Chapter 139: Endure The Pain

Even though the system was somehow able to block the lady’s truth detecting ability, Erin didn’t feel fully comfortable just yet. She selected "Yes" and the lady began to ask her questions, a strange sense of calm as her hand was on Erin’s.

"Are you a student at military base 2?" She asked.

"Yes," Erin replied.

The lady nodded, indicating she could tell Erin was being truthful. Even though this was something that they all knew should be true, it was likely a warm up question to ensure that there weren’t any false positives.

"Do you know why you are here?"

"No."

Then came the big question.

"Are you an agent of Pure?"

"No."

Even though the system said that it would be able to block the truth detecting ability, there was a doubt that it might’ve not gone through. All of Erin’s charm skills had a basis of luck, something not guaranteed, and blocking her ability could very well be the same thing.

After a very tense moment, the lady spoke up.

"She’s telling the truth," The lady told the men behind her, and let go of Erin’s hands.

Duke’s face contorted into rage, and slammed his fists on the wall, "How could this be?! Are you sure Pure hasn’t used some sort of technique to bypass truth detecting abilities?"

"We got our answer, didn’t we?" Nathan commented, "We cannot force her to continue the interrogation."

"No, there is more to it than this," Duke retorted, then turned to Erin, "I have several witnesses all telling me that she hasn’t used her ability since the beginning week, despite several situations where it would’ve been beneficial."

"Excuse me? What students do with their abilities is their business. So long as they don’t kill anyone that is," Nathan shot back, "It could be as simple as her testing herself, or a personal challenge!"

"If it’s so simple, then why doesn’t she use her ability now?" Duke slowly spoke with a stare that seemed to bore through Erin’s soul.

"...This may spell trouble," The system spoke.

’Definitely,’ Erin remarked.

Layla bit her tongue, doing everything in her power not to rip and tear into Mono.

’If only he knew how much I wanted to eat him, he wouldn’t be nearly this smug,’ Layla bitterly thought.

"Why are you here? Just to talk my ear off?" Layla tried putting on a brave face.

"No, no," Mono smugly smirked, teeth peeking between his lips, "I was just here to help the investigation along, that’s all."

Layla took a step back, clenching her fists tightly. Her breathing intensified, and she tried to calm herself down.

’He’s just a distraction, Layla, you have to pull yourself together.’

Despite this, she was finding it hard not to partially bare her teeth. A growl started rising at the back of her throat.

Then, with a darkness in his eyes, Mono began his taunt, "And why should you care? The lives of level 5s and level 2s are worlds apart, you two shouldn’t even be friends. If anything, you should be glad she’s gone."

The growl escaped her mouth, and Layla lunged at him, hands outstretched to tear flesh open, but he narrowly jumped out of the way.

Mono smirked, "Oh? Are you—"

"Shut up!" Layla screamed, stomping her foot, "She saved my life! You know nothing about her!"

She leapt wildly again, and Mono barely side stepped once more. Even though he avoided the full brunt of the attack, he felt a small trickle of blood fall down his cheek.

’Damn it!’ Mono mentally cursed, touching his injury in disbelief, ’Is her beast weapon making her faster now? Well no matter, she’s still a first year.’

Clouds slowly covered the sky, dimming the light of the sun. At the same time, Mono opened up his hand as glowing energy in the shape of a whip formed within it.

Letting go of the whip, Mono let loose his soul weapon like he was dropping a live snake into the battlefield.

"If you won’t see reason, then you leave me with no choice."

Immediately, Layla jumped back, and she forced herself to cool her mind. This was a situation that needed her attention, not blind rage.

Taking out her bow, she rapid fired a few arrows at Mono, but the whip between them snapped onto them, nearly instantly destroying them. On the other side, the second year smiled widely.

"Crap, this is bad," Layla whispered.

She only had so many arrows on hand, especially after using most of them in the fight before. At the same time, Layla was reminding herself that she needed to get help for Erin’s sake.

Turning around, Layla ran from the fight, but before she could get far, Mono’s soul weapon lashed towards her. It wrapped around her leg, causing her to fall.

She winced in pain. The soul weapon had cut into her skin deeply, flailing wildly, but while it was busy with her leg, she drew another arrow and shot it towards Mono.

The second year watched the arrow whizz pass him, not needing to do anything.

"This is useless, you’re just wasting time—!" Mono began shouting before he saw another arrow fly towards him in his future sight.

He sidestepped it, initially thinking he was safe, but then it curved in the air, and embedded into his arm.

’Did she use her telekinesis on this arrow?’ Mono guessed, clenching his injury in pain, ’She’s a level 2, it shouldn’t be that fast, but I must’ve misjudged.’

Layla scrambled to get off the ground, and tried to remove the soul whip, but it lashed against her hands. Gritting her teeth, Layla decided to ignore the whip, and continued to fire more and more arrows at Mono, using the last of them up. It was a gamble, but it was the only thing she could do.

The whip immediately launched off of Layla, and attacked all of the arrows midair. None of them hit Mono, but that wasn’t the plan, she was now free, and got back up onto her feet.

Once it landed, the whip launched itself onto her bow, trying to rip it out of her hands. She thought about letting go, but then it slithered up her arms.

’I could escape if I cut my arms off, but he’s watching!’ Layla contemplated, trying to break free, ’But if I don’t then something awful might happen to Erin.’

Still, Layla ran, ignoring the pain and sprinting towards the academy building. So long as it didn’t wrap around her legs, she could still move.

As she was about to go through the entrance, she skidded to a halt as Mono stood between her and the building.

"Leaving so soon? Didn’t you want to finish what you started?" Mono taunted with a smug look.

Layla frantically scrambled to remove the soul whip entangling her. She needed to get access to her weapon again, but all it did was slice into her more.

’No no no no! Come on, get off of me!’ She screamed in her mind.

Knowing he had basically won, Mono slowly stepped forward, and the whip continued to lash around Layla’s arms.

Layla paused, bracing herself to commit to an intense action.

’I might just have to do it, he’s left me no choice but to cut off my arms to escape.’

Just then, Mono’s eyes widened, and he jumped out of the way of a stone spike thrusting upwards where he once stood.

Similarly, Layla was too busy to even smell a new person had entered the fight. As she turned around to find the source of the spike, she saw a friendly face had come to help.

"I already know what’s going on, Layla, I can hold him off!" Quinn yelled.
