Chapter 187: Chapter 190: Felix Preston’s Apology Letter
"They’re here," Mason Shaw said with a nod, then helped the elderly couple forward.
Seeing this, Mina Jennings and Julia Dawson instinctively took a couple of steps back to make room.
"Oh, dear..." Brianna Bell leaned her hands on the bed rail, her back stooped as she looked at Sonia Quincy. "You’ve been through so much. You really have."
"Thank you for your concern," Sonia Quincy replied politely.
"Dear child, are you still in pain?" Jackson Shaw wanted to reach out and pat Sonia Quincy’s head, but, fearing she might find it too forward, he anxiously clutched the hem of his shirt instead.
Sonia Quincy shook her head. "Thank you for your concern, sir. I’m not in pain anymore."
"Good..." Jackson Shaw forced a smile, but as he did, he couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
He raised a hand, flustered, and wiped the tears from his face. His voice was trembling and hoarse. "That’s good... As long as it doesn’t hurt, that’s all that matters."
"Sir..." Sonia Quincy thought his reaction was a little over-the-top, but it didn’t seem like an act at all, leaving her momentarily bewildered.
Hannah Sutton remembered the plan they had all just agreed on. Fearing the elderly couple would lose their composure and blurt everything out, upsetting Sonia, she quickly stepped forward to help the man stand up straight.
"Sonia must be tired. We should get her back to her room to rest."
"Yes, she needs to rest." Brianna Bell wiped the tears from her face and quickly chimed in. "Giving birth takes a huge toll on the body. She absolutely has to get some good rest."
"Shall we head back to your room, then?" the doctor pushing the gurney asked, seeking Sonia’s consent.
Sonia Quincy: "Let’s go back. I really just want to sleep."
The doctor: "Okay, we’ll head back to the room right now."
Felix Preston grabbed the side rail of the gurney, instinctively starting to walk with them, but Sonia stopped him after only two steps.
"You. Go find a doctor and get that foot looked at. Now." Sonia Quincy frowned and glared at him, her expression fierce.
Felix Preston blinked, a flicker of guilt in his eyes. He forced himself to lie, "Sonia, I’m fine. I want to be with you."
Sonia Quincy: "...Try again."
"..." Felix Preston took off his glasses. He lowered his head, wiping the lenses on the hem of his shirt. "It’s just a little swollen, that’s all. It’s nothing serious. I want to see you back to your room first, and then I’ll find a doctor."
Sonia Quincy: "..."
She knew how stubborn Felix was and didn’t want to waste time arguing. She simply pointed a finger at Jasper Linden. "You. Drag him to a doctor."
Jasper Linden immediately grabbed Felix Preston’s arm. "You got it."
Sonia Quincy closed her eyes. "Doctor, let’s go."
The doctor couldn’t help but chuckle. "Alright."
...
Sonia Quincy had been lucky. Even though she went into labor before her due date, she delivered the baby in just over half an hour. It wasn’t nearly the ordeal she had imagined.
Back in her room, all she wanted to do was close her eyes and sleep, but the doctor wouldn’t let her.
With help from Mrs. Preston and Brianna Bell, she changed into a fresh set of clothes and was then coaxed out of bed to walk around.
The private room was spacious. While Mina Jennings and the others cooed over the baby on one side, Sonia paced back and forth on the other. Even with seven adults, the room didn’t feel the least bit crowded.
"Aww, look at you, little Yoya is so well-behaved..."
Mason Shaw plucked the baby from Jackson Shaw’s arms, claiming he wanted to get some practice holding a baby so he wouldn’t be so awkward with his own kids one day.
"Oh, give me a break." Hannah Sutton, who was setting up the stroller, secretly rolled her eyes at Mason. "He doesn’t want to get ’practice.’ He’s just holding his own little nephew."
Julia Dawson, standing beside her, whispered, "What’s wrong with holding his nephew? It’s a good way for them to bond."
"Hmph..." Hannah pouted. "If he’s hogging his nephew, what am I supposed to hold? He’s my nephew too, and I want a turn!"
"What nephew?" Sonia Quincy asked, happening to walk past them at that exact moment.
"..."
The cheerful expressions on the faces of the group, who had been laughing just moments before, instantly turned awkward.
Even Mrs. Preston and Brianna Bell froze.
"...What’s wrong?" Sonia Quincy asked, looking at them in utter confusion.
"Er... we were just talking about my nephew, actually," Julia Dawson said with an awkward laugh. "He was born last month, and he was the same weight as little Yoya!"
"Oh, really?" Sonia Quincy didn’t think much of it and had no reason to be suspicious. "Your nephew was six pounds, three ounces, too?"
Julia Dawson lied through her teeth. "Yep! A total coincidence!"
"How nice." Sonia Quincy smiled, then walked back to the edge of her bed and slowly sat down.
"Sonia." Brianna Bell picked up a glass of warm water from the nightstand and carefully held it to Sonia’s lips. "The doctor said you need to drink plenty of water. Why don’t you finish this glass first?"
The cool rim of the glass against her lips made Sonia flinch back instinctively.
But Brianna Bell was persistent, offering the glass again.
She leaned forward, holding the full glass steady, and waited patiently for Sonia to take a drink.
Sonia had never been cared for so attentively and was still getting used to it. Her first instinct was to say she could drink it herself, but when she looked up and met Brianna Bell’s concerned gaze, she didn’t have the heart to refuse.
"...Thank you, ma’am." She finally acquiesced, obediently letting Brianna Bell help her drink the entire glass of water.
Brianna Bell set the empty glass back down, then took a tissue and gently dabbed the corners of Sonia’s mouth.
Mrs. Preston stood to one side, smiling, unable to find any way to help herself.
Half an hour later, the stubborn Felix Preston finally returned, leaning on a crutch.
The little one had been lulled to sleep by Mason Shaw. When Mason saw Felix return, he thoughtfully carried the baby over so Felix could get a good look at his son.
But Felix only gave the baby a fleeting glance before waving Mason away.
Mason noticed that Felix had been staring intently at Sonia on the bed ever since he’d entered the room. Guessing he had something urgent to discuss with her, Mason quickly ushered everyone else out.
CLICK—
The door clicked softly shut, leaving Felix and Sonia staring at each other in silence from across the room.
Sonia knew what was coming, and the thought of talking to him made her lose her nerve.
"Don’t just stand there. Come and sit down."
Felix obediently came over, leaning on his crutch.
His left leg had been badly injured. The doctor had treated it, set it with a splint, and wrapped it in a thick layer of bandages. He looked rather pitiful at first glance.
Sonia’s eyes were glued to his leg. Once he was seated securely, she took a deep breath and steeled herself. "Go on, ask what you want to ask. I promise I’ll tell you the truth."
But Felix just shook his head; he had no intention of interrogating her.
"Hmm?" She didn’t understand. "What does that mean? Aren’t you going to ask me something?"
Felix Preston: "No."
He set his crutch aside and reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out a piece of paper, folded into a neat square, and slowly unfolded it in front of her.
The tear line was jagged, as if it had been gnawed by a dog, and the back was covered in scrawled writing.
Sonia stared at the paper in confusion. "What is this?"
Felix pursed his lips, his expression tense. "A... a written apology."
