Chapter 32: Battle Begins
Quickly, hundreds of beasts climbed the wall, and the bloodline awakeners quickly intercepted them on the walls before they could reach the top.
Max also attacked; the one climbing towards him was a lizard-type beast they were quick to climb. He thrusted his spear with speed and power, and in a single attack pierced its skull.
Crack!
And then the lizard beast fell to the ground, taking some beasts who were climbing behind it.
Bang!
But this didn’t stop the beasts, as they had lost their minds; all they wanted was just to destroy and nothing else.
The battle continued, and everyone defended with their might. The situation was still under control, and no beast even managed to slip through the bloodline awakeners. But this was just the beginning, as they seemed unable to see the end of the beast tide.
The entire land in front of them seemed filled with beasts, with more than hundreds of thousands of beasts coming towards them.
One after another, more and more beasts collided with walls and climbed up. The number slowly started to increase, and the pressure on the bloodline awakeners rose with every second.
Max remained calm as his spear mastery seemed to have improved after repeated battles. Although he was still a novice, he could be said to be a better novice than before. He had personally experienced battles of life and death, and he knew it was also the best teacher.
He tried to control his strength perfectly and use minimal movement to bring out all his strength. He had gradually realised that every thrust required a stable foundation.
His feet had to remain firmly planted on the ground. Only then could he fully transfer his strength into the spear.
These seemingly minor adjustments greatly improved his spearsmanship. With every movement, he was slowly improving as his body was instinctively finding the best course of action for him.
Though slowly, he was improving.
More than fifteen minutes passed, and the situation started to become more dangerous. Finally, some bloodline awakeners could not stop every beast, and they slipped through and climbed to the top of the walls.
The battle immediately spread to the Blood Seed Warriors, ordinary soldiers, and mercenaries waiting behind them.
Max was still quite at ease even when he had to stop three or four beasts at a time on the walls.
But not everyone was like him, especially those rogue bloodline awakeners and mercenaries. They not only had received proper training, but their bloodline level was also quite low, as they had mostly awakened only E-level bloodlines.
In fact, their strength would be just a little bit better than the elite Blood Seed guards from a noble family. And now these low-level rogue bloodline awakeners were feeling the pressure.
Andrew and Mathew can be considered among the stronger ones of the mercenaries, which is why they were able to face bloodline awakeners from the Blackthorn family and the reason Mr Corvus arranged them for Max.
They cannot, like Max, pierce these beast skulls in a single strike, as their physical strength or speed is nowhere near Max’s. They might be experienced, but there is a limit experience can make up for.
The various noble families and the city commanders remained calm. Everything unfolding before them had already been anticipated.
Under the commander’s orders, additional support was immediately dispatched to the sections under the greatest pressure.
Elite Blood Seed Warriors quickly reinforced those areas.
They also kept an eye on the promising ones among the rogue bloodline awakeners. Although most noble families looked down on them, a useful hunting dog was still worth investing in.
The noble families’ situation was completely different from the rogue bloodline awakeners. Most of those who were here were elites and were able to handle things easily.
But this was just beginning, as the longer the beast tide continued, the more dangerous the situation became for them. The beast tide could last days, and at that time their strength and will would determine the fate of the city.
The battle continued as the situation continued to worsen, as different kinds of beasts started to come out from the beast tide. They were different, as they weren’t entirely mindless but were cunning.
Some were able to breathe fire, while some were agile, like a monkey that quickly climbed the wall and attacked. There were some that, within the chaos, could hide their presence and attack unnoticed.
These beasts started to create trouble for the bloodline awakeners, and ordinary soldiers started to lose their lives.
The death toll slowly started to increase, and it was just the beginning.
An hour passed. Everyone gradually began to tire. No section of the battlefield remained completely safe.
Even Max’s position wasn’t exempt. Although he continued killing beasts with remarkable efficiency, he couldn’t stop every single one. Many still slipped past him.
Fortunately, he had performed well enough that the pressure behind his position remained significantly lower than in most other areas of the wall.
Andrew and Mathew, two brothers, were also doing their best. And their strength wasn’t weak; at least when it came to direct confrontation, they truly were the famed sword and spear brothers.
The weaker bloodline awakeners already started to get injured, but thankfully the Flameheart family supported them and even provided a lowest-grade healing potion.
A lowest-grade healing potion costs around ten to fifteen silver coins or sometimes even more. And for most rogue bloodline awakeners, they were a life-saving item, as even if you have money, it isn’t easy to obtain, as they are in very high demand.
From everything Max had witnessed so far... The Flameheart Family wasn’t among the worst noble families.
At the very least, they showed genuine respect toward those fighting for the city. Unlike many other noble houses, they still possessed a true sense of responsibility toward their people.
