Chapter 31: Demon Instructor

After saying that, he waved them off as if shooing flies.

"Enough. Training Chamber Three is yours. Go mess around by yourself."

"Do not bother me while I am drinking."

As the elevator doors slowly closed, cutting off the suffocating smell of liquor and killing intent on the fifth underground floor, Alar let out a long breath.

He wiped the thin sweat from his forehead and turned to Joren.

"You actually dared to look him in the eye that long?"

Joren straightened his cuffs, his face unchanged.

"He is that strong?"

Jazz, who had been quiet until now, spoke suddenly. His voice was low, rough as sandpaper.

"That man is a monster."

Jazz pressed the button for the first underground floor, and the elevator began to rise steadily.

"Take my advice. Do not rush that assessment."

Joren raised a brow.

"That hard?"

Alar gave a laugh that sounded more like disbelief.

"That is hell mode."

Ding.

The elevator doors opened.

The three of them stepped out of Building One. Outside, it was already deep night.

Norcrest’s night sky had been dyed a strange purple red by the neon lights. From far away came the occasional wail of police sirens.

Antares Command’s residential area was right behind the branch building. In a place where every inch of land cost a fortune, having this kind of living environment was enough to show the status of Antares Command members.

They walked along a cobblestone path.

Alar seemed to fall into some unbearable memory, the muscles in his face twitching slightly.

"Two years ago, I was full of myself too. Thought I was some genius. The day after I got my equipment, I went straight to Corren for the assessment."

He stopped there and subconsciously touched his ribs.

"And?"

Joren asked.

Jazz gave a cold snort and took over for him.

"Six broken ribs, a crushed fracture in his right leg, and even his face was beaten swollen like a pig’s head. His own mother would not have recognized him. He lay in bed for a full month."

Alar scratched his head awkwardly and did not refute it.

"That old freak said he would use only one hand and suppress his realm to fight me."

"Then on the first move, I went flying."

Alar made an exaggerated gesture with his hands.

"And that was him holding back because I was new. Otherwise, I would have died right there."

Joren nodded thoughtfully.

Alar was late stage Rank One. His Talent might not compare with Joren’s current strength, but he was definitely not weak.

Yet he could not take even one move?

Jazz pointed at his own bear like frame.

"When I took the assessment, I was already a late stage Rank One Awakened Warrior."

"I thought, since I could not beat him, I could at least defend, right?"

"Fourth move. My defense broke."

"I soaked in a medical pod for half a month before I recovered."

The two of them went back and forth, spilling every painful detail of the past.

They had only one goal.

Scare Joren.

Or maybe protect him.

After all, Corren did not only break the body.

He was even better at breaking the will.

Without noticing it, the three had already arrived in front of a building.

"We are here. This is the residential area."

Jazz stopped and pulled an electronic key from his pocket, tossing it to Joren.

"Kaia left this for you specially. It is one of the best units in our area."

Joren caught the key.

"Thanks."

Alar came closer and patted Joren on the shoulder with an earnest look.

"When you break through to peak Rank One, with your Talent, it will not be too late to challenge Corren then."

"Antares Command does not set a deadline for passing the assessment anyway. Even if you drag it out half a year or a year, no one will say anything."

Jazz nodded from the side.

"That is right."

Looking at the concern in their eyes, something stirred slightly in Joren’s chest.

These two looked unreliable most of the time, but they did treat him as a comrade.

Being cared about like this was not bad.

"Do not worry. I know what I am doing."

Joren smiled faintly and did not explain further.

"Good. As long as you know."

"Area C, room 1007. That is yours."

Jazz pointed toward the elevator.

"Alar and I are right next door. Knock anytime something comes up."

After saying goodbye to the two of them, Joren took the elevator upstairs alone.

Card swipe.

Door open.

It was a single apartment of more than one hundred square meters.

A huge panoramic floor to ceiling window occupied an entire wall, giving him the whole night view of Norcrest.

The soft voice of the smart butler sounded the moment he entered.

"Welcome home, Mr. Joren. The indoor temperature has been adjusted to the most comfortable twenty four degrees. Hot water has been prepared in the bathtub."

Joren walked to the window and looked down at the traffic below, tiny as ants.

Just a few days ago, he had been curled up in a shabby low rent room barely over ten square meters, with peeling walls and a ceiling that leaked whenever it rained.

"So this is the world of Awakened Warriors..."

He took off the clothes stained with sweat and dust, then went straight into the bathroom.

The huge bathtub had already been filled with hot water. Special medicinal packs that eased muscle fatigue floated on the surface.

Joren sank his whole body into the water.

Warmth wrapped every inch of his skin, like countless gentle hands smoothing away the soreness in his meridians.

Ten minutes later.

Wrapped in a bathrobe, Joren walked out refreshed.

He took a chilled energy drink from the fridge and dropped onto the bed, soft as a cloud.

Then he raised his left hand and tapped the black tactical watch lightly with his fingertip.

Buzz.

A pale blue holographic screen popped out and floated in the air.

The interface was clean and direct, full of the Dominion Military’s tough style.

Joren opened the [Profile] tab.

[Name: Joren]

[Serial number: J 1047]

[Affiliation: Norcrest Antares Command, Third Special Operations Team]

[Rank: Private, official member]

[Military Merit: 600]

[Authority Level: F]

"Six hundred points?"

Joren’s gaze stopped on the military merit column.

He opened the details.

[Kill record: Rank Three Gale Fiend Wolf]

[Base reward: 500 points]

[Entry benefit: 100 points]

[Note: After data integration, this Voidbeast was confirmed to have been injured by others. The reward shown is the amount after deducting the portion allocated to other contributors.]

The corner of Joren’s mouth lifted slightly.

Kaia had not lied to him. That Gale Fiend Wolf really was valuable.

According to what Kaia had said earlier, one Kinetic Assist Module cost five hundred military merit. Converted into money, that was five million.

These six hundred military merit points were equal to six million.

Rich overnight.
