Chapter 28: Stone

Ethan’s words from before continued to repeat in his head on a loop. Multiple possibilities flashed through his mind, but only one seemed to make sense.

The eldest of the siblings, Jessica, seemed to be suffering from some kind of disorder. To cure it, she needed to visit the Thunder Domain regularly. As for why, Cole was not sure, but he had a feeling he was going to find out soon.

While he was busy thinking, flashes of yellow lightning continued to erupt outward. Some violent bolts directly fell on the ground, blasting wide craters into the earth. The shockwaves generated from the explosions hit Cole, bringing with them the charred smell of burnt earth.

It did not matter that he was at the peak of the Nascent Trainee Realm. If he was hit by such a shockwave, the damage he suffered was going to be devastating. It would be a miracle if he came out of such a situation in one piece.

The lightning bolts continued to rain from the sky from time to time, yet the carriage showed no sign of stopping. From what he could tell, it seemed to be heading directly deeper into the region where the lightning was the most intense.

Cole looked at the chariot, then at the fire-breathing wolves ahead, a slightly solemn look flashing in his eyes.

Would they be able to survive...?

Ethan saw the look on his face and simply smiled.

All this time, it had been Cole shocking him. Now it was time for payback.

Under Cole’s eyes, the two siblings started to move, bringing out multiple exotic ingredients and placing them in a rough formation. The chariot also started to transform, its roof moving to convert into a flat platform with multiple iron rods arranged in a circular pattern.

These rods were made from iron, and iron was a good conductor of electricity.

Thinking of all this, Cole could not help but get up and ask in a loud tone,

"Are you guys out of your mind? Erecting iron rods so tall—do you want us to get killed?"

Ethan ignored Cole’s question and continued doing what he was doing. Then, after placing a glass crystal, he said,

"Don’t worry, valued customer. Just like you, we also value our lives. No one wants to die in this random corner of the world."

"You also value your life? Then why are you digging your own grave...?"

Suddenly, Cole stopped speaking as multiple messages filled his vision.

[Simulation of Rank-One Spell Lightning Web complete one million times. Uploading data to host brain. Please brace for impact.]

He had barely finished reading through this message when suddenly memories of countless years that he had not lived yet flooded his mind. A lone youth trapped in a closed space where everything was created by the A.I. chip, with infinite mana and infinite time, practiced.

At first, the youth’s form was casual. Then by the time it reached one hundred repetitions, the young man opposite had become more refined. By the one-thousandth time, the young man had started showing signs of a budding expert. By the millionth time, the young man seemed to have completely mastered the spell, casting it so flawlessly that it felt like breathing.

As the saying goes, do not fear the man who knows a thousand skills, but fear the man who has practiced one skill a thousand times.

But now Cole had gone beyond that. It was no longer a thousand times, but a million times.

As Cole absorbed the experience, the muscles in his body underwent drastic changes. Billions of new neural forms, synapses, and firing patterns appeared as new connections formed. Cole was not just receiving memories, but the A.I. chip was also adjusting his body to how it would have been after one million simulations.

After another brief amount of time, Cole’s stare returned to normal. When he opened his eyes, countless yards of lightning seemed to flash through them.

For a moment, he forgot about his current situation and muttered to himself in a low voice,

"Amazing... the A.I. chip’s simulation function seems to have performed far beyond what I expected..."

It was then—

Boom!

A lightning bolt thick as an ancient tree fell directly on top of the chariot, hitting it right at the center.

Cole’s heart almost jumped out of his throat. It was only when he did not feel a wave of pain that he opened his eyes and looked around, then realized it was not him that had been hit by the lightning bolt, but someone else.

Thinking up to this point, he looked at the center, where Jessica sat with her legs crossed. Her face was burnt to a crisp. Crimson blood was flowing from her faint skin. However, there was not a single sign of a frown on her face, as if she could not feel pain at all.

However, Cole noticed something else, and his face turned solemn.

What was going on with her? Everything below her waist seemed to have turned into a stone sculpture.

A slightly horrifying sight.

Her current state reminded him of a legend from Earth.

It was then Ethan’s voice brushed past his ear.

"Oh, you are finally awake. I thought your disease was also acting up again."

Ethan came walking, holding a green healing bottle in his hand. Just a moment ago, Cole had completely stopped responding, so Ethan had assumed his disease might be acting up again. But now, seeing him looking fine, the young merchant let out a sigh of relief.

With the treatment finally starting, his elder sister Jessica could not move. If anyone attacked them at this moment, the only one he could rely on was Cole.

While the two were talking, the sky lit up once more, and a lightning bolt fell again, this time directly on top of Jessica’s head.

Ethan unconsciously closed his eyes shut forcefully, unable to imagine the pain that his sister might be going through.

Cole looked at everything and finally could not hold back his curiosity and asked,

"Care to explain what is going on...?"

Ethan hesitated for a moment. Then, after thinking of something, he let out a sigh and said,

"You have already seen a lot, so telling you is not going to hurt. Ever since young, elder sister’s body would slowly turn into stone. At first it was a small occurrence, but as she grew, the illness grew along with her. To stop herself from turning completely into stone, she has no choice but to make use of lightning to stop her flesh from turning into stone..."
