Chapter 143: You Know Where To Take Her?
The military didn’t have a great view of Originals.
During the first dalki war, it was the military who were on the front lines the longest, and it wasn’t until the risk of humanity going extinct became real for them to step in. Even then, it took longer than that before they decided to spread information about how to learn abilities.
That being said, Original families were influential, and many of which held great power, so there were a few that the military worked with. One such family was the Green family as they owned the company that made Power Fighters, a very popular game amongst their bases, and was similarly a big contributor to their software advancements.
"Have they truly invented a way to block MC?" Duke said out loud, rereading the message, "How did they even know that we messed with this ’blind study’ of theirs?"
"It is possible that they put a device on the student to monitor her," Nathan replied, "But it does seem strange that they would get into studying MC."
"These Originals, always doing things without telling us," Duke grumbled.
"If this is true, we may need to have a meeting with the Head Generals," Nathan noted, "A drug like this would change a lot of things."
"Yes, but because the Greens decided not to tell us anything, we might not even get it," Duke shot back, "I need a smoke. This is why I don’t like dealing with Originals."
Nathan pondered the message. A part of him was wondering why it was important for Erin to be freed from the dungeon for the Greens to continue their ’MC blocking’ drug trial, but the other part was concerned as to losing favor with the Greens.
In the end, Nathan sighed with frustration.
’As much as I hate to do so, they did leave me with no choice.’

Not long after Fex was told to go to Logan’s room, he was getting caught up with the situation with Erin, and the entire time, he kept thinking that Erin was great at getting into trouble.
’At least I don’t have to worry about being bored here with Erin around,’ Fex thought.
He glanced at Logan, who was still sitting at the computer, his back to the others. As far as his knowledge went, Logan was someone who wasn’t aware about what vampires were, and only knew that there was something different about Erin’s MC. As a result, there was a concern on his mind that he couldn’t fully explain while listening.
"Hey, Quinn, Layla, mind if we leave real quick? In private."
Logan glanced back behind him, before returning to his computer, "If there is something that you are hiding from me that’ll get in the way of helping Erin, then it’s best if you tell me now."
"It’s nothing like that!" Layla quickly said as she was looking for the next best words to use, "It’s just... Personal."
With his back still turned to the others, Logan squinted, but commanded a few of his spiders to take out a yellow orb from his closet.
"Are you three aware of the silencing orbs in the library? Well, you should be. If you must talk about a secret that must stay hidden from me, then use one of these."
The spiders lifted the orb up for Layla to grab, and she took it in her hands.
"And you won’t try to eavesdrop on us?" Quinn asked.
Logan continued typing, "You are free not to use the orb, but other people live on this floor. I am simply giving you the tools to keep your conversation private."
Before any of them could protest against the idea, Layla’s stomach audibly growled.
"Er, we should go outside."
With that, they left into the hall, and the boys were worried about Layla’s hunger.
"You two wouldn’t happen to have some... meat in your fridge?" Layla asked with a worried smile.
Fex eyed Layla, "Didn’t you eat recently? You shouldn’t be this hungry this soon."

Layla waved her hands, "I was attacked earlier, but I’ll just get food from my fridge later. We have to think about Erin first."
The three all immediately looked down to the orb, unsure if they should trust it.
"Hey, Layla, do you trust him enough for us to talk about this?" Fex asked, "I mean, I don’t really know the guy, so..."
Lifting the orb to her eyes, Layla began inspecting it, but there wasn’t anything immediately obvious about it being tampered with.
"He was willing to help us with Erin, and he helped me out with my watch yesterday without expecting much in return. I don’t think there’s anything malicious about his goals or wants, just that he wants to learn more about the world."
Fex raised an eyebrow, "And you know this because...?"
Layla tapped the top of the silencing orb, and the trio were suddenly unable to hear the environment around them, except for each other.
"It’s just a gut feeling," Layla said finally.
Either way, there were things they needed to discuss. With Erin only having approximately a month at the school to explain having a new ability, they were going to need a long term plan.
"Fex, you know about vampire abilities right?" Layla began, "I don’t have an ability yet, but is there an ability— any ability, that I could learn to replicate the ice ability? I don’t care how obscure it is. If I can do that, then maybe we could fake it. Convince them that Erin’s ability came back."
Fex paused, placing a hand on his chin as he was running through the options, "Well, the closest I can think of is substance mimicry, but—"
"Great! Teach me it," Layla quickly spoke.
"Wait hold on," Fex waved his hands, "First of all, we don’t have any ability books for it, and even if we did, all it would be able to do is turn you into a specific material. It wouldn’t look very convincing to only have you turn into ice."
Layla’s face dropped, but still trying to be hopeful.
"Maybe we could pretend she froze me in public, or..."
"I hate to say it, Layla, but I’m not sure if that’s going to work," Quinn carefully said.
For some reason, hearing Quinn say that brought some sort of anger within her.

"And we just let her get taken away by the military?" Layla barked as she stomped her foot
The two boys stared at Layla, shocked by the sudden outburst. Their reaction made Layla acutely aware of her own behavior, and she took a step back, holding her arm in shame.
"Er, sorry about that, I don’t know what’s gotten into me..." Layla whispered, "If nothing else, she could still go to the Green family but..."
They all stood there, not liking that conclusion either. After going through everything that they had done, having Erin go away to an Original family meant that they likely wouldn’t see her again for a long time.
"What about your influence skill? Couldn’t you try using it on the military officials?" Quinn wondered.
Fex shook his head, "No, their minds are way too resilient for that, and as strong as my naturally good looks are, trying to influence a bunch of people individually is too risky."
"And there’s apparently recorded evidence too," Layla added, "They would find out something’s off quickly."
Layla’s stomach grumbled again, and they knew that they would either come up with a solution now, or talk about this after she got a meal.
"I’ll get you another piece of human meat tomorrow," Fex told Layla.
She tiredly smiled, "Thanks. I’ll try to survive until then."
Then, an idea popped in Fex’s head.
"There is one place she could go, in fact, both Erin and you" Fex started, referring to Layla, "This is something you’d likely need to deal with anyways, but I could take you two to the vampire settlement."
