Chapter 144: Simple Plan

The vampire settlement was a first for Layla to hear about, but Quinn knew vaguely that there was likely a place where vampires lived away from humans.

"I don’t think I can go with her," Layla said, "I have family I need to get back to at the end of the school year who don’t know about my condition. I can’t say for certain if that’s the case with Erin, but it could be true for her as well."

"Well, I understand that, but try explaining it to the vampire leaders. It’s a strict place with all of these laws. Its one of the reasons why I ran away," Fex stated with frustration evident in his tone.

Layla squinted her eyes, noticing the choice words used, "Why did you run away? Did you tell anyone?"

Suddenly, Fex felt a little uncomfortable, "Well, I told a servant of mine—"

"That explains your gold card," Layla deduced.

"What are you trying to do?" Fex shot back.

In her mind, Layla was thinking that if he had a gold colored card, and had a servant he talked to, then he must’ve been someone who was important in the vampire settlement. However, if he also ran away without telling anyone, then there was a chance that someone might be looking for him.

"Hey, let’s put this on pause until tomorrow," Quinn got between them, "Layla needs to eat, and we need to check up on Erin and Logan."

To ensure that Layla wouldn’t eat anyone on the way back, Quinn decided that it was best she went with Fex, and that he would stay here with Logan. They agreed, and went off. However, Quinn wanted to be alone for another reason.

’System, how’s Erin doing?’ Quinn asked, waiting for an answer.

He wasn’t sure if he should message her directly as there was a chance she was in a situation that needed her full attention.

"She’s still in a holding cell," The system replied.

’Good. If they release her, they may ask her questions about the drug, and she’s not going to know what they’re talking about.’

"Oh I see," The system sounded amused, "Using the system in this way is quite clever. To think it was almost not implemented!"

After being in the holding cell for a while, Erin couldn’t figure out a way to escape from the place normally.

’What do I do?’ She worried to herself.

The system decided to answer her question, "Don’t worry, Quinn managed to figure something out."

{Quinn} Logan has told the military that you are part of a blind study to understand the effects of a "MC blocking" drug that his family is testing.

{Quinn} If they ask you anything, then pretend that’s the case.

Just then, the hooded man teleported in, and she was teleported out and into the interrogation room.

There, Nathan and Duke were standing in the back, except Duke who was more further away than Nathan.

With more reassurance that there was a way for her to get out of this situation, Erin sat in the chair, and held her hand out to the truth detecting lady.

[Users mental strength and charm is strong enough to block the ability]

[Would you like to block the ability?]

Instantly, she selected yes, and the lady began asking her questions.

"Do you know why you’re here?" The lady began.

"No, I’m not 100% sure why," Erin replied.

"You’re suspected of not having an ability at the moment," The lady questioned, "Do you know when this started happening?"

Recalling what Quinn had told her, Erin spun a lie, "I don’t know why, but ever since I took those pills, my ability stopped working."

"Do you know why you took these ’pills’?"

Keeping up a straight face, Erin continued, a hint of frustration in her tone, "I don’t know! I was just told to take them in exchange for a lot of credits, and suddenly my ability stopped working."

The frustration wasn’t from the story they were believing was told, but from being constantly questioned. Still, it added to making her seem more truthful.

"And why didn’t you tell anyone?"

"You try telling people why your ability stopped working!" Erin shouted.

Nathan nodded, listening in, "And can you get into contact with the person who gave you these drugs?"

Erin shook her head, "No, they never gave me a number."

"So they didn’t tell you if they would reach out periodically?"

Erin paused, unsure how to answer.

"Just say no," The system advised.

"Are you guys going to keep asking the same question?" Erin shot back, "I don’t know. I was told to take these drugs in exchange for credits, I took them, and I can’t use my ability anymore. Is that enough answering for you?!"

"... I guess that works," The system said.

Nathan nodded, having figured out the situation more.

’The Green family said it was a blind survey, so she probably didn’t know the full extent as to what the drug did to her. It was only because of our actions that she likely figured it out,’ Nathan thought, ’I have seen her records, and it stated she didn’t have any strong political backing, so that may explain why the Greens would choose to experiment with her.’

"If that’s everything, then can I be let go?" Erin spat out, turning to the generals.

"She may be let free," Nathan replied, gesturing to the hooded man.

Erin was teleported out, allowing for Nathan and Duke to discuss the matter privately.

"Her story does align with what the Green family told us," Nathan said.

"I’m still not buying it," Duke barked, "I know there’s more to this."

Nathan rolled his eyes, "Feel free to continue looking into this matter, but I’m not going to mess with the Green family."

Duke grumbled, but then he remembered something. A few days ago when they got the report that a dalki attacked Caladi, Duke looked into it, and saw that somehow, a group consisting of a level 1, two level 2s, a level 3, and a level 5, being Erin, had survive long enough against a dalki as to not have any causalities.

It could’ve been explained that Erin, as a level 5, was able to defend the others, but if she supposedly didn’t have an ability this entire time, then how did they all survive?

’I’m going to get to the bottom of this,’ Duke thought, ’I’ll convince Nathan that we need to keep a close eye on Erin.’
