Chapter 192: Chapter 195: Courting Death
"BEEP... BEEP... BEEP..."
After the call disconnected, an empty dial tone was all that echoed in Cecilia Quincy’s ears.
The room was eerily silent, as if the furious roaring and cursing from moments ago had just been a figment of her imagination.
"THUMP..."
The burner phone slipped from her palm, landing softly on the duvet. Cecilia Quincy stared blankly, two streams of hot tears silently rolling down her cheeks.
’Cecilia Quincy, you bitch, you should just go die...’
’Homewrecker, slut! I hope you spend the rest of your life riddled with STDs...’
’Cecilia Quincy, get out of Aethelburg...’
’Cecilia Quincy, you’d better not let me see you in Aethelburg, or I’ll definitely throw rotten eggs at your face...’
Countless insults rained down on Cecilia Quincy. She shook her head violently, trying in vain to shake the voices out of her mind.
But it was useless!
The curses were like a spell, constantly haunting her, swirling in her mind. She couldn’t get rid of them!
"...Get out!" She raised her hands and clutched her head, the emotions she’d kept bottled up for days finally erupting.
"All of you, get out! Get the hell away from me!"
"I’m not a homewrecker, and I’m not a slut! I’m not leaving Aethelburg!"
"Get out! All of you, get out!! I don’t want to hear your voices!"
"AHHH!! AHHHHHH!!!"
Cecilia Quincy’s desperate screams echoed throughout the entire villa. Downstairs, Fiona Dalton was startled and rushed upstairs so fast she didn’t even have time to put on her slippers.
"Cecilia!"
The bedroom door was thrown open, and Fiona Dalton stumbled inside.
"Get out!!" Cecilia Quincy clutched her head, still screaming and roaring.
"All of you, get out! Get out!"
"AHHH!! I’m not a homewrecker, I’m not!!"
"Cecilia!" Fiona Dalton ran to Cecilia Quincy’s side and pulled her forcefully into her arms.
"Cecilia, it’s okay, it’s okay..." She placed one hand on the back of Cecilia’s head and patted her back with the other, continually soothing her with both her actions and words.
"There, there, Cecilia. You’re not a homewrecker, and you’re not a bad person. You’re Mommy’s daughter, the apple of the Quincy Family’s eye!"
"WAAAH!" Cecilia Quincy’s roars turned into wails, her small body trembling nonstop in Fiona Dalton’s arms.
Fiona Dalton’s nose stung, and heavy tears welled up in her eyes.
"There, there, Cecilia. Don’t listen to those lunatics and their nonsense. Our Cecilia is kind and sweet; you’re not a homewrecker at all."
"I’m not!!" Cecilia Quincy shrieked at the top of her lungs. "I’m not a homewrecker, I’m not! Ethan Lockwood loves me! Ethan Lockwood only loves me! As long as he loves me, I’m not a homewrecker!"
"No, no, of course Cecilia isn’t." Fiona Dalton coaxed her patiently, agreeing with whatever Cecilia Quincy said.
Cecilia Quincy buried her face in her mother’s embrace and sobbed wretchedly, crying until her voice was hoarse, yet she wouldn’t stop.
...
「An hour later.」
"CLICK..."
Fiona Dalton gently closed the door and tiptoed out.
"What is it now?" Finn Quincy stood in the hallway, frowning impatiently at Fiona Dalton.
"Shhh..." Fiona Dalton raised her index finger to her lips, signaling for Finn Quincy to be quiet.
Finn Quincy shot her a glare and turned to walk toward the top of the stairs.
Fiona Dalton followed him, her face filled with distress. "What else could it be? Those bored netizens with nothing better to do called to curse Cecilia out again..."
"I just don’t get it. What does this have to do with them? They’re all acting like madmen, refusing to let go of Cecilia. They’ve been harassing her for days!"
"..." Finn Quincy didn’t seem to want to discuss the topic. He just said in a low voice, "If you have a clear conscience, you have nothing to fear. If Cecilia was truly innocent, why would those people keep hounding her like this?"
"B-But our Cecilia didn’t do anything wrong!" Fiona Dalton argued, puffing out her chest, though her voice lacked conviction. "Everything Sonia Quincy accused her of in that livestream was fake! She’s just jealous of how outstanding our Cecilia is, so she made up all these lies to frame her!"
"Heh..." Finn Quincy laughed. "Frame her? Set her up? Fiona Dalton, stop playing dumb with me. The evidence Sonia Quincy posted is solid and substantial. There’s no way you can’t see who’s lying!"
"..."
At this point, there was no longer any need for Fiona Dalton to keep up the act.
"...Of course I can see it." She lifted her eyes listlessly, looking at Finn Quincy with a ghost of a smile. "But so what if I can? Cecilia is our daughter, our own flesh and blood. Who am I supposed to comfort if not her? Sonia Quincy?"
"You—" Finn Quincy raised a hand, pointing at Fiona Dalton with anger and resentment. "You’re being utterly foolish!"
Fiona Dalton’s eyes went wide as she glared back at him, her face a mask of defiance.
Finn Quincy: "Cecilia is spoiled rotten because of you! You coddled her, doted on her, and enabled her to make all these mistakes! Now she’s reaping what she sowed, and you’re still lying to her and deceiving her. Do you think you’re loving her? You’re destroying her!"
"Destroying her? Hmph." Fiona Dalton rolled her eyes and sneered. "Finn Quincy, do you think I want to do this?"
"Things have escalated to this point, and all of Aethelburg is waiting to see the Quincy Family become a laughingstock! If I don’t comfort Cecilia, if I don’t placate her, what else can I do? Just push her out and let everyone mock and abuse her?"
"Finn Quincy, Cecilia is a daughter of the Quincy Family! The more pathetic and wretched she looks, the more people will look down on our family! For the Quincy Family’s reputation, for Quincy Enterprises, I have to prop Cecilia up no matter what!"
"You’ll prop her up?" Finn Quincy found it laughable. "Sonia Quincy’s evidence is flying all over the internet. How could you possibly prop Cecilia up?"
Fiona Dalton: "If there’s no way, I’ll find a way! In any case, I will never let Cecilia lose, and I will never let the Quincy Family lose!"
"At this point, it’s impossible for Sonia Quincy to ever return to the Quincy Family. Cecilia is the only daughter of this family, and I will absolutely not let her fall before Sonia Quincy!"
"...I think you’re just asking for trouble!" Finn Quincy cursed angrily, then turned and walked away.
"Asking for trouble?" Fiona Dalton didn’t like hearing that and immediately chased after him in a huff. "Finn Quincy, what right do you have to say I’m asking for trouble?"
Finn Quincy: "Because you’ve spoiled all our children! You spoiled Willow until she developed a weird temper, and you spoiled Cecilia until she lost all sense of proportion! The state both of them are in today is all thanks to you!"
"And the only one who turned out somewhat normal was driven out by you in a fit of madness! Not only do you refuse to reflect on your actions, but you’re determined to keep making the same mistakes. If that’s not asking for trouble, what is?"
"I... You’re saying this is all thanks to me?!" Fiona Dalton nearly exploded with rage at Finn Quincy’s words.
"Finn Quincy, what right do you have to criticize me? All you do is run off to the company all day. How many times have you ever disciplined the children? You’ve never even been to one of their parent-teacher conferences!"
"You, Quincy, are the last person on earth who has the right to blame me!"
