. Each creature stood at least three meters tall at the shoulder, their upper bodies resembling that of a horse but twisted and unnatural, their frames covered in a layer of dark, chitin-like armor that gleamed faintly under the harsh light.

Segmented plates overlapping each other like the shell of an insect, giving them both protection and a rigid, alien appearance, their legs long and powerful but ending not in hooves but in sharp, pointed tips that dug into the sand with ease, allowing them to move with both speed and stability, while their lower bodies extended into something far more terrifying.

A long, segmented tail that curved upward behind them like that of a scorpion, each segment thick and armored, leading to a massive stinger at the end that glowed faintly with a sickly green light, dripping with a viscous liquid that hissed softly when it touched the sand, leaving behind small patches of corroded ground.

Their heads were the most unsettling.

Not fully horse and not fully anything recognizable either.

Their faces elongated, their jaws lined with rows of jagged teeth that didn’t belong to any natural creature, their eyes small but numerous, several of them embedded along the sides of their heads, glowing faintly as they locked onto the group, their breaths coming out in low, hissing sounds that mixed with the dry wind of the desert, creating a chorus of eerie noise that filled the air.

They surrounded them from all sides. The atmosphere changed instantly.

From calm to suffocating and quiet to tense.

Isis yawned, a soft, unbothered sound that seemed completely out of place in the middle of such a scene, his expression unchanged as he looked at the encircling monsters, his eyes half-lidded as if he was looking at something mildly inconvenient rather than a deadly threat, and he lifted one hand lazily, waving it slightly as if brushing away a minor annoyance.

"Take care of them," he said simply, his voice calm and without urgency, "You have two minutes."

The moment those words left his mouth, the atmosphere around his group shifted.

Completely. The relaxed expressions disappeared.

Replaced by something else. Their eyes lit up not with fear but with hunger and excitement.

With a cold, bloodthirsty intent that contrasted sharply with Isis’s calm demeanor, as if they had been waiting for this moment, their bodies leaning forward slightly, their grips tightening on their weapons, their auras rising as a faint pressure spread outward from them, pushing against the incoming tide of monsters.

To them these creatures were not threats.

They were prey, meat on the chopping board.

And the desert, once silent and empty, now stood on the edge of another storm, one that was about to erupt at any moment.
