Chapter 188: Chapter 191: Crying and Self-Criticizing

"...Huh?"

Those two words were a first coming from Felix Preston. Sonia Quincy’s eyes widened slightly, finding the pairing of him and an "apology letter" to be both strange and unbelievable.

"Wh-what kind of letter?"

Felix Preston kept his eyes downcast, the hand holding the apology letter trembling for some reason.

"An apology letter," he repeated in a low voice. "The one I wrote."

"...Why would you write an apology letter?" Sonia didn’t understand, and she felt a little urge to laugh.

Felix adjusted his glasses, then cautiously raised his eyes to look at her. "Because I did something wrong."

"Like what?" Sonia asked, curious.

Felix: "There’s... quite a bit. How about you let me read the letter to you?"

"...Alright." Sonia grabbed a pillow and propped it behind her back, trying to sit up as straight as she could. "Go on, I’m listening."

"AHEM..." Felix straightened his back and cleared his throat. Once he was sure his voice was steady, he began to read in a stiff, formal manner.

"Sonia, I’m sorry. I was wrong."

The moment the first sentence left his lips, the corners of Sonia’s mouth began to curl upward uncontrollably.

The situation was supposed to be serious, but for some reason, Sonia just wanted to laugh. The more she listened, the more she wanted to laugh.

But to save Felix’s pride, she forced herself to hold it in, no matter how much she wanted to laugh.

Felix was engrossed in reading his letter, and as he read, his voice started to choke up.

"Sonia, before we got married, I’d never been in a relationship. I have no experience with love, and I didn’t know how to handle the conflicts that arise in a relationship. Back then, when I saw that you wouldn’t open up to me no matter what, I just felt angry. Really angry. But I couldn’t bear to get angry at you, so I could only bottle it all up, trying my best not to talk, not to make a mistake."

"But I never expected that giving you the cold shoulder would be the biggest mistake of all. I wasn’t trying to do it on purpose; I was just afraid I’d say something awful and hurt you in a moment of irrationality."

"Sonia, I’m nowhere near as composed as I seem. Especially after falling in love with you. What little composure I had vanished into thin air, just like that. I’ve tried to find it many times, but it’s gone."

"When it comes to anything related to you, I find it harder and harder to stay calm."

"Mm..." Sonia nodded, struggling to suppress her laughter.

Poor Felix was completely oblivious. He’d even read himself to tears.

"Sonia, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know when you were wronged, and I didn’t know when you were in trouble. You went through all that effort to gather evidence for today’s clarification livestream all by yourself, but I was still acting like an idiot, throwing a tantrum at you."

"Y-You were hinting that you wanted me to go with you before you left this morning. But because of my own stupid temper, I refused. You went to Mina Jennings’s studio for the livestream by yourself, faced Cecilia Quincy by yourself, and endured the agony of childbirth by yourself."

"Giving birth is so painful. I heard your screams from outside the delivery room. Sonia, I’m still scared even now. I was scared I wouldn’t see you come out, scared that something would happen to you... scared I would never see you again..."

"I feel like... I feel like I was a hair’s breadth away from losing you!"

Thick tears blurred his vision, making it impossible for Felix to see what was written on the apology letter. Even though he was in the middle of his apology, the words he spoke now had nothing to do with what he’d written.

"Sonia, I was so wrong, so terribly wrong..." He cried as he spoke, like a little kid who’d had his lollipop stolen, looking pathetic and pitiful.

Sonia’s heart actually ached for him, but his disheveled, sloppy, pitiful state was just too amusing. She really couldn’t help but laugh.

"PFFT..." She had just raised a hand to cover her mouth, but an unrestrained laugh escaped through her fingers.

And once it started, there was no stopping it.

"HAHAHA!"

"HAHAHAHAHA!"

She laughed so hard her eyes curved into crescents, her whole body trembling visibly with each laugh.

Felix put down the apology letter and looked at her with a wronged expression. The more she laughed, the more he wanted to cry.

"SOB SOB SOB..."

Muffled sobs slipped past Felix’s tightly shut mouth. He tried to stop but couldn’t, so he helplessly took off his glasses and covered his eyes with his hand.

"HAHAHAHAHA!"

Sonia’s laughter instantly grew louder.

"SOB SOB SOB SOB..."

And Felix’s crying grew louder, too.

"What are you crying for?" Sonia managed to rein in her laughter, looking at Felix with her bright, watery eyes. "Stop crying. Come here."

Felix shook his head, but he got up from his chair, still crying, and sat down next to Sonia. Then he lunged forward, forcibly stuffing his large frame into her arms.

Sonia wrapped her arms around him, patting his back gently as she coaxed, "Alright, alright, don’t cry. This wasn’t entirely your fault, you know. If I hadn’t insisted on hiding it from you, you wouldn’t have been angry with me."

"No, that’s not it..." Felix buried his face in the crook of Sonia’s neck, letting his torrential tears soak her skin. "It’s all my fault, all my fault... Sonia, I’ll never throw a fit like that again."

"Okay." Sonia agreed to whatever he said. "I believe you. Will you stop crying now, please?"

"SOB SOB SOB..." Felix only cried harder.

Sonia could feel his fear. Seeing that he couldn’t stop crying, she didn’t try to persuade him anymore.

She just held him, indulging him as he cried his heart out like a child.

Until he had cried his fill and stopped on his own.

"Sonia." He cupped her face with both hands, first pressing a few hard kisses to her lips before looking into her eyes and making a promise.

"Something like this will absolutely never happen a second time."

"Okay," Sonia answered softly. "I believe you, and I forgive you. Now stop crying. You look so pitiful when you cry."

Felix pressed his lips together and nodded obediently. "Mm, I’ll stop. I look pretty ugly when I cry."

"You’re not ugly," Sonia said, caressing his face. "Felix Preston is handsome no matter what."

"Sonia..." Her praise made his heart ache. He couldn’t help but pull her tightly into his arms, unconsciously nuzzling her ear with his cheek.

Sonia gently snuggled against him and whispered in his ear, "Now that you’re done reading your apology, isn’t it time for you to ask me your questions?"

Felix: "I’m not going to. Because while I was waiting for you outside the delivery room, Renee Sinclair and your other friends explained everything to me. I know the difficulties you were facing, and I understand that you hid things from me to spare my feelings."

"Thank you, Sonia. But... I still hope that if something like this ever happens again, you’ll tell me right away. I really, truly want to face it together with you."

"Okay," Sonia agreed immediately, then said:

"Felix Preston, since we’ve resolved our issues, don’t you think it’s time you took a look at your son? You haven’t had a single proper look at him since he was born."
